What responsibility do we have for the lives of our pets?
We have to feed the pet so it stays alive. You need to make sure the pet gets cleaned once in awhile. Pets need to get excercise so bring them out once in awhile if you can. Make sure you don't abuse them, keep them out of harms way. A pet also needs to stay healthy, such as a healthy diet would be nice.

When you bring your brand new pet home, you need to realize theres a hard and fun part. Its a lot to live up to but when you do it you'll be happy. A pet has to have certain needs to live and you need to make sure you fullfill those needs.
 

We, as a whole, are responsible for the lives and well-being of our pets. If you decide to spend the money to buy a pet, then you need to realize that they need to be treated like people too. They require ample amounts of exercise, a healthy diet, love and compassion and a place to live. However pets, for the most part, are domesticated animals. Wild animals belong in the wild and should not be confined to the premises of a zoo or house. I belive that this is unhealthy for them and the overall well-being of the species. Animals should be protected by laws. However I don't support tests and research conducted on animals for cosmetic purposes. Statistics show that 75% of the Americans are against cosmetic testing on animals and many companies have adopted more human ways of cosmetic testing due to the popular public demand. It causes severe allergic reactions to the tested animals. There are many availible alternatives to cosmetic animal testing.
 

I think that it is important to treat animals humanely. on that note, they should have food, water, shelter, and love. i do not necessarily believe that they should be treated exactly equal to humans, but they DO have rights. pets=love, if you bought the pet, then treat it with love. make sure they have excercise and a great home. So I wrote an entire lovely comment about animals and how one day they will take over the world and WE will be housepets, but it got deleted. :( I miss Bio. A lot. So yeah. I wanted to tell you that. Treat animals well, because when they rule over us, we would like to be treated nice. Not made into coats and ridden around a track all day long. :)

I think using animals for fashion is terrible! I would never wear a fur coat made from any animals. I think fashion is fine but leave the animals alone. Many animals are killed everyday to make clothing. Although fur coats are very warm, they should not be made from real animals, instead companies should consider using synthetic fur.

Should we be responsible for the continuation of all species on the planet? (No pressure..) Personally, I think that we should only be responsible for the animals in which we interact with, or domesticated. If we had even the smallest part of the cause of their endangerment/extinction then we should reexamine our methods of getting what we needs and wants, perhaps even seperate needs from wants. On the other hand, if we had no part in an animal's dwindling population number and it would cause us harm to help it, then I think it's reasonable to leave it as it is. If we can help them, which would be preferable, and it causes us no harm then by all means, do so! However, it can also be argued that we've effected everything around us since the moment we were created/born.

It seems to tell more about domesticated animals, but is still pretty good information since, as mentioned above, it may be arguable that humans effect all around them.
 

I feel that having an animal as your companion has nothing wrong about it. It's good to know that you will always have someone to come home too. You find a nice deep bond with your pet and they are always somebody to talk to. I think animals are perfectly fine for food. We are all made to eat meat. Meat has protein which our bodies need. I think that if you are going to kill an innocent animal for clothing just because you want to be in style is really ridiculous, but I also feel that if the animal is dead already, go for it. I think that its cruel to use animals for research unless you know for a fact it won't harm the animal. They can't sign a waiver and they have a say in anything, they are animals.
For our own pets, we are responsible for feeding them, making sure they are clean, giving them love, walking them, and just making they turn out to be good as they get older like we do with babies. I don't even have words to decribe how much i hate it when people are cruel to their pets. You bought the animal and you wanted it, take care of them as if it was one of your children.
This site talks about how animal cruelty is just absolutely ridiculous. It feels that animal cruelty should deffinetly be a felony. It also talks about how people let their dogs do cage fighting. That makes me so upset. Why would you want to see your animal getting attacked to death? It makes me feel that those people don;t care for animals, don't love them and take them for granted. Many of animals are killed everyday for a jacket, sweater or shoes that might not even fit you in a year or so. When you purchase an animal you have to realize it is like a contract promising to always care for and protect your pet. We have many responsibilities when taking care of a pet. A pet needs a certain amount of exercise and a balance diet to stay healthy. As a pet owner you need to spend time with your pet to make sure your pet has plenty of compassion. You pet deserves to be treated with respect like any other human being would like to be treated.

I feel we do have an obligation to ensure the continuation of all species on the planet. We have a great influence on all types of animals and their environments.Like cutting down forests which is a habitat for many animals. Since animals can't really fight for their rights and protection we must do it for them.

