YAY! I',m the first again!I think selling, buying, trading, of organs should most deffenitly be leagal. Some people might not even be interested in selling there organs. If someone offered them money, there is no shame in that. It is and extra organ or what not that would not even being used for the purpose of saving someones life. This however is borderline ethicaly and moraly. I admit it is not the most fair thing to let only people with money get first shot at a organ. However, this is not a reason to not let the richer people pay for organs that will not be used to help others. Besides, if there are over 86 thousand people on the donar list, we need all the help we can get in means of more donors. If that means to pay for them, by all means do it. The idea of being a donar does frighten me because the idea of getting your body cut up isn't exactily thrilling to me. However I'm going to be a donar because it could help a lot of people. To the topic of Todd, if I was going to die I would do everything I could do to find a donar. I'm sure you would too.I hope some people would put themselves in the peoples shoes that need an organ. They would want to do everything they could to help themselves. I do think the idea of setting up co-payments is a good idea that way maybe poor people could afford the same things as the rich people do. Thank you and goodnight.

Yes i believe laws should be changed so that you can buy organs. I believe this because this country is a capitalist country so we should try to make a little money while trying to help people. Selling organs will make more people a motive to give their organs to people in need.Doing this is a little unmoral to some people but also isnt eating cow unethical to indias. What i am trying to say some people will think this is wrong even thought it could help some people. If i was in need i would do exactly what Todd did and try to find a donor.

Yes I think that the buying, selling, trading, and advertisement of organs for transplant should be legal. Why? Well because, as the article says...As of July 27, 2004, there are 86,184 people on the national waiting list for organ transplant. That is a big number and the number of people who get the transplant isn't even close to that number. So if we can buy and sell the death total would be minimized and that would be great. Personally I think that the sale of transplant organs is perfectly ethical. As long as the transplant it’s done in a safe environment then I think it’s a great chance to save someone’s life. I would definitely be an organ donor because I could save a lot of people’s lives. 

Wow, it feels so good to get this out of the way before late Friday night for once!

Now, I am NOT going to go into the economical possibilties. A) it's a question of ethics and B) I don't really understand it all that well xD

I'm not very opinionated when it comes to transplants. Actually, I have no real opinion. On one hand, transplants are fairly new in the way of science, and we've been going on with life without them. And on the other hand, there are lots of people who rightly deserve these organs/tissues that don't have access to them. So I'm not really sure if I think that it should be legal or continue being illegal.

Onto ethics and morals. People selling their body parts does not bother me. Like the song, "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to," it's their body and they can sell it if they want to. People will do what they want, whether they're supposed to or not. That's all I have to say on that front.

Finally, just like Banana, I think that being a donar is slightly frightening. However, I think I will choose to be one when it comes time to make that decision. If someone that I know and love (or at least tolerate) needs a transplant and I can supply it, then I will. :D See? I'm not that evil!

The selling of organs should definitely become legal. It would help a lot of people, both ways. People on the donor list would be able to have the transplants needed so that they could live and the donor would get a sum of money in return. Everybody wins. Many argue that those less fortunate financial will not benefit from this system because they will not be able to afford a transplant, however if more organs were available than prices would go down and the demand for organs would not be as high. I also strongly agree with Mr. North—as far as ethics and morals are concerned, some people are going to think that this is a good thing others will not, but in the end it will save lives.

I do not think that our laws should be changed so people can legally buy, sell, trade, and advertise organs for transplant. This may cause sick things to happen. Not like they don't happen today, but people will start being greedy and realize if i can sell my organs for money, why not sell someone elses for money and not touch mine. Sick people could steal organs from random people to make some cash. It is horrible that some people have no heart and would put a price on someone's life, when you should feel good about donating an organ and SAVING someone's life and the life of their families.
The sale of transplant organs is unethical and immoral. You would think that a person would feel honored and self-pride in doing something right for someone other than yourself. Selfish people would sell their organs for money. What if someone couldn't pay for it and because you were greedy they died, leaving behind a family who needed that member to hold everything together. It is just like the grief of killing someone. Would you have pride in yourself for know you ARE the reason someone died? It is just wrong and put yourself in their position, whether it be you needing the organ or a loved one or a person you couldn't be without. what would you do? Ugh, its just super wrong to do such a thing.
I think I would be an organ donor if a loved one needed it. I would pick them over myself and want to do whatever I could to help them.
The idea of being an organ donor is sort of frightening but there is a level where you know it will help someone else. its something that floats both ways and is just what you make of it and how you can process the idea of saving lives with those organs.
I would possibly do what Todd Krampitz did but not myself doing it if i was the one who needed the transplant. i mean you would probably do anything for your life and i dont know i might. and like if i was a family member, a friend, or someone who knew him, i would deffinately take part or do as much i could to help him find a match donor and help him survive the cancer.

