Postings, Opinions, & Links from Period Three
Comments:
If I were a parent, I would be glad to have this vaccine for my daughter. However, since it is such a new product, I would worry about side effects which have not been discovered yet. With a manditory vaccine, I would feel like the school system was overpowering my decisions as a parent. Also, if I came from a lower class family, I would think that my daughter was being discriminated against just becaue we couldn't afford $360 worth of vaccines. Here is a link that tells about the FDA's upcoming review of Gardasil.

As a parent I think that I would want my child to be as safe as possible. I would probably want them to receive the vaccine just to be safe. Some parents think that by allowing their child to get the vaccine they are supporting a decision for their child to be involved in sexual activity. As far as sex is concerned, its inevitable, people are going to have sex. Parents will just have to trust their children to make the right decision for them, no matter what the decision is. Again as a parent I would like my child to be protected no matter how much I trust them. A parent could talk to their child until they are blue in the face and preach to them about abstinence all they want, but when the time comes for their child to make a decision they will overall do what they want to do.

As much as I would want my child to receive the vaccine, some people may have different opinions. I do not agree with the government making the vaccine mandatory. I do not see why the government would need to control everything that the people do. I can make decisions for my family myself. What right does the government have to make these vaccines mandatory? No matter how safe a vaccine is there are always precautions that are involved. Gardasil can cause pain, swelling, itching, and redness at the injection site, fever, nausea, and dizziness. “Only a doctor or healthcare professional can decide if Gardasil is right for you or your daughter.” Everyone is different and reacts differently to drugs, a positive affect of the drug is not a guarantee. Also Gardasil is an expensive vaccine. Many people will not be able to afford it.

Here’s my link:

It talks about how people should not want the vaccine mandatory.

Hmm...lets see. If I were a parent, I would want my child to be as happy and safe as possible. I guess that I would have to support the use of Gardasil. Seeing as it will help to prevent the number one sexually transmitted disease from infecting my child, I think it is a good idea. Sure others may say that it could be promoting sexual activity and I would have to agree. But me being a parent in this case, I would have a long chat with my child and spouse about this. I think of the vaccine as a precaution to the dangers and risks of being secually active so I do feel that the use of the vaccine Gardasil is a good choice. But there is the downside to everything. The side-effects are a major part in this. I think I would wait a little bit before giving my child the vaccine just so the side-effects are worked out and it is known how they can be treated.

The other side of the topic about making it mandatory to get the vaccine is another story. I do not think that it should be mandatory to get the vaccine. Thinking about the poorer side of the population, it could be very difficult for them to obtain these vaccines. The price is a little bit on the pricey side. Making the vaccine mandatory would put the poorer people at a disadvantage. Another standpoint is that making this mandatory would be invading privacy. I would agree to this view in that the government would be forcing people to do something that maybe some people would not want to do for their own reasons. It just would not be right. Well that concludes that.

This link tells about how vaccines work on the body and what vaccines do:

I would definitely support having my child getting the vaccine. Preventing one of the many sexually transmitted diseases is a huge improvement than no protection at all. I mean, they will make their own decisions when it comes to having sex, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Here's where I disagree with the posts before me. I do think that having the vaccine should be mandatory. $360 is a small price to pay compared to other costs that could arise from NOT getting the vaccine. When it comes to Gardasil, it has the same side effects as all other vaccines. And as far as privacy goes, do you have to tell people that you have/had measles or the chicken pox? You don't have to say anything concerning you sex life to ANYONE. :)

So anyways, here's my link.
Will cancer vaccine get to all women?
It talks about what other people think (in both the US and other countries) and shows what could happen in both situations (not giving vaccine and giving vaccine).

If I was a mother, I would definitely get this vaccination for my daughter. I don't have any problems with this vaccine. Yes, there
are side affects, but they are nothing compared to what this vaccine is preventing.
Many are saying "well, if my child gets this vaccination, isn't this only encouraging them to have sex?" Well, this could be influential, but only to a certain extent. Most children and teens today know the possible consequences of having sex so if they're going to have sex they'll do it with or without this vaccine.

