State Opinion: Period 3
Comments:
There are many different ways a person can view animal rights. Personally, I think that animals should have rights, but only to a certain degree. The sad thing about animals is that we really can't tell what they are thinking or what there opinion is. Many think, that because of this, animals should just deal with whatever rights nature has given them. I don't agree with this. The problem I think that is existing in this situation is that we don't realize how so much of those rights that nature gave animals are taken away by other animals....humans. For entertainmnet or for advancement in medical fields we have taken many animals out of their natural environment, forcing them to adapt to new and some very different life styles. So in return for this, I think that some rights for animals should be supplied by us, the humans. All I am saying is that we should make existing laws obtaining to animal rights stronger so that animals have a chance to execute the rights nature gave them.

Wow, you were right. I do kinda agree with you. But only to a certain point. Stop, Ownage time.

Statement: I do believe that animals should be protected more. Yes, we are the most... or one of the most intelligent (*cough cough*) Species on earth but that doesn't mean we control the world. I don't think that animals should be shot for pleasure, skinned for fashion or tested on for medicines.

One: Okay. Speaking about medicine, I heard something a few months ago... Maybe even last month but thats besides the point. They were litterly INJECTING Into lab-rats to test and basically kill these rats. To me? That's definately murder. If you don't think so... I'll see you later and I'll convince you otherwise :).

Two: Now for the fashion makeup thing. I will actually include this video for you guys on my post a link... Watch it. It's kinda disturbing and such but I had to watch it about 6 times to grab all the information. Skinning peoples pets that were captured from the pound isn't right. To wear makeup that was tested on baboons, or mice or whatever is just as bad. Such things could poison the animal and then again, murder. Is the human race -THAT- corrupted? I think we might be.

Three: This is where I shoot Elias down. FIrst off, Yeah yeah NATURE GIVES EVERY CREATURE ITS RIGHTS!!!... Um... no. =^_^= I think that you're definately wrong. I don't think nature told us we have the freedom of speech and the prusuit of happiness. and well... Eat meat as much as you like. But remember... and I'll include this disturbing link as well just because I'm like that.. You probably wont ever eat as much meat again. It's really sad actually. Chickens are crammed into huge metal houses and basically are baked in the sun and fed pesticides to grow faster. Normally it takes a chicked 48 days to grow. With the junk the people are feeding them, it only takes 28 days. With this mass growth, the chickens cant walk because their legs don't develope, making htem crippled. Then they cant get food then they die. See? Never ending chain of abuse, and not cool-ness. Animals deserve as much respect as your next door neighbor, or your teacher does. Now if it's eating your leg off, then fine, but if its a cute little deer drazing in a field... C'mon, leave it be.*fixes her cat ears*

Five: Now what Megan said in class about the animals performing jobs. Then sure. That works but nah, I dont think payment is that great of an idea. Dogs can be trained to be rescue dogs, pets, drug searchers and even guides for the blind and/or deaf. I think these jobs and animals are necessary but I don't think that we should give them a few 100 dollar bills.

Six: I know I am ranting but meh, I have to cover everything and you know you LOVE to read what I write cause I'm M-Azing. (yes the chocolate)

Entertainment: Meh, Sure why not? Most of the time the animals (Horses, fish, dolphins, seals, lions and tigers and bears oh my) Are treated really well and yes, I've researched on that too. They get fed well and treated like rockstars. (Imagine a bear in a tourbus... haha)

Teh End For now at least. Chew on it. It's delicious

Edit: I did it wrong >_<

One: Okay. Speaking about medicine, I heard something a few months ago... Maybe even last month but thats besides the point. They were litterly INJECTING AIDS Into lab-rats to test and basically kill these rats. To me? That's definately murder. If you don't think so... I'll see you later and I'll convince you otherwise :).

OK...animals should have rights but only to a certain point. Like i like to eat chicken and pig and cow and stuff like that. So for food and even medical experimentation. I think that its ok to use an animal. But for things like abuse and fashion i think its just wrong. But then again its not in my choice whether to use littl ecute fluffy animals to clothe people so if you insist on haveing a mink coat then thats what you choose. So i think that im trying to say is that if you dont like somethings about how they the world in general is using them well im sorry but your not going to stop them from doing it.