I believe that using animals for companionship is entirely fine, as long as they are treated well. Pets help to eliminate loneliness, can be a distraction from our every day lives, and they also allow us to learn more about responsibility. I believe it is alright to use animals for food as well, but I think that the way animals are raised and killed can become more humane. I think it also plays into survival of the fittest. We excercize our ability to survive and get all of the vital nutrients we need, like protiens from meat, by using animals for food (plus, who doesn't like a yummy hamburger). I think it is alright to use the skins of animals for fashion only when you use every part of the animal you possibly can. For example, I am opposed to the killing of elephants for the sole purpose of using the ivory tusks, as described in the second sample article. I would like clothing companies to use the skins of animals when they use the animal for other things as well. Faux fur is another alternative I am not opposed to. Using animals for research is more of a foggy area in my mind. I think that the use of humans to test cosmetics and things of that nature is alright if they volunteer. Humans have an ability to represent themselves. I am opposed to animal testing because the results aren't always accurate and because helpless animals cannot speak for themselves. I do not know of another alternative for testing, so I need to continue to listen to the oppinions of others in order for me to form a better oppinion.

Animals have many different purposes in the modern world. I believe that using animals for companionship is fine. People sometimes need someone, or in this case something, when they are depressed or are just lonely. As a vegetarian, I believe that animals should not be used for feeding the human population. In the future the animal population might be significantly less than it is today. Using animals for fashion is pointless. Killing animals for just their fur or skin and throwing away the remaining parts of it doesn't make sense. I have no objection to whether an animal is involved in some kind of entertainment as long as it is not being harmed. Lastly, using animals for research is not as accurate as using a human.

I definitally think that using animals for companionship is okay. I think that if there is someone who needs to be loved, an animal is a perfect solution. Although many people love and respect animals as pets, I dont think everyone is capable of taking on a pet. I think an animal that is a companion neeeds just as much love and caring that it provides for you and if you bring an animal into a home that is unstable or into an enviroment that you know you wont be able to care for the animal, then you should not have a pet.

I also think that using animals for food is okay. I highly respect vegetarians though, because i feel that they have great honor for animals. If my family did not eat meat on a regular basis i think that i too would be a vegetarian. Over all i think that eating animal meat is fine and i accept that it id done world wide and for some people it may be culture or some type of from of religion to eat certain types of meat.

For fashion? That is the big question that no one can really agree on. I personally think that animals should not be kill for the sole purpose of fur. I do believe that if animals are being killed for food the fur from those animals may be use for fashion.

I dont really have an opinon on using animals for entertainment. I just think that as long as they are being treated well it is fine.

As for research i am strongly against it and hope that an alternitive will be found and use.

I think that using animals for research is okay, but only on condition. Animals should not be used for testing out cosmetic products, such as makeup. This is cruel to the animals, and can leave them with permanent damage. This is unfair to the animals, as they have to live with everlasting injuries from product testing on things we don't even need to survive by. On the other hand, using animals for testing for medical purposes, in my opinion, can be acceptable. This sounds harsh, but, when you really think about it, how else would we be able to find new and better cures for dieseases without testing them out first? Does the lives of thousands of people saved equal the life of an animal used to test out a medicine? Maybe it IS wrong, I agree, but when you have to make a choice, I would say that picking a human life over an animal's would be mine.

Yes, I think we have an obligation to ensure the continuation of all species on the planet. I think this because if all the animals become extinct because of the things we do to there enviroment, we will lose a balanced enviroment. We harm there enviroment by cutting down trees, causing erosion, which will flood animals homes and they may end up dying. If some animals die there will be an inbalance in the enviroment because some animals eat others for food and with one of them dead we will have and over population of the other animal. So I think we have to help animals keep from becoming extinct.

Animals today with fur are being killed and used for coats and clothing. For example cheetahs, zebras, chincillas, etc. I tink this is wrong because animals have rights too and killing an animal is like killing a human(to me at least). Some animals are also used for jewlery. For example some elephants are killed for their trunks because the ivory from it is good for jewlery. Killing an animal for food is a different issue for me. We need food to survive and we kill animals to eat them just like they eat other animals. Animals don't kill other animals to wear them as a fashion statement. Animals are also used to test cosmetics such as sunscreen, lipstick, perfume, lotion, eye shadow, blush, etc.
PETA agrees with me about the ethical treatment of animals. They are having a SAVE A SEAL contest where whoever can come up with the best slogan wins a "Hug me, Don't Club me" t-shirt.
At PETA, people for the ethical treatment of animals, they come up with campiagns to stop the slughtering of innocent animals. They don't wear fur or leather and have big statemnets when the topic comes up. Sometimes PETA followers throw red paint on people wearing. fur coats or animal skins. Some makeup stores are even taking it to the next level and only selling makeup that is not tested on animals for example Sephora.
 