I really this vaccine is great, but don't agree on the idea of making it mandatory. The $360 price for the vaccine may not seem like a big deal to some, but for those who are less fortunate, this is asking for a lot. If the price was lower for the vaccine and it was more readily available, many would go and get this vaccine. The $360 is a small price to pay instead of getting cervical cancer and maybe paying for it by losing my life.

I really don't see the problem with this, because before you know it, this vaccine will be as routine and normal as a chicken pox vaccination.

Here's my link that gives you facts about Gardasil and it's effectiveness-

I think that if I were a parent i would definitely approve of the vaccination. Kids this day and age are more prone to pursue sexual activity and although I wouldn't condone that behavior, parents don't ALWAYS have their eyes on there children and this can happen whether they like it or not. If something were to happen i would feel much better about it knowing my daughter has little or no risk of getting cervical cancer.

I think mandatory vaccination is GOOD and BAD. Good because in this world things like rape, underage sex, and drugs do exist. Things like this exist everywhere and it could happen to ANYONE. So I'd rather everyone be safe and cancer free than not. It might be bad because people are going to think that the government yet again is trying to control and restrict our society (even though in my opinion they are trying to help and prevent). People might also think that by enforcing the vaccine they are somehow enforce and condoning underage sex. But I don't see it that way though some girl are going to see this as a free pass to go and have sex others won't because getting cervical cancer isn't the only thing that is a result of having sex. You could get pregnant, get a different STD, or something in that nature, all the government is trying to do is slowly prevent these things from happening. Everything needs a first step. The first was condoms and birth control now we are using our knowledge to prevent the fatal result of sex. but thats just me :)

I think that if I were a parent, I would definitely get this vaccine for my daughter, despite the side effects.
This could look like a parent telling a child it's ok to engage in sexual activites, but honestly, as a parent it's your job to set the facts straight with your child, that the vaccine is a precaution, but not a parent's blessing to go ahead and have sex. I think that a lot of parents are uncomfortable about the whole idea because they really don't want to talk to their kids about their sexual activity. I have to agree with miss lechase and say really, it's all up to the kid in the end.
As for making the vaccination mandatory, I don't really see it as a problem, but I'm not sure if it's necessary for school. Other vaccinations that are mandatory make sense for school children, because if one isn't vaccinated, it could affect the others. But in this case, I really think it should be up to the parent about if this is right for your child or not.

tells a little bit about the debate, and the development of Gardasil

If i was a parent i would definitly have my child recieve this shot. I think that it should be manditory. I think that it should be manditory because this is a break through to heling prevent cancer!!! People think that giving this shot to thier kids is like giving them permission to have sex. You know what this is not about having sex!!! this is about preventing your childs life from the painful thing called cancer. Yes, this is a result of a disease. And yes you could get this disease by having sex. But i think that its more about protecting your kids from a painful expience. By making this manditory, the parents that are not as "worried" and a little "out-of-it" thier child would still be protected. This is a procaution. Why do you get a flu shot? Because you dont want the flu. Why would you recieve this vaccine? So you have a smaller risk of getting cancer. This disease not only protects your child from and STD but from CANCER. I would let....MAKE my child recieve this.

http://www.gardasil.com/who-should-receive-gardasil.html

Well, i think that this vaccine is a big deal and is a great blessing. Again, i have another family connection to this subject. My aunt has Ovarian and uteran cancer that started from HPV. She was such a strong women, but seeing what the kemo and radiation is doing to her is so depressing. This is a disease you want to prevent before it can become so much worse.

I would gladly give it to my daughter...and son. Everyone is forgeting that the study showed that the progress was better if both sexes were vaccinized. This is a dissease in which it takes two to tango, if you know what i mean.

I think it also should be mandated. I myself as much as anyone do not want to see the government take over our lives. In this case however i think it is for the best. Some children do not tell their parents everything when it comes to sex. Its just an aquard subject, i can relate. So the parents might not be fully aware as to the child's sexual activity. I also believe the child should talk to their doctor and tell them whether or not they think they should get the shot. I think it should be confidencial just like the privledges with doctors are. I think the children in this case know more than the parents do.