Well....its really hard to start. I just wanna say i can totally see were both sides are coming from in this debate. I agree with Miss Lechase:) Animals should deffinatly have right, to a certain extent of course. I mean lets be reasonable, are we gonna really let cats vote, or choose their own president? I hope your answering no to that question. I believe every animal has their right to live. On the topic of hunting however, I believe it's neccesary no matter how cruel it is to some people. My dad hunts every season, but he doesn't shoot the babbies(that is just waisting new life) but as for the older ones, you have to. Other wise they will just die during the winter from starvation. I also belive that it is unneccesary for us to wear fur for fashion purposes when there are many alternatives. Sorry, I have a lot to say so this might end up as long as kat's:). On the topic of medicine, animals should be used to help us only for necessary purpouses. Only if we need them if we find cures, not for beauty purposes. One last thing that kinda annoyed me in class(I'm sorry if it's you that brought up these points). This was said by many people during our class discussion today:"It's ok to kill the animal if you are going to use all of it's part, but not if your just using it for fur." Doesn't that sound a little repeatative? No matter what the purpouse your still killing the animal. Who cares if it's for everything or just for one, it's still dying so you can get what you want, weather it be fashion or meat, or both. Please comment back on my last statement on the part were you can discuss. I really want to see if other people agree with that last part. Thank you. Kat, I still think yours is longer. You have to teach me to do that cat symbol thing. Bye!

This is a website about squirrls attacking people and the killing of them called of due to a stop in attacks. Animal rights people think its inhumane.

Sorry. It's supposed to say "the killing of them stopped" in my previous comment :)

While often in debate I will give extreme examples to make a point, here I am presenting my actual opinion. Please keep in mind that I have gone through extensive contemplation and research on all of my opinions regarding this matter, and they are not to be taken as knee-jerk nor impulsive. This is an important issue, and it can be extended into a realm of advanced thought, as has been demonstrated by philosophers such as Nietzsche. This goes beyond such outcries as "Animals are people, too!" or "I like to eat meat, ergo, I should.” It brings into focus the question of superiority, what determines it, and the rights of those who have it.

The essential thing to remember is that humans are part of nature. We are animals. It may seem as though the stance of placing ourselves in a position where we are excempt from the rest of the animal world and therefore have a duty to protect it is more humble than my own. This would be a naive impression, seeing as those who share my opinion of animal treatment are the ones who most readily admit that we are not above them. It is my opinion that being able to admit that one is no more than a part of nature is what leads to true respect for nature. I am a lover of animals, of nature, and of the environment. With that love of these things comes a profound respect for where we belong among them.

Look all around us. We are no exception from all the rest of life. We are primitive in physical terms. I will speak of our relationship to animals in purely physiological terms, but it is not to be thought that this does not include our mental, and therefore technological capabilities. How are we primitive? The proof is abundant. One of my favorites is that there are still physical fights over women (see chimps). We still need food to survive, we still have biological reactions to certain situations, and we still have sex. On a more specific note, we still release adrenaline as though we need to outrun something to save our lives, we still have bodies which would be much more healthy if our diet was 70% meat since we have not evolved to adapt to an agricultural lifestyle (see Paleolithic Diet), men still find large breasts and wide hips attractive in women because they aid in childbearing and raising, and women still find muscular men attractive because they would be able to defend them and their children from any threat; and all this not the result of conscious decisions – no, we now have the technology so that such human traits are no longer necessary – yet these traits exist because we are indeed animals, and because nature has decided that these traits would aid us in survival as a species.

We are not to think that we are above being above nature. Nature involves superiority in many ways. Survival of the fittest. Food chains. The list goes on. We are at the top of the chain thanks to our physiological capabilities. So, what position does that leave us in? It leaves us in the position to choose whatever we want to do to the rest of nature, because it is, at this point, our inherent right. I will not do anything to take away any right that nature has given anyone. Animals have the rights that they can get themselves, and that they have achieved through millions of years of nature, not from some arbitrary decision. We have no place to regulate the rights of animals. Animals do that for themselves. Our right as animals is to dominate those below us, as all other animals do. We also have advanced thought, and therefore we have the right to choose our personal preferences.