Should we be concerned with the quality of life of those animals we raise to feed the human population?

I absolutely believe that we need to treat the animals we feed the population with well. We have lost a lot of the farms that raise things off the land and due to technology becoming more advance we have relied on them to do things like prepare animals we eat. This cause disease and unhealthy living conditions for the animals as well as making the food we eat sketchy if its healthy or not. They also give many drugs to the animals to speed up the rate in which they can be sent out to the public to eat making it also unhealthy as out demands for food increase. These things concern me because if we get an animal that has a disease this disease is passed onto one person and then to another and so on which can hurt the human population.

Basically my article says that organic food is no healthier than conventional food. However you have to consider the drugs and pesticides used to preserve the food and to help the animal make quality food. So, its saying that organic is the better choice and i agree.
 

Animals are in our daily lives from pets to food to entertainment. Our use of animals in some of these ways is okay but in others instances I believe it is abuse. I am a very nature oriented person and believe in letting animals live their own lives without human domination but not without some human contact.

I believe in having animals for companionship as long as they are treated with respect and are given enough space to be able to live as animals (and not just confined indoors or in a cage). I do not support zoos because they display animals in cramped conditions to make money which is extremely cruel and greedy.

I believe in using animals for food because it is the order of the food chain - survival of the fittest - which exists throughout nature. Our role as humans though is to be conservative and not waste parts of the animals or kill for food in excess. And, the animals that we are using for food should not in any way be mistreated, confined, or fed anything unusual like growth hormones. These animals should be treated with the utmost respect as if they were a pet and should have a healthy diet. Unfortunately though this is not always the case. This abuse of animals has to stop because animals treated poorly and raised in poor conditions is not only abusive but cannot be good for the meat that is being produced.

As for fashion and entertainment I feel animals should not be used unless, in the case of fashion, the fur or hide has come from an animal already killed for food purposes.

Lastly, I feel research to benefit humans should be done on humans subjects. Animals do not have a choice to be tested or not and humans do. Further,tests conducted on humans would be more informative than those done on animals. Once again, I feel that the animals should be left in their natural environments to live full lives like humans instead of having to be pinned down to an operating table and disected.

Animals have been taken advantage of by people and as the dominant species we should respect and care for the lower species.

It explains the facts behind fur, wool, and leather and how animals are killed and then carlessly disposed of when making these materials. Lastly, it explains how factory farmers are not only responsible for killing animals but are also polluting the environment and extensive urbanization is contributing to massive habitat loss for animals. These cruelties have to stop and regulation should be put into place to protect animals against human brutality.
 

There is nothing wrong in keeping animals as pets. In fact, they can be great companions to you. However, I think that exploiting animals to suit our needs or fashion senses is pathetic. There is a large difference between us and the animals. But we should remember that they have the same rights as us humans as they are also the inhabitants of this planet. How far can we go with animals until it is considered inhumane?

I believe that although animals are not capable of thinking or acting on the same levels as humans that they should still be treated with respect. Animals share this planet with us and we should be able to get along in peace and harmony. Animals do have feelings and they know that they are being mistreated.

I think that the idea of having a pet is good. If the owner treats the pet well it will bring them the joy and happiness that they need. An animal lives on the brighter side of things so to speak that they don’t get upset and are always there for you. Pets are good because they sustain the population and become part of the human world. I completely agree with having certain types of animals as pets. Some animals like cats, dogs and so on are good pets but some animals should be kept in the wild. Cats and dogs were domesticated over 2000 years in the ancient world so they have evolved into being household creatures. I believe in having pets but there is a line in what can be a pet. Friends of Animals believes that wild animals should not be pets. In the article it states that humans are not capable of providing the habitat that certain animals need to live. Animals can also be a treat to their owner if they are dangerous and even if they are not. People also develop an extreme attachment to exotic pets and suffer a bad loss when they die.

I believe that using animals as a food source is humane. Since the beginning of time when nomads traveled the earth they ate animal meat. Meat is an essential part of the diet and is perfectly okay to eat. Animals eat other animals and it keeps the cycle of the world together. I believe eating meat is humane but only certain types. Not all animals should be used as a food source.

First of all if you have a pets you definately should take care of it.If you do mistreat you can be it legal trouble for animal crulity. ANimals that are used, especially dogs, to go fetch to see how fast they can run or when they are entered into a competition is perferctly okay,unless they are being hurt while training. When they are being used to fight, its just morally wrong. I believe that animals need to be treated with human treatment.