My one different thought that no one else mentioned yet is to vaccinated both sexes. You shouldn't just give it to girls because they are the ones who can get the disease. My catchphrase for the week:
"It takes two to tango."

If I were a parent, I think that the use of gardasil on my daughter, or son, would be fine. I know that obviously men cannot get cervical cancer, but it would help to stop his wife, girlfriend, whatever, from contracting it from him. This is the first vaccination that is 100% effective in stopping a type of cancer, and therefore I would have no problem with vaccinating my child. However, I do not think that manditory vaccination in schools is right, in all circumstances. I think that if they were to make it manditory, the schools should have to pay for all of the girls to get vaccinated. I do not think it is fair to make the vaccination manditory if there are families that cannot afford it. I feel that rather than making it manditory, the schools should highly encourage it, and set up days where the girls can go and get vaccinated in the school so that there is an outlet for them to go in order to receive the vaccination, and if the parents are notified that there is going to be a "vaccination-day," I think that there will be more appeal to getting it done.

If you were a parent how would you feel about the use of Gardasil?
If you were a parent how would you feel about the mandatory vaccine?
Post a link to support your thoughts.

If I was a parent, I would love having the option to have my child(ren) Vaccinated but I do not think I'd be too happy with the shot being maditory. Kids these days are going down the drain in my eyes and if they're going to go off and have sex and expose themselves to all sorts of crazy diseases, I'd personally prefer my child to be safer.

"But the vaccine raises a difficult issue for parents. Would inoculating adolescents against an STD promote unsafe sex?"
This is my question as well.

Kids don't exactly listen to their parents as much as they used to so we have some problems there as well.

As much as I'd love the vaccination, I dont think it should be manditory. I think this because having a manditory vaccination is just more government crap trying to control the world and that honestly bugs me. Plus, what are you going to do if your child is allergic to everything under the sun except tree bark? "Gardasil can cause pain, swelling, itching, and redness at the injection site, fever, nausea, and dizziness. “Only a doctor or healthcare professional can decide if Gardasil is right for you or your daughter.” I swear I've seen worse side effects on a cough medicine, but still... No.

Now adressing the people complaining about the price. Well think of it this way. 360 bucks or your life? I think I rather throw out the cash, take out a loan if I reaaallly needed to but I rather be safe.

If I were a parent I would not care about the use of the drug. I wouldn’t want this drug to be mandatory though. So what if the vaccine is free it’s just going to come out in my taxes. Nothing is free especially when it is from the government. I would object to this quite a bit if it were mandatory. I know that it is not totally mandatory in Texas right now, but I’m still paying for it even if my kid doesn’t get it. Why should I pay so that someone else’s daughter can have sex without worrying about it? Also why should I send a message to my kid that even though I taught them not to have sex until marriage, I’m going to give them a drug to prevent a sexually transmitted disease. Talk about mixed messages! "We can prevent it by the best public health method, and that's not having sex before marriage," said Linda Klepacki of Focus on the Family, a Christian advocacy organization based in Colorado Springs.

I think that if i was a parent i would be very happy for my children to get a vaccine so that that wouldnt get HPV. BUt since most of the side affects arent discovered i would be very cautious about it. If it was manditory i wouldnt mind it that much unless i came from a lower class family than i would that it wasnt fair that i had to pay 360 dollars just so that my daughter could go to school.

If I was a parent, I would support the use of Gardasil at an extent. I would have my child get this vaccine because it makes my child safe. There are still some bad effects as to having your children get this vaccine. It could help promote children's decisions to have sex and think that it's safer. There are some side-effects that are unknown as of now, which would make me unsure if my child should take it or not. I don't think that it should be a mandatory vaccine so the children and their parents should decide what to do. It costs 360 dollars just to get the vaccination and not everyone is willing to or can pay for it. Some people might not want to have their children taking this vaccine for their own reasons, like thinking it's unsafe. That way, only the people who feel that their children need the vaccine should pay to get it. Here's my link that describes Gardasil as a vaccine:

IF you were a parent how would you feel about the use of Gardasil???