My personal opinion is that we should be able to use animals as necessary. We should be able to do what we want for our survival or pleasure, but not to the extent of cruelty. I always favor life over death, and I would never think of harming an animal for pleasure. There is but one exception as to my opinion on regulation of human interaction with animals, and that is mass killing for pleasure and abuse of domesticated animals. We should be very careful how we handle nature, because we need it. After all, we are part of it.

In conclusion, we are part of nature, and should act like it. Our physiological capabilities gives us the right to choose our own attitude towards nature. We must be cautious about how we handle nature, because ignorance may very well lead to our own downfall someday. We must be wary of extinction of other animals, because it may lead to our own. We must fulfill our place in nature, and use our better judgement to decide what will help us do it best. Learn from the animals. After all, you are one.

On a responsive note, I fail to see your point, Sarah. Saying that the liberties we have developed over time are independent of the graciousness of nature would be ignorance. Nature and evolution has given us the physiological ability of advanced thought, which results in such things as the conception of pursuit of happiness and freedom of speech.

I have a great deal of respect for anyone who takes time out of their day to fight for others - animals included.

But we're living in a world with a million problems: AIDS and starvation in Africa, racism in Asia, and terrorism in the middle-east to name a few.

So why spend a million dollars rebuilding a habitat to save a dozen bald eagles when you could feed an African village for life?

"One: Okay. Speaking about medicine, I heard something a few months ago... Maybe even last month but thats besides the point. They were litterly INJECTING AIDS Into lab-rats to test and basically kill these rats. To me? That's definately murder. If you don't think so... I'll see you later and I'll convince you otherwise :)."

Oh yeah, I would be SO much happier that at least when a family friend died of AIDS, in the process of researching a cure, several lab mice were saved by "compassionate" PETA members. God knows it's more important for them to eat seeds for a couple months more than for, you know, all that guy's family and friends not have to be struck with unbearable grief for years to come, in addition to the millions of others whose lives may be taken before we find a cure. Thank the lord for the prophetic freshman whose moral superiority allowed me to realize the error in my ways. Hallelujah.

Respond time !! =^_^=

"Who cares if it's for everything or just for one, it's still dying so you can get what you want, weather it be fashion or meat, or both." -Anna

Umm what? I'm basically saying that if you're going to die within the next three hours of starvation, fine, kill the animal and eat what you can but dont just kill an animal for its tail.. It's pathetic. With the hunting too, Anna I believe that that is also necessary because yes, deer are like rabbits..... (ahem) Nuff said.

Shooting at Elias again:

First off I respect Elias's opinions and agree and disagree completlely with what he's saying. Prepare for war everyone *smiles sweetly*

"This would be a naive impression, seeing as those who share my opinion of animal treatment are the ones who most readily admit that we are not above them. "

- Good job Elias. You've admitted that you are just as worthy as a bunny :)
Actually, he's right though. We don't have the ability to control the world though sometimes we would like to think so. It is not our duty to save the world but nor is it ours to destroy and murder. Though we are not any more above a tiger doesnt mean we have to kill it to show them. I don't think they care =^_^=

"I am a lover of animals, of nature, and of the environment. With that love of these things comes a profound respect for where we belong among them."

- Good job again. But somehow I don't believe you. If nature gives such animals rights as you said in class, is it the right for rats to be injected with aids? I think not.
With your whole rant about how we dominate the species below us? Yeah well.. duh.. *shrugs* I don't know how else to say that but yeah. Im not going to throw myself into a mouth of a tiger but we don't need to skin the tiger and use it to warm our feeties. >_<

"Saying that the liberties we have developed over time are independent of the graciousness of nature would be ignorance. Nature and evolution has given us the physiological ability of advanced thought, which results in such things as the conception of pursuit of happiness and freedom of speech."

