Do Animals Have Rights?
The earth is filled with an amazing diversity of animal life. As humans we frequently feel that we are the “masters” of the earth and that all other forms of life are our servants. However, if we analyze the variety of ways we interact and relate to animals it quickly becomes apparent that we have a much more complex interrelationship.

- We call some animals food and others pets.
- We use their stamina and strength to help us work.
- We prize their beauty as inspiration for art and fashion.
- We keep them as companions, and leave money to them in our wills.
Below are a group of links to some recent headlines from around the United States and the world. They are part of an ongoing international dialog about the rights of various forms of animal life.
- What responsibility do we have for the lives of our pets?
- Should we be concerned with the quality of life of those animals we raise to feed the human population?
- Do we have an obligation to ensure the continuation of all species on the planet?
- Is using animals for companionship OK? for food? for fashion? for entertainment? for research?
Where do we draw the line? Where do you draw the line?
The Assignment
- Choose one or more of the questions above as your topic for discussion. Then in a minimum of five sentences explain where you stand on the issue of animal rights.
- Post a link to a site that supports your opinion.
- Write a minimum of three sentences that give a summary of the site you have posted.

Safety First !
Safe and Ethical??? Most weeks you will be asked to post a website that is either "informative" or "supports" your point of view.
That raises two questions.
First, how do you “post a link” while making a blog entry?
Secondly, how do you know it is a trustworthy source of information?
This week’s blog entry.
Answer the following questions:
1. How do you find the website that you post?
2. How do you know that the website you choose is giving you "honest and ethical" information, that you can trust this site as a source of information?
3. Find a site that has guidelines for evaluating websites as being authentic and ethical.
4. Link your posting to that site using the format HERE.
5. State one way your linked site suggests you evaluate a website used for reference.

Friend or Foe ?
Cell phones seem to have changed the way we communicate with others, and the way we live our lives.They function as electronic leashes and nine-one-one safety devices. We use then to “keep in touch” with family and remain connected to "old friends."
We text as an alternative to talk, and talk as an alternative to being alone. Cell phone usage and the associated increased radiation risk has been credited with, and debated as, causing brain tumors or salivary gland cancer. It has also been blamed for low motility of sperm and behavioral problems in children whose mothers used the cell phone while pregnant.
No conclusive proof has yet to be established, nor has a clear connection been made between cell phone radiation and any negative effect on the human body.