If I were a parent i would be glad that i could vaccinate my child to be able to protect them. Of curse parents would think that by protecting their child from a sexually transmitted disease that they would be letting their child have sex but that’s not the case because kids aren’t going to care if they have their parents permission or not.

If you were a parent how would you feel about the mandatory vaccine???

If I were a parent I wouldn't mind it if it were a mandatory vaccine because then I would no that the disease wont spread that much. Here is a link supporting my thoughts. my link

If i were a parent, I would would my child safe as possible. I would most likely want them to have this vaccine, jus to be safe to certain point. There are certain risks to taking this vaccine. Some parents believe that giving this vaccice would be supporting their kids to have sex. It doesn't really matter because they will do it anyways. As miss lechase said parents would would to jus trust their child. But still there should be protectiuon no matter how much you trust them or come to an agreement with the child, which might not work. Also there are some side-effects that are unknown to this point.

On the other hand i dont think this vaccine should be mandatory. Because the government doesnt have to control what poeple do. And also the this vaccine is hard for poor people to obtain since it costs $360.

Heres my link. It also is a bolg of other people o their opinions about this issue. And it includes some visual media!

If you were a parent how would you feel about the use of Gardasil?
Well... it would probably be best in the long run, but you never know about side effects and safety with new products. Besides, getting this vaccination is just about telling your child to have sex. However, besides from that and the side effects, it would most likely be better in the long run.

If you were a parent how would you feel about the mandatory vaccine?
Well, I believe that mandatory is pushing it a bit far. Some people just are not fortunate enough to be able to afford it, even though it is a small price to pay. However, since schools are making it mandatory, some people will not be able to afford it, and then some will not be able to go to school if they cannot afford it.

Ok...if I were a parent, I would be happy with the vaccine. I really would not want my child to be in danger of getting cancer. The vaccine being mandatory is also fine with me, because it could possible lead to an end for cervical cancer. I just think that if it becomes mandatory, the vaccine should be covered by insurance. Or, you could think: $360 for a new Coach bag, or $360 to keep from getting cancer.
I also don't think that by making the vaccine mandatory, kids would be more promoted to preform that "act." I think that if kids are stupid enough to be preforming this act at a young age, they don't really care either which way about the vaccine.

sorry im a little late. I think that if i were a parent i would say that this was a good vaccination to get for my daughter. i mean i really probably wouldn't know a lot of what they were doing when i wasn't watching them and so this vaccine might help if they were engaged in some sort of sexual activity. and also even if they aren't doing something sexual then its just another layer of protection and it couldn't hurt have it done.
heres my link: http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2006/NEW01385.html

sorry im still using the old way of posting a link. lol

The vaccine should be an option, not a requisite. It's wrong that the government should dictate to children and parents what they need to do to stay healthy. Their argument is, "Well, you may not know it, but it's good for you!" That's great. Hey government bully, maybe if you realized that people can think on their own and are able to make their own decisions, you could focus on things more important than sharing how much better you are than the average man, and how you therefore must protect those too stupid to do it for themselves, and you could actually get something done. Someone needs to weild the pin that will pop this bloated, pontificating, patronizing bureaucracy, and someone needs to do it soon.

See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligarchy

This is what the chai-sippers in government want.

sorry its late,
my internet was being rediculous.

If I was a parent, I would like my child to have the vaccine Gardasil. I would want my daughter to be as safe as possible & it would keep her healthier in the long run. If this vaccine was mandatory, i would be more relieved that i know my child is prevented from getting HPV. it would be the safest thing to do, even though it is sort of expensive, but how much would you be willing to pay to possibly save your child's life?

You Could be One Less

If i were a parent then i would want my daughter to get the vaccine becasue even though i would not want her to have sex until she was older, a kid is gonna do what they want no matter what you say to them. if she was dead set on having sex with some hot shot then i would try my best to prevent it but i would have her get the vaccine anyways, so if i couldnt prevent her from having sex then at least i would not have to worry about her getting cancer.