It was an example and like always unline SOME people (cough cough ^_^) I like to put humor into my posts to make them more interesting and a bit more fun to read. Yeah I know animals don't talk about the meaning of life but that doesnt mean we have the right to wipe them completely out just so we can wear them around our necks. Wheres that logic hmmn?

-Disclaimer: Kat is not being offencive here and if you think she is, she isn't. Kat and Elias are actually friends but we like debates and war. All rights reserved. *copyright c thing* Sarah Logan, 2006

Safe sex Elias... Safe sex. *smiles innocently :)*

If people were just a bit more careful about who they do and when they do them... we wouldnt even have this problem.

Yeah, that was a topic changer.. Sorry ^_^.

There is other links for baboons getting their brain ripped open but they keep them alive even though they suffer. Elias... Some reasearch is not that necessary. Once again, the aids thing was an example.

*huffs in frusteration*

I believe that killing animals for sport is ok as long as you follow the laws that say like you may kill only 10 deer a day.By sport i mean you actual ihave to get up at 2:00 a.m and go in sit down for 4hrs waiting for something to go by.
I also think that testing some products on animals is ok.If they have to inject it with simething i hope they learn something from the reseach because that animals life would be wasted if they didnt learn anything.
*scratches chin*
Also using animals for some entertain like the circus is ok aslong they dont have to add seditives or anyrthing.

I am sort of divided on this topic. I believe that animals have rights, but only to an extent. If a species needs to eat other animals to survive, so be it. In order for humans to survive, we do not need animals for entertainment, or for fashion. We do not need fancy mink, fur coats to show off. We do not need to laugh at an elephant who is trained to run around in circles. As for companionship, we do not need pets, but I am sure all of you think we do, but in fact, we do not. As for testing for medicine, I don't think we need to test our medicine on animals. For example, imagine, let's say, a bear, taking you out of your house, away from your family. The bear injects you with tons of unknown chemicals, then sticks you in a box, only to observe you and watch you. The chemical has horrible reactions, and makes you suffer, making you eventually die. Now, think about this. Isn't this exactly what we are doing with lab rats, and all sorts of other animals. Sure, maybe they are helping to cure human diseases, but why should we use other animals for our advantage? Why not use humans? This just sounds like we are all a bunch of self-centered people who do not want to risk their lives, but instead will risk something else's, or someone else's life. As for food, I personally believe that if it is needed for survival, then it is ok to eat an animal. I mean, the world wouldn't have half as many species on it, if it weren't for the wonderful food chain. What would a lion eat if there were no animals for them to eat? In order for a lion to survive, it needs to eat meat. This means killing animals, which is exactly what us humans are doing, for food. There is also an overpopulation of cows, chickens, pigs, etc. on farms all over the world, so eating animals is also a good way to keep population down. As for what Megan said in class, with the jobs, no I don't think that they need jobs. If they want to, which they don't because their brains are not complex, each species could set up its own society. However, I doubt that animals want to vote for their president, or officials, or class president. I doubt that animals want to go to school, and learn complex math formulas. Tieing this back into the jobs topic, if they really wanted to, which I doubt they even think about, other animals could set up their own jobs system, so I don't believe in giving jobs to animals, even if they could help us. As for cruetly, no. We do not need to make an animal suffer, for any reason, at all. Period. Leanne had an interesting point to make in class, too. I don't remember it exactly, but from what I do remember, she said something about, if a dog bit you, you might put that dog down. Yet, if your grandmother bit you, you're not gonna put your grandmother to sleep. This shows how much of a superiority the human race is, over the rest of the other animal species. Don't foget, we are all animals too, maybe with a more complex brain system, however, but we are all animals.

I think that there are limits on what animals are used for. I cannot say that eating them are wrong because well, I eat them. We need animals for nourishment. Look at lions in the savannah and how they prey on other animals for food. It's the circle of life and you can't stop it.

On the issue of fashion, animals shouldn't be used. Animal fur may look and feel nice, but is it really worth unnecessicarily killing animals for looks?! I understand that groups like native americans used animal fur, but they NEEDED it not WANTED it for status or looks.