Animals are used for pretty much everything these days. Food, clothes, even as pets. It is perfectly ok to have a pet, as long as it has a good life, and you treat it well. If you have a pet, you are 100% responsible for it. No one should have a pet unless they know they can take care of it. Most humans would rather eat meat than go on some crazy vegan diet. But if we are going to makeanimals to eat, shouldn't we make sure they have just as good of a life as our pets, and not raised in a disgusting way to be disease ridden? So we should be very concerned with how we raise the food we eat. It is really none of our concern to make sure all of the other species on the planet stay alive. It is nice, but half the animals that live on the earth are not even necessary, so it is entirely up to us whether we want to keep the earth full of tons of animals and plants. Using animals to create thelatest fashion statement, as well as to test cosmetics, is wrong. Technology is so advanced today that a fake fur coat could be compared to a real fur coat and would seem exactly the same. Half the cosmetics tested on animals are full of substances that people know are bad for humans. The other ingredients that people don't know about should be tested on the people, because animals are not going to use lipstick or deodorant. Animals don't have a choice to live their life as a test subject, but there will always be people who will want to try the "latest and greatest makeup and cosmetic products." Using animals for entertainment is a lot like using them as pets. Its ok as long as they aren't abused or treated poorly. I draw the line when animals are abused, neglected, and used for clothing or testing. We have all the resposibility for our pets. We get them for a reason, to be loved and taken care of. I feel disgusted when people treat animals badly, no matter if it is wild or not.
People should also be concerned about the well-being of animals we eat. They do us a favor, if they weren't here we would be in big trouble. So people who kill domestic animals(like cows) should do it as humanely as possible.
We should be concerned about the continuation of many species on the planet. Many species of animals and plants are disappearing at an alarming rate due to deforestation, pesticides, and over-hunting. It is mostly our fault that a lot of species are not here anymore, so we should try to do our best to keep the remaining animals and plants on this earth.
I definately believe that having a pet is awesome. Forming a bond with an animal is very important. Our pets stand unwavering by our sides(if you have a dog anyway), they give unconditional love, and won't give away any secrets you tell them.
For food, well, as long as we don't over-hunt a species, and wait for the proper times to hunt I have no problem with it. (If it is an endangered animal then I have a problem.)
I am totally against the use of animals fo fashion. Just because the scales or fur looks cool are keeps you warm doesn't mean that the animal with it on its back is not using it! We could just readily use a fur or scale substitute. Here is a website that agrees with me.
 

We are all responsible for the well being of our pets. If you made the obligation to purchase a pet then you should fill all of the requirements for the pet to surive. Every owner should before buying the pet should read up on what is needed for the pet and any diseases to look out for. Of course you should feed and give water to the pet and proper shelter and exercise. I believe that an owner should always try and train the animal to the best of their abilites, to minimize the chance of having to put the animal down. I will draw the line at overlove or neglect. I also think that as hard as it is to believe that some animals just love you because you feed them.

When you buy a meat product you would expect that the animal had not lived in pain or suffering in its short life. I think that it is probably hard to feed a whole nation but they can still improve the living conditions. I think that all of the animals are crammed together to increase the profit of the company manager.
 

As Human beings we are one of the few if not the only species on this earth able to manipulate the enviroment. This great capability in my beleif does not mean we are masters of all the earth. Some animals are subjected to tests for the most unneccary reasons. many animls like mink are killed for their fur. I find this to be one of the most despicable practices on this earth. i belive that there is no need to kill the mink for its fur when we are able to make a synthetic material that is just as warm and looks exaxctly the same. Animals are also subject to test for cosmetic companies. Where they are subject to pain and suffering so that people can look better. Cosmetics are not neccary to support life like the use of animals in medical research is. The Animal Welfare Act has made some progress toward the outlaw of animal cosmetic testing. however it could be made better.Thanks to organizations like P.E.T.A. animal cruelty is slowly being eliminated .
 

The question i am using for my topic is "Is using animals for companionship OK? for food? for fashion? for entertainment? for research?". My answer is that it is good to use animals for companionship, this will create a relationship between humans and animals which is interactive and friendly. However, I think it is unacceptable to use animals for fashion and clothing. Killing animals to get something that isn't even a necessity is not okay. There are other ways to have fashion rather than killing animals. I think it is okay to use animals for food to a CERTAIN EXTENT. Using growth hormone stimulus on animals for food is not okay. I think it is human nature to depend on inferior animals for food such as chickens, fish, and cattle. I think it is okay to use animals in entertainment as long as the animal is not being harmed. And i think it is acceptable to use animals for research because it is for a good cause and knowledge. In conclusion i do think it is important to not use animals for wants and fashion, and they should have a certain amount of rights.