I'm on the fence for this one. I think making the selling, buying, and trading of organs would definitely help save many lives hanging in the balance waiting for a transplant. Many would give their organs and their would be a small or not existent waiting list. On the negative side, the quality of the organs might go down, because people who might really need the might not lead the healthiest lives (ex. addicts, homeless etc.) And you have to think about the people who have health-plan and/or monetary issues. If there is an effective and well-organized system developed for this, I would be a 100% for this.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
On the issue of ethics and morals, I don't really have any issues with this. I think that there will always be people who don't think this is right, but there's always people for or against any issue today.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
I think when I'm older I might be an organ donor. I'll definitely have the thing on my license saying that if i die in an accident or something, that my organs would be donated. I don't think I'll be brave enough for something like a kidney transplant, but probably something less invasive like my skin.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
The idea of being an organ donor does frighten me a bit... there's always a risk when you go under the knife and its not like your the one who needs the transplant so you're putting anxiety on yourself to help some one out. If someone in my family needed a transplant and I was a perfect match, there is no doubt in my mind that I would do it.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Now, if I was in Todd Krampitz's shoes, I think I would do what he did. I would have such a need and want to keep my life that I would do ANYTHING to save it. I personally think that it was a smart idea making a billboard and a website to help save a life and continuing to save others.

OK.....this seems to be one of the more touchy topics of the year. Honestly i think that selling and buying organs should be illegal. Now i know that a lot of people will disagree with me but.....

There are so many people in need of organs due to some type of tragedy. But if people start seeing profit in this then i think that it will become just uncontrollable. More people will want just the money and wont care about losing an organ, that can also cause more problems. People are greedy, nothing will be changing that(at least not any time soon). This might cause new problems to arise, like stealing and killing others just so they can sell their organs for money. I agree with teresa that you should want to donate an organ and save a life. People should want to help out and not for a profit.

Now is this ethical??? is it moral??? well actually i dont know. I could go either way with this part.

Now i have honestly thought about the whole organ donor thing and:
-i would love to help out someone in need. and if i was a perfect match then by all means take it. BUT if i need the organ because my kidney is looking a little "shady" then i will think about it. i dont want to sound mean but i wouldnt risk my life for someone who i dont really know. now that sounds horrible but its the truth. BUT if i die and some of my organs are usable then go ahead and take them.

If i was in Todds case.......
i would let fate handle it. iam a little old fashion that way.... i believe that if it was ment to be then it will happen :)

Um so lets see with this topic. I think that the buying, selling, and trading of organs is a good idea. By making it legal to sell organs, a better interest in giving organs could take place because the donor would be getting something in return. So I am saying that someone might give more thought into giving their organs if there was a little money in the picture. However, there is a downside to this idea. As Anna pointed out, the people who have money already could buy their own organs leaving the less rich people in the dust. This idea also bypasses the whole system of the waiting list. If the rich are able to buy organs for themselves, then that puts the people with the most severe cases who do not have the money at a great disadvantage. Just picture a world where all the available organs for transplants were being bought out by the people at the bottom of the waiting list while the less rich people at the top can do nothing about it. I just don't think it's right.

In the case of morality and ethicality. I'm not sure if the concept of selling organs is all that ethical. If you think about it a little deeper, if you sell an organ, you are practically selling yourself. But I would have to say that this idea is a good one and should be kept in a debate.

I think that being an organ donor is a great thing. I would not mind being an organ donor. As long as I know that something I do will help to save lives and make the world a better place I would do it. I do not think that the thought of being an organ donor will scare me away. I will have to agree that the thought of going under the knife is a little intimidating but I think I will still do it.

I think that what Todd did is great. He showed commitment in trying to save his own life. He also opened the world to a new debate over organs. Nevertheless, I do not think that I would do what Todd did. Knowing that there are people out there with more sever cases then me, I think I would allow them to get the transplants over me. And if I happen to not get the transplant in time, then I know that my time is up and go out knowing that I tried my best in life. This be the end.

Well actually one more point to conclude this. Being the pessimist I am and the pessimistic views I have, I think that if selling organs is made legal, mass murder in the states would occur. Greed for money in the states is definitely profound. I think that people out there will go to any extent in order to get money even murder. If someone were to become a murderer, all the organs in the murder victim could then be sold for a great profit. This is how I will conclude my views.