Using them for research is very helpful for us, but it would be nice if someone found other ways of testing. This could stop animals from being cooped up to possibly end up dying from research, but I rather have an animal be involved instead of me.

I think that its okay to have an animal as a pet. I for one have a pet.(He's a cute 5 1/2 month beagle named Flash) It's okay to have a pet as long as they are not being abused, caged up all day, and can keep necessary instincts. I'm not saying that it can be ANY animal because some cannot be domesticated and could harm you.

Animals do have rights. Their rights are more limited than ours because they don't have the intelligence to interpret or even need some rights. I believe that they have the right to not be abused and sometimes let them be.

I draw the line when an animal is being mistreated, abused, or used for someone who wants the "hottest" look.

Amanda Moody..
In my opinion, I don't think I'd go to either extreme expressed by a few people in this class..I won't mention any names, because I'm pretty sure they'd bite my head off. =] But anyway..there were a few things I read that I had my own opinion about..

Jaclyn..
"All I am saying is that we should make existing laws obtaining to animal rights stronger so that animals have a chance to execute the rights nature gave them."
-Yeah, I agree. I think that animals should be able to carry out the rights given to them, but I don't think that it is our place to allow them to do this. We ourselfs are animals too, this point was expressed by many people already, and is probably common knowledge to almost everyone reading this. Therefore..I don't think that we should be obligated to make these choices as to whether or not these rights are executed by the animals. I mean..yes, I understand that we are obviously more intelligent than a zebra, for example, but I feel that if a lion wanted to kill it's prey for food, skins, whatever, I think that it would do this without having a law created saying that it's alright for them to do so.

And Sarah..
"They were litterly INJECTING Into lab-rats to test and basically kill these rats. To me? That's definately murder"
-Although I do agree that injecting lab-rats with AIDS is wrong..I think that I'd rather them do that than inject a living human with that. Yes..by definition, this would be considered murder because you are killing that lab-rat, but to me I think I'd rather see that lab-rat die than a member of my family, or anyone elses for that matter. In reality..it is basically impossible to find out how a lab-rat is feeling. Asking it "Do you feel sorry that your 'cousin rat' died?" or by saying "I'm sorry but you're going to die of AIDS now." doesn't solve anything because they have no feelings that we are aware of. I think thats a major reason in why they use lab-rats rather than humans. However, when you say that this is murder, wouldn't it still be murder if the lab rat wasn't used? Wouldn't that just lead to the use of something else..which would in turn strike up another debate about the same thing, only a different organism being tested on? Hmm..let's think about that for a minute.

So..personally, I think animals do need more rights, but most that they are lacking are due to humans. I think that as intellectual-beings, we are made out to be superior to all other animals. However, if you were to put a human in the middle of the woods with a lion, I think that the lion would be able to survive ALOT longer than any human could. Just because we are intellectually and technologically more advanced than other animals, does not give us the right to overpower them and become superior to them because of these few reasons.

ok. i can tell there are obviously some really strong opinions about this issue. As for me, there are some things I agree with, and there are some that I don't. To kill animals for sport, and even for fashion is ridiculous. Do you really NEED to kill that innocent animal?
and sport, that's just wrong, i mean, according to mr.north, "By sport i mean you actual ihave to get up at 2:00 a.m and go in sit down for 4hrs waiting for something to go by." well, i think, personally your wasting your time sitting in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, waiting for a moose to run by and to shoot it, and, your killing an animal life at the same time.
As for medicine, a lot of people say that it's wrong to subject animals to this, and there's no difference between killing an animal vs. killing a human. well, morally, i guess there isn't, but practically, there is, considering the laws associated with murdering a human, even for scientific purposes. not to mention a lot of scientists might find it difficult to see a human suffering and die before there eyes, compared to a rat.then again, for a lot of people here, injecting and torturing a rat would be just as hard..
Entertainment? well, it's not like it's inhumane torture for an elephant to walk around a ring with a person on it, and a dolphin to do a few flips for us while getting treats every 5 minutes..
animal jobs? um, i don't really know what to say here, except, except for the jobs like guiding the blind, i'm not sure if animals can do anything else, and i don't really think they need paychecks..
yea, well, basically what I'm saying is, like almost everyone here, i'm divided on this. there's just a lot of aspects to keep in mind, so being entirely on one side of things is near impossible..