I believe pets have the same rights as people do. Even though they do not have the ability to think and speak like we do, they still are living things. I think that the domestication of pet kinds of animals (dogs, cats, etc.) can be kept as pets, used for companionship, and actually a learning experience. I've learned a lot by having dogs and cats. It has taught me about responsibility and has showed me a whole new way to care for something. We depend on our pets for comfort, but they depend on us more than we depend on them. They rely on us to feed the, give them shelter, give them water, and everything they need in their lives.

The animals that are now being raised are held in terrible conditions. The animals that we eat get put in close quarters and are fed whatever the company feels will make the animal larger and "more appetizing". All animals that produce food make better food when they live in their own conditions, not trapped and forced to create something by force.

Animals are fine as a food source. It is part of the food chain and is only natural for people to eat animals, but not mass produce animals.

I think that due to humans being more advanced than animals, it is the responsibility of people to help keep animals from going extinct. With the extinction of certain animals comes the destruction of the earth. There are many things that depend on animals on the earth. If bees go extinct, there will be no more pollination, no more fruit or vegetables.

Using animals for food and then using their skins for materials, like cow hides for leather, is o.k. because the animal is being used and if the skin doesn't get used, it is wasted even though it can be used. However, if a fox is killed for it's fur, it doesn't get eaten. It is not fair to the fox to kill it just for it's skin and then waste everything else that the fox possesses.

Animals should not be used for medical experimentation. The people who conduct the experiments don't use animals that already are injured or sick. They create sickness in an animal. They remove body parts to create problems for animals. I completely hate animal testing for anything. People think of the human race as a superior race, but why should we have more rights than animals? They are living too.

People have very low consideration for all of the animals in the world. What most don't realize is that without animals, there would be no people.
 

Animals are a vital facet to the survival and existance of our ecosystem. they are required for the continution of the food chain and subsequential sustainance of the population of all species. although i am not a personally devoted animal lover so to speak, i still am a civil being. i find that all animals deserve humane treatment because, if humans were not on the top of the food chain, we'd appreciate recprocated treatment! furthermore, should we not be concerned with the way the animals are cared for that we in turn, either ingest or absorb the byprducts of? think about it, if the meat isn't cared for in a grade-a manner, can it really be grade-a materials? i honestly was ignorant and naiive to the harsh confinements and feeding patterns to which livestock is subjected to! and i am sincerely apalled. i feel like it's common sense that our source of food be treated in the most quintessentially ideal conditions possible... i guess not. as i looked at this blog topic on the PETA
website, i'm not so sure their alternative is much better than the situation we have right now. it basically suggests to switch from cow milk due to forced impregnations, to using breast milk. it would be healthier apparently, and Dr. Spock even found concurrence in the claims made. i read and thought that it was odd that people would utilize human breast milk , but the article got me thinking that isn't it even stanger that we utilize the milk of other species?! it's a lot to digest, no pun intended, but ultimately, we need some kind of alternative or reform to the way these poor cows and other animals are being treated. we just need to find a way to make people care enoug to rally their support.

Pets Alive
This shelter has a rule of no killing the animals. A lot of the animals are alowed to live out thier lives there. They said all animals have the right to be humanely treated.
 

Do you think having an animal as a pet is okay? I think people should have animals as pets because they are good for lonely people and can be entertaining. No, I do not think animals should be used for food unless there is enough of that species so they do not have a chance of becoming extinct. Next, I do not think animals should be used for fashion because I think the animals go through torture then because they do not want to be there and pose for humans. Yes, dogs can be able to be used for entertainment if you are alone and have nothing to do. Certain animals can run around with you and help you get exercise. I absolutely disagree with the idea of animals being used for research because research on animals usually involves hurting them. I do not like when animals get hurt at all.
I chose to use this "site" because it explains the hard times of animals and explains what animals are going through. But pets have to have certain things in there life to make them happy.

What responsibility do we have for the lives of our pets?
In my opinion, we are responsible for our pets, but only as far as we need to be. My sister has a pet cat, Mia. It is the responsibility of my younger sibilings to feed her. They probably don't remember all the time. She lives outside, so, in the cases that they don't she probably hunts other animals(squirrels, hopefully). Some animals can sustain themselves, without the help of humans. In these cases, you don't need to entirely pamper them.
