When does it cross the line?
Recently in class we watched the movie Lorenzo’s Oil, now you get to think.
Lorenzo was treated with a diet that ended up hurting him more than it helped him which resulted in his sickness getting worse.
1. At some point in all experimental treatments the medical industry crosses the line. When does a patient turn from being helped to becoming a lab rat?
2. Lorenzo was sick but his parents kept him fighting for his life in his hospital while other families took their children off of their medication and let them die, saying that they did the right thing by not letting their child suffer for the rest of their lives. Who is right and why are they right?
3. If your child was sick with Adrenoleukodystrophy, (ALD) and was suffering, what would you do? Would you keep your child in the hospital and continue the treatment and testing’s? Or would you let your child die “peacefully”?
Task One: Answer the three questions above.
You don’t need a link since it is an ethics question.
Task Two: Explain why you chose what you did, how you came to your decision or opinion and relate it to the movie Lorenzo’s Oil in some way.