OK..i believe that animals are entitled to their rights...up to an extent. As megan said in class with the animal jobs and them being able to recieve some sort of income, i disagree with that. Humans were the living things that actually came up with the conceptof jobs as a mean of survival in the first place. There is no need for us to allow animals to take over certain jobs as well. They have their own way to survive : instinct.
However, animals do have rights of their own. I beleive that abusing animals is TOTALLY wrong..in my eyes, it is the same thisng as abusing a human.

--> 2 b continued <--

Jessica Woeckener
p3

I think that animals shouldnt get the same amount of rights as humans. THey dont have teh brain capacity and intelligence to think like us. They wouldnt be able to vote or work at the same jobs as us, and they cant support a family, so tehy shouldnt get the same rights as us, humans. Becaause we have no way of communicating with animals we shouldnt give them teh same rights. However, I do think they should prevent abuse.

OK..So I completely agree with what Laya said: "To kill animals for sport, and even for fashion is ridiculous. Do you really NEED to kill that innocent animal? "

I mean..come on now, why is it necessary to kill an animal for their fur, or anything else that has to do with fashion for that matter? Honestly, we are animals too!! How'd you like someone to come up to you and cut off your hair or something so that they could wear it as a jacket or hat or something. I don't think you'd like it very much..and so how do you think those animals feel? Umm, I'm thinking that they don't feel too great about it either!

First off, let me say that animal abuse is wrong and people who abuse animals should be locked up in a jail. But animals should get no rights because if they are pets, they get no advantages, thier owners do. Animals do not vote or have a repersentative in congress so they should be get that many rights. Laws to protect them are cool with me, but when laws to saving peoples lives with medicine that are used on animals. that is perfectly ok because if a few animals die to save thousands of people, sure experament. Make on animals if wrong, but if they are not harming the animals, then why should they do this. The makeup thing is the same as making your dog put on clothes to walk around. They might hate it, but that is life. We are the powerhouses of the earth so we get to do what we want to until something throws us out of that spot. Darwin says survival of the fittest and I agree because we are the smartest and right now the fittest creature on this planet, so lets make the best out of it.

i believe animals have rights to a certain extent. Since we do not have the priveldge to know what they are thinking, we cannot satify each animal. i disagree with animals having the rights that nature gave them. they are living and have no choice to be eaten. i know we need some animals as foods but if people just kill animals as a wall orniment or something to show pride us wrong. Hunting should not be a sport but only something that is used only when the food is needed. As for the places where animals are held where they are especially bred for eating should be humane. they should not be abused, malnurished, or treated unfairly. it is enough that they are gonna end up dead.
animal fur should not be used in fashion. animals should not be killed for their fur or skin to be worn. it is wrong & just unexceptable. Fauxfur is fine, it is made of artificial material that looks like animal fur. the only exceptable reason(i wouldn't prefer it) is if the animal is already dead, if it .20died of natural causes.
animals in entertainment is okay till a certain degree. if an animal seems to enjoy what they are doing and get rewarded & breaks it should be fine. but if they are in anyway abused, treated unfairly, or forced to do something out of fear than it should be wrong.
animals should have rights. something that gives them a chance to live their life even if they can't tell you how they want to live it. if you were an animal, you'd want to live. i know i would not want to be served as someones dinner.

Alright so this is what I think about animal rights. Humans are by far superior to animals. But animals should definitely be given the priveledge to have rights as miss lechase and anna have said. Just because their thoughts cannot be expressed to us by a way of talking doesn't mean that they should not get rights like us. Animals should be given the right to live and not be abused with some exceptions. As Trevor said, hunters should be allowed to hunt for animals. It keeps the animal populations to at a controlled level. Now companionship of animals is ok. It gives the pet a family that will care for it as a family member. I also believe that using animals for a source of food is ok also. I just think that the animal should be able to live a normal life before being made into food. Fashion from animals is a little overboard in my mind as Laya put it. Why do we need to kill animals when there are other materials that could be used? Well ill leave it at that. The use of animals for entertainment and research is a little different than the use in fashion. Im ok with it just as long as the animals are taken good care of. We, as humans, have benefitted from research on animals in creating cures for diseases. But overall, all i have to say is that animals should have at least some rights we have and that abusing them is just wrong.