Ok. I think organ sales is a good thing. As many of you pointed out, this could serve as a possible motive for people to give away organs. If you don't believe that recieving money for it is right, don't do it then. Become a donor. Don't force your belief on the issue onto other people.
However, there is a downside, and like Teresa said, people could get greedy, and that could result in some problems with this system, problems that could take other people's lives, but I don't think it'll go so far as nationwide chaos and mass murder...besides, there are already a lot of people who are getting affected from an illegal organ trade.
I myself would be an organ donor. If I got into an car accident, then sure go ahead take my organs they would be of better use to you than me. It may be a little frightening, but there are worse procedures people have to undergo.

I do not think that people should be able to buy, or sell organs. If people were allowed to rich people would have a better chance than poor people of getting organs. This would especially happen if like someone said in class, people didn’t donate anymore, they just sold. Then if you didn’t have money you would be stuck. The price would also continually go up. It would work like this: one person offers say $30 for a liver. Then someone else wants it more and offers $40 and gets the liver. Then next time someone wants a liver the standard price is $40. Someone wants it bad and offers $50 and wins. Next, time the price starts out at $50. You get the idea. I suppose that one pro for the sale of organs would be that more people would “give” their organs so more people would live, but eventually the price would get so high that only extremely rich people would ever get organs, so then more people would die in the long run than were ever saved in the first place.
I don’t have a moral issue with the sale of organs; I just don’t think we should do it.
I think I might at one time become an organ donor, just not right now.

Ithink that buying and selling organs should be legal, but hey there is a catch, only under certain situations should the buying and selling of organs be allowed. i think that if people could sell there organs with no catch they might not donate organs anymore and that would make it a problem for people who need an organ of some sort and they dont have enough money. therefore i propose that organs may be sold and only if there are absolutely no organs at all that can or will be donated and it can't be advertised alot either or else people will wait until the hospital says its okay to sell the organ to the person who needs it. it would be a complicated thing to do, most definitely, but i think that in the end it would prbably pay off. also im not 100% sure of the details and exactly how it would work.

I'm not going to look a this situation in a ethical way, but more in a practical way.

However, due to question #2 I have to mention it. SO... personally, I don't think it's ethical BUT I don't believe in forcing morals on people.

ANYWAY: Allowing the sale of organs will mean that there will be less free organs. In many cases, organs would only be available to the upper class, putting most of the middle and the entire lower class at an extreme disadvantage. Not to mention that it puts a priority on how can afford it instead of medical urgency. As Banana said, there could by laws to avoid this, but that would get very messy and impractical. Medical care is already EXTREMELY expensive, and allowing the sale of organs would raise it even higher. A kidney transplant can cost up to $80,000 PLUS a $30.000 in trust in case of complications. A liver transplant will go for $100,000 PLUS $40.000 in trust in case of complications. (http://www.organtransplantservices.com/costs.htm)
The only reason this is reasonably affordable is because of insurgence. If you want want to encourage people to donate, offer a tax deduction, tax refund, grant, or in the case of Pennsylvania, offer $300 to help with funeral costs. Helping with funeral cost would remain more "ethical" in the eye's of some than just cold cash. Anyway, here's the link: http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/bioethics/9905/organ.donate/template.html

I DO NOT think that the buying of organs should be made legal in the U.S. I agree with Paul that this would lead to less free organs, which would lead to less people being able to get organs for an affordable price. People might literally have to pay "blood money" for their life. I don't think that selling organs is moral because it takes advantage of peoples' medical problems and makes a profit out of it. I would happily be an organ donor, because I feel that if I don't need a kidney, I should be able to give it to someone who needs one.

I think the laws should be changed so we can buy, sell, trade, and advertise organs because it would save a lot of lives and organs would be more abundant to obtain as a doctor if people knew they would make a profit off of it. The sale of organs is ethical because people who need them can get them faster and it would be profitable and life saving for most people.

here is my website http://www.telegraphindia.com/1070123/asp/jamshedpur/story_7298313.asp

I think that our laws should be changed so that people can legally buy, sell, trade, and advertise organs for transplant. Not only would recipients get another chance
at life, but the donors would get money in return. If it doesn't harm anyone, then there's no fault in selling or buying organs. It's harmless to whoever needs an organ as long as it matches their blood type. The sale of transplant organs is ethical and moral because it's for a good cause. There's no shame in getting an organ, even for a price. People deserve the chance of living their lives to the fullest. If they have a chance to save their own lives, they should do it, even for a price. I would be an organ donor, as long as it's safe for both me and the person who needs it. It's for a good cause that helps people. I wouldn't be afraid of being a donor, since you'd be asleep and everything. If I was in Todd's situation, I would've done the same. There's at least 100 people in the world that are willing to give up organs.