If I was a parent, I would be against this vaccine being mandatory for all girls. But I would definitely be happy with the fact that it's always an option. I think teenagers are smarter than they are given credit for. No one wants to put themselves in danger.
I think if someones daughter felt they were ready to have sex, then they have the option to get the vaccination. They should be educated on the cancers and other diseases they are putting themselves at risk for. I really think education is the key thing here.
But making this mandatory is like saying all girls are irresponsable and are going to run around having sex and think there are no consequences. I think it's wrong to assume that.
Sure a vaccine can help, but it can never completely fix anything.
There are pros and cons to everything, especially when it comes to medicine.
If it does actually become mandatory, there are major risks. Of course everyone will be concerned and going to the doctors right away to get this. But what if it backfires? Then you just have a large amount of people not able to function properly.
It shouldn't be forced upon us. And if anything, they should make it mandatory to different places at a time. Rather than everyone at the same time.

-I KNOW THIS IS VERY LATE. THE SNOW DAYS COMPLETELY THREW ME OFF AND IT JUST SLIPPED MY MIND.

The vaccine shouldn't be forced on to people. If they couldn't pay the money to pay for the vaccine, does that mine that they can't go to school in this country. School is meant to be free. every is intitaled to have a free education up until college. That is not allowing your rights granted to us by the government.

The government shouldn't be allowed to control the rights of people. You can't just assume that everyone is having sexual intercourse of somekind. And even if most are the amount of people who are carriers of this diease aren't the majority of the people in the world.

heres my link
its is about the debate on whether it should be manditory

righthere

With the use of Gardasil things would be safer. I would also be worried about my kid's morals as to wether or not he/she will make the right choice now they think they are protected. I would also feel sad because it is showing my kid is growing up. I fell the vaccine should be not manditory so my kid will be more careful. I just want my kid to still have morals. I would like to give a reference but can't because I would hate to see my kid on a porn site and I am not showing that.

well, if i were a parent, i would definately want my child to be vaccinated against HPV. even though i probably wouldnt want to think about my child going out and having sex, i would want her to be safe. after all, i wouldnt be able to control every aspect of her life, and rape is a possibility as well =C

i agree w. emily on the fact that i would be a little hesitant fro my daughter to get vaccinated due to how new the product is, and the risk of undiscovered side effects. but i do think they probably would not be as deadly as cancer.

about the mandatory vaccine however, i would feel a bit intimidated. the school system, after all definately does not have the right to parent my child for me, or make decisions on vaccinations for my child, that i might not want her to have...or that i wouldnt want to pay for.
however, i do think that it may be a good idea in order to lower the risk of cervical cancer and the spread of HPV in the school system. Also, if all the girls and boys in the school were vaccinated, it would greatly decrease the risk for outbreak.

James If i were a parent i would get my child vaccinated . although i wouldnt be supporting premarital sex i would do it just in case. i wouldnt want my kid to get cancer even if it is an accident. i would make sure my kid wouldnt have sex anyway but i would get my cchild it for extra protection.

james I dont think it should be mandatory unless the government paid for it because some people cant afford it.

James www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/hpv.html

If I were a parent, I would want my daughter to get the vaccination. I think that it would be a good thing that it be mandatory in the state of New York. There a lot of parents who ignore that their kids are out having sex or possibly don't care. Although its not something that you can catch by being in the same room as someone, there are still a lot of parents who don't know what is going on with their kids.

This web site explains how some insurance plans do not cover it and about the vaccination itself.

http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/STDFact-HPV-vaccine.htm#hpvvac3

From the parents point of veiw, I would rather have the option of whether or not to get the vaccine than for it to be manditory. Giving your child the vaccine doesn't neccessarily give them permission to have sex it's just protecting them like any other vaccine would.

If I were a parent I would want my child to take the vaccine because I cant follow the child around every where he or she went and if he or she gets pressured as a parent I would rather have some fight against the disease then none at all, and it is better to be safe then sorry.