I think that animals don't really have literal rights.I mean have you ever seen a cat pleading the first amendment. What animals do have to protect them is our duty that God gave us to be gardians of them. We aren't supposed to light them on fire if we feel like it and I feel that we have an obligation to prosecute those who do.I don't think we should pay a dog for sniffing out bombs and stuff especially if that is what it enjoys doing. I also don't think that shooting animals-like deer- for food is bad. My uncle hunts and it is partly because if there weren't enough people hunting them the deer would eat all the food in the area and they all would die instead of just a few. By the way he eats the meat.

Ok, I still don't think animals have "rights." I think that humans should respect that they're there. I also don't like hunting for fun, and the fur market.
If you think about it, humans were made to be superior to animals, and animals were made in a way that they couldn't think enough to care.

I agree with miss lechase, that animals should have certain rights, but they should be limited. Animals can be kept as companions and friends, because they don't really hurt the animals. But they can't be kept in your house, you have to give them freedom as long as you still have control over them. We shouldn't kill animals for fashion because that's just not right. You're killing an animal just so you can wear it for a while, and then you either grow out of it or it's not in style anymore. The life of that animal is then wasted. I'm ok with the entertainment and research part, as long as the animals aren't abused and they're treated properly. Like aluminum said, we've benefitted from some of the research done on animals. So my last point is that there should be a couple more animal rights than there are now. Simply because they are more intelligent than we give them credit for. Also if you look at it from one point, humans owe them a lot, because in the past, we weren't as advanced as we are now and animals could possibly be as intelligent as they are now. If they wanted to, they could've killed every single human on the planet somehow. So we should give them more rights instead of just killing them or abusing them

I think that animals are deprived of many rights that they should have. I think that using animals for companionship is perfectly fine as long as the animal is not being abused. I think that abusing animals under any circumstance is immoral and wrong. I think that using animals for entertainment is fine, too. I see nothing wrong with this as long as the animals are having fun and are happy, are being treated well, and are not being abused. I think that there is nothing wrong with this as long as there is no harm to the animal and they are living a happy life. I think that using animals for food and fashion depends on the specific situation. I think that what the native americans did was fine. If you kill an animal because you need it and use every, or close to every part of the animal, it is fine because it didn't die in vein. I'm not really sure what I think about using animals for research. I don't really know how they are treated, and don't know enough on the topic to form a strong opinion.

U people type too much. I do agree with most of u about the animal rights. I agree with Aluminum about humans being far "superior" to animals . Animals dont need alot of rights thou because they cant talk or do half the things humans are capable to do. People who abuse or mistreat animals should be put in jail as Tom mentioned. Killing animals for meat is okay with me as long as they are treated with care before they get killed. But killing them for fur for fashion isnt. And also we have to stop killing them for pleasure and hangin them up on walls as trophies. Experimenting with animals is useful for many humans. As Tom said experimenting by killing one animal could save thousands of humans from many diseases. My point is that animals could be better off with more rights and they should be treated better.

I agree with alanna except I think its ok to use animal fur as long as the animal is dead like to make leather when their done using the meat of a dead cow they should send that fur to coat factories where they can use that dead animals fur to make leather and other material.

I am quite divided on this topic. While animals’ rights are somewhat important to me, I really could care less and worry about something that directly affects me. I suppose we should worry about where our food is raised, but I guess as long as it is not that bad I do not really care. At least, that is what I thought before I read the article about Fur on the Catwalk. The way the treat and kill the animals? That is just awful. If animals are treated extremely badly, then it would be a problem. Okay I guess I think animals should be treated better than that. On what Meg said in class, I disagree—in my opinion, animals should have far less rights than humans. After all, having an animal in a human position such as the government does not seem right. So they should not be given the same rights either. What I think I mean is that animals should be treated humanely, but we still need them as food, so they still need to die. Thank you.