People in thwe United States should be allowed to buy and sell organs. There is no question about it in my mind. As long as it doesn't put you in danger of dieing becasue you need the organ you are selling, it should be okay to do. You are helping someone who needs help to live, what is the government going to say about it, that helping people is wrong. And you are also helping out you and your family fiancially becasue if you just got layed off your job or have no job at all, then why can't you sell part of your body to somebody to get back on your feet so you have a better chance to get a job. And to all of the people who said that poorer people wouldn't be able to buy organs, the government could step in and if you fit a certain income range or lower they could help pay for it, the lower you income, the more you get help on the payment. The government helps pay for other medical conditions and they will prorablly help pay for this one if you need help. Its it for sure ethical and moral to sell your organs or buy an organ. Your not selling your self, only an spare part.

For todd, i think what he did was great becasu enot only did he help him self for a year or so and helps other people in the long run.

I think that the buying, selling, and trading of organs is an ok idea. By making it legal to sell organs, a better interest in giving organs could take place because the donor would get compensation for their good deed. More people would probabaly be willing to donate organs. However, there is a downside to this idea. The problem is that people who have money could buy extra organs in case of an emergency. This would just lead to the same outcome of not enough organs going around. This idea also bypasses the whole system of the waiting list. If the rich are able to buy organs for themselves, then that puts the people with the most severe cases who do not have the money at a great disadvantage. If that happened, the world wouldn't have available organs for transplants for people with more severe cases would be screwed. I just don't think it's right.

In the case of morality and ethicality. I'm not sure if the concept of selling organs is all that ethical. If you think about it a little deeper, if you sell an organ, you are selling a part of yourself. But I would have to say that this idea is a good one and should be kept in a debate because some people are ok with that while others aren't.

I believe that being an organ donor is a great thing. I wouldn,t mind being an organ donor. As long as I know that it will save lives and make the world a better place I would do it. The thought of being an organ donor does not frighten me. I will have to agree that the thought of going under the knife is a little scary but I think I would still do it.

I think that what Todd did was amazing. He showed commitment in trying to save his life. He also opened the world to a new debate over organs. Nevertheless, I do not think that I would do what Todd did. I would have probably just stay on the waiting list. If i didn't get one in time, i would have been happy that someone else was saved. Yea i'm done

i agree with most people on here that it should be legal to buy, sell, trade, and advertise organs. If it could save someones life then why is it illegal? I read in the reading that "86,184" people are waiting for organs and they can easly be helped if people could sell their organs. if i could i would be an organ donor because my friend almost died because she needed a kidney. It dosent scare me being an organ donor because if you can save someone else live and still be able to live why wouldnt you want to donate your organs. If it is made legal that you can sell organs it could also help people who dont have a lot of money be able to live because they could just sell an organ.

If people really want to buy and sell organs, that’s their decision. It should be legal, but at the people’s own risk. The sale of organs may be ethical for those in dire need, but morally, it is wrong. However, I agree with Alanna that less people would be able to afford organs, but those who can pay and are willing to should be able to. I have a New York State non-driver’s ID, which resembles a license. I am an organ donor according to the back of my ID card. However, it makes me queasy to think about it.

I think selling, buying, and trading of organs should be legal. There are 86,184 people on the national waiting list for organ transplant. Every day, 17 Americans die of organ failure. If people were to offer money for organs im sure more people would more likely do that instead of donating. But only extra or what organs that are not being used should be sold. That is the limit. People shouldn't just sell their organs for money, it should be done to help others.
In Todd's case, i would do anythin and everythin to find a donor so I may live.

I think buying and selling organs shoudl be legal. I think so because there isnt enough people donating their organs for every person that needs one. Maybe if you could get paid for them people would be more willing to sell them, this would save many people's lives. BUt i think there is a line between the reasons a person should be selling them. I think it is wrong just to sell your organs for money and put another person in debt to get them. I think inorder for it to be legal like most people said there should be a certain price on them that everyone sells them for. I think the sell of transplants is morally right because it is for your personal benifit. I think i would like to be an organ donor because i would like other people to live off organs i don't need. Cuz when i am dead im not oging to be needing them so why should i stop other people from getting them??

Okay, first of all, Should our laws be changed so that people can legally buy, sell, trade, and advertise organs for transplant?
Yes. If more organs were for sale, more people would survive, most likely. If more organs were on the market, then the price of them would go down. Then people who could not afford them, would be able to, and people who needed them and could afford to pay more for them, could. If more organs were on the market, then we would be saving many peoples' lives.