I personally believe in the use of logic and asking what we need and what is important. I don't believe that anything should suffer for a pointless or worthless cause. I also don't like the idea of causing suffering when not needed. We should definitely put human needs first, but also respect the lives of other species. Using animals for medical is perfectly fine, as in nature, always put your species first. If some animals have to suffer then at least its better than thousands to millions of people suffering and dying. In these cases, testing of animals is the only safe-to-humans method available. I am, however, against the testing of cosmetics on animals. It isn't something that could save someones life with, it just makes you look pretty. It isn't necessary to test on animals when it doesn't save a life or prevent extreme human suffering. I have a similar view on fashion. Animals shouldn't have to die just to make you look pretty. I could understand when furs were necessary to keep warm, but when other alternatives are available, ie: insulated jackets, faux (fake) fur, then it becomes necessary to kill animals for fur. Food is another story. Food is necessary for living, and meat is an important (and tasty) part of our diet. Without it, we wouldn't have the same amount of brain development as we do now. I do however think that animals raised for food should be treated humanely, were eating them, the least we could do is let them have a nice life while they can. If it is necessary to crowd farms with livestock to feed the population, and there is no other place to put the livestock, then we should cram them in, but this is a near unlikely situation. As for entertainment, I'm fine with that as long as the animals are in good conditions. One example of using animals for entertainment that you may not have thought of is owning a pet. This is perfectly fine, though PETA doesn't agree. In many of these cases, animals actually enjoy what they do, just as long as they are not harmed. As for animal jobs, believe it or not, this is a resource. We are using the items available to more efficiently perform a task. The animals don't see their "job" as a job, but more a game. Because of this, I believe that animal working is a good idea. If they can more efficiently perform a task, or remove a person from harms way then let it be so.

If you believe in something you shouldn't stop believeing in it because someone told you it was wrong. No you would fight harder for that belief. Yes i am a aware of the issue of animal rights butcan you stop the WORLD from using animal skins. You can't just walk up to the doors of like Milan and go oh sorry we think you need to stop using fur to make cloths and ect because I said so... I mean you can and try but there are more fashion zombies then you think...lol... For me its bad... yes...cute looking... yes.. but thats my view on the situation. We may be the USA but we can't control everything so you need to unight the world activists and then maybe you can make a difference. Have fun... the inside joke may the force be with you.

I realize that we are at the top of the food chain, but i don't think that gives us the right to use them for our entertainment or just kill them for sport. just like the native americans believe and i have to agree with is this: only kill if you'll use it all, in other words if you're not going to use all the animal for some thing or at least try to then don't waste its life by killing it. i meanin todays world they use the fur and the meat but not the bones, i relize that using the bones would be difficult with all of the composite materials that we make and use. but still alot of the time people just take the good meat and then just leave the carcas where it is, i think this is wrong. imean at least make an effort to use it in its entirety. and i disagree with using animals for entertainment because evenif we try to make them happy it's not the same as if you let them roam freely in the wild where they would live naturally. and the truth of the matter is that we can try to turn away from how they are treated but if you ever get to see the animals from a circus and see how they live you would realize how horrible and cramped it usually is. Idon't think that zoos are wrong just circuses because usually give the animals enough space to move freely, but im sure there are some zoos that do mistreat there animals you'd just have to look hard enough.

I think that animals should have rights! It is only fair because they can't fend for themselves and laws against inhumane acts like the murder and torture of millions of animals! Millions of animals all around the world are killed each minute and it is not fair because there is nothing that they can do to prevent it, but as consumers we can start by not supporting produce factories that torture and mutilate animals. We can stop supporting them by not buying products from them and buying your dairy products from small local dairy farms that raise their animals properly.

i think animals have many rights, but to a certain extent. If we need the animal for food, i believe we should kill it for food. We shouldn't give them like the right to vote, or like citizen ship. If their a pet, i think it depends on the happines of the animal. If they're happy it's fine, if not than something should be done.