Is this ethical??
I believe so. However, many people would disagree with me. You may be kind of selling yourself in a sense, however, you are helping to save lives.

I would probably not be likely to be an organ donor. Even though I believe it is alright for others to, I would prefer not to risk my life, for a person who may not survive anyway. However, just because I feel this way, does not mean that others should. Saving others' lives is extremely important, just as organ donating is.

Oops, I totaly forgot about this! I think that buying and selling organs should be legal, at a set price. More people would probably be willing to go through the process of giving their organ if there was something in it for them. That would benefit more people if there were more people who were giving organs. Even if some people can't afford them at a set price, they wouldn't have been able to go to another country to buy one there anyway.

This link explains the controversies on this topic.

http://atheism.about.com/od/bioethics/a/sellingorgans.htm

Personally, I think that organ selling, buying, trading, and advertising are fine..to an extent. I feel that yes, the laws should be changed so that these actions can take place, but I still feel that they should remain regulated to some extent. I feel that any organ should be able to be traded, sold, bought, and advertised for. I do, however, think that the "price range" for the organs should vary based on the necessity of the organ, how many people need the organ, and other similar information. In my opinion, the sale of transplants is 100% moral and ethical. My reasoning is summed up in one sentence posted by Mr.J himself:
"All major religions...consider donation the greatest gift"
If all major religions feel this way, there should be no problem in the moral or ethical reasoning as to whether the sale of transplants should be allowed. I feel that the adherents to these religions would support the idea of selling a transplant even more because not only are you making a donation, but you are also saving/improving up to 70 lives in doing so! Personally, I might be a donor..but it would depend on the person receiving the organ. For example, I don't think I would donate an organ to someone who conflicted the disease/problem with the organ on themself (ex: alcoholism). However, if it were a little girl in need, or a family or friend, I think that I would donate the organ without a second thought. Yes, the idea of being a donor is frightening at first, but when you think about it more you realize all of the help you can give to people, and if you are in good health, it's not a total necessity to have the organ in which you are donation, with obvious exceptions (like the heart, but I don't think anyone would donate one of those). If I were in need to a transplant as much as Todd Krampitz was, I feel that I might do what he did. However, it would depend on the situation that I was in..and whether I had someone close to me, like a friend or family member, willing to donate. Because now that I think about it...I'm not sure that I would want a complete stranger giving me an organ not knowing what he has done in the past, and if there's some sort of history that affects that transplanted organ in his genetics, but that's just me...

PS..Mr.Johnson, sorry this was so late...but I talked to you about it in class, and I think we're ok? My computer is working again though, yay!

Reposting . . . .

1. Should our laws be changed so that people can legally buy, sell, trade, and advertise organs for transplant? Explain your answer.

Yes. Someone has a product they wish to provide (organ) in exchange for reciprocation (money). I fail
to see the difficulty.

2. Is the sale of transplant organs ethical? Moral? Explain your answer.

The buying and selling of organs does leave a bad taste in my mouth, but I'm willing to accept the fact that it would be wrong to impose my ideals on anyone else.

3. Would you be an organ donor?

Yes. If I don't need them, and someone else needs them to survive, the choice is clear.

4. Does the idea of being an organ donor frighten you in any way?

AH! Philanthropy! Somebody hold me.

I think that buying and selling organs should be illegal because the ability to sell your own organs would provoke money desperate people(perhaps drug abbusers) to start selling their organs for money to use for drugs or things of that nature. Also with today's society, everyone needs/wants more money because today everything is more expensive. With an excess amount of organs, they would become prone to all different types of diseases.

personally, i see no problem w. buying, mselling, trading, etc... organs for transplant, so of course i would saw that some laws should be changed. if the proccess is benefitting somebody to the point where it could be saving their life, why make it illegal? i also believe that the selling of organs is borderline ethically and morally, as banana said. i mean, if people are in dire need of a transplant, they shouldnt have to pay for it, if it isnt costing the donor any money to give it away. however, i also strongly agree w. mr. north on the fact that america is a capitalist nation, and must make gains in money thru this "buisness".

If i was in need of a liver in order to save my life, I would definately do what Todd did, to find a donor faster, and save my own life.

James I think you should be able to but on a smaller scale.it should be limited otherwise somepeople couldnt afford them .I think it is ethical because if you have extra organs and your poor you could make some money.i would be a donor . iwould do it for free because i would want to help people who couldnt afford organs .that is my view on organ (doning). if thats how you spell it.
