A group at Penn State noted a period of "extraordinary stress" affecting colonies before they died off. They link this to poor nutrition and drought. This is the only factor that all of the reported cases of CCD(colony collapse disorder) have in common so far.

Yes I think that VBS is an important issue because bees help plants to reproduce. Without them many species of plants may not survive. Instead of bees, we would probably need to create a man made mechanism of pollinating plants.

This site give you an overview on VBS (known as CCD, colony collapse disorder) and also goes into specifics on each of the theories including malnutrition. It talks about "extraordinary stress" being put on the bees because of poor nutrition. Some researchers have attributed the syndrome to the practice of feeding high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to supplement winter stores. However, if this was the only factor, then this should lead to the exclusive appearance of CCD in wintering colonies being fed this, but many of the reports occur in colonies where the beekeeper does not use HFCS.

I do think that this an important issue. Its not as important to me as some other environmental issues, but its still significant enough to worry about. We definitely need bees more than they need us. They keep many plants around.

Instead of bees, like miss lechase said, we could use some kind of man-made device to pollenate plants.

Honey Bee Colony Dies! why are all these colonies dying? some think that it is because of the melnutrition of the bee colony. The reason that is so bg of a deal because bess are agricultiraly important. The importance is worldwide!

Honestly i do not think that this is a bog deal. I think that we should be worring about cures for cancer and aid.....not bees. no offence but this is not where my concern is.

I dont think that we should worry about that yet because nobody even knows for sure wat is going on.
 

I think that the cause of VBS may possibly be a combination of all of the factors listed. In particular, I think that pesticides have a great deal to do with the decrease in bees over the years. This site tells a few things that might have an effect on VBS. It also explains some common ways that people misuse pesticides.

Instead of bees plants could be pollinated by wind, other animals, and water. Bees do most of the pollinating though. Another way that plants are pollinated is by hand. This is generally used by flower growers to insure that they know exactly what two plants were crossed.
 

i think that bees are being killed off some disease or unknown pathogen because their numbers have been slowly dying for a while.

The site thinks that they are dying fast because there genes dont give them many natural defenses against diseases.

I think that this is a big deal because if all the bees die then we will need to come up with other ways to pollentate our plants.

Well i think maybe we can come up with our own mix of animals to make something that could fly around and pollenate flowers for us.

This site tells about VBS. It gives the facts on it. It says that the main cause is being pointed at pesticides. i think it is an important enviornmental problem because bees polinate the majority of our flowers. Without them, it would take us forever to polinate plants. Instead of bees we could make new breeds of flowers that are self polinating. I know a little sci-fi but it could happen :-)Banana signing off!!

This site says that the millions of bees that are dying could be a cause of the pesticides and that they are testing some of the pesticides that were ban in Britain that we use here.


I think that it is an important issure because if bees don't pollinate our plants then the crops won't grow that feed our societies. Whether I like bees or not doesnt matter, cuz i like to eat =] so I think that it is an important issue that our food is not growing because the bees arent pollinating.

Another way we could pollinate is by other animals or by mechanical pollinating.

My site is basically an overview of VBS. It lists all of the possible theories, causes, and effects of VBS in relation to our lives.

I feel that VBS is a very important environmental concern. I think that most people underestimate how the loss of bees would impact our lives, and so they do not truly grasp how important it is.

Instead of bees, we could use some sort of man-made device to pollenate our plants. This could be done by using a needle to act like the "pollenating-part" of the bee, and it could perform the same way the bee does.

From what I've read, It seems like the ultimate killer of the bees is a combination of pathogens and fungus. But what is allowing them to contact these diseases is a poor immune system. This may be caused by new nicotine based pesticides.

of course the destruction of any species has a tremendous effect on the ecosystem. bees are a mayor pollinator thus numerous plant species would be harmed. Really the only substitute I could think of is fruit flies, or modified robot flies (yes they have those now), but these would be impractical and costly.

Cell phone don't even have enough radiation to cause cancer...
I think butterflies could be used to fertilize plants because they're natural, and people don't dislike them.

This site explains that there is no sure cause. But pesticides play a role. It explains instances where bees are directly effected. Such as commericial beekeeping, because they are transporting hives over all over different areas where different pesticides could be.
I think this is an issue we should be concerned about because they pollinate about one third of the crops in the US. But I don't think an extreme amount of effort should be put forth right now because there are worse things, in my opinion, we need to worry about.
The only other way I can think to pollinate plants is to use another insect similar to the bee.
 

hola! i see that it looks like the majority of the vote has gone towards malnutrition. i have to say though that i dont think thats what it is. i dont what it really is i can only speculate from a third person view. anyeays i think instead of bees we could have butterflies pollinate plants for reproduction. butterflies do that already. i mean there would probably be a big drop in the plant production but at least it would still be occurring, and not altogether stopped.

what i think is causing all of this is stress on the bees. this site talks about that saying that new pesticides are playing a big role in this most likely and also other environmental factors are seeming to take their toll as well. there was a quote on the site that said “If you give them one of these things at a time, they seem to deal with it,” she said. “But all of these things, it’s too hard." i think this is true and that the big cause in my opinion is definitely stress. global warming is one of those things adding to this stress in my opinion.

I think pesticides are the most obvious choice. NO way is it cell phones. It might be a pathagen but then it would be easier to figure out. A pesticide we wouldn't think of it cuz its humen created. malnutrition, nah i doubt it cuz it wouldn't be a cross the whole world then. if it was one area it would make more sense. bam

we could get people to do the work pollinating some of the plantations and we could get other animals and other ways. we should start researching this now so in case of a huge and sudden decline that leaves all bees dead we will be able to pollinate.

Alright so I believe that electromagenetic radiation is the cause for VBS. Electromagnetic radiation is related to cellphones and other electronics.

Here is my link. It is to Wikipedia which I think is a reliable source thanks to Elias's reasoning a while ago. But it states that the electromagnetic radiation output from electronic devices prevents bees from returning to their hives to reproduce. This is the major point in this theory.

I do think that VBS is a somewhat important issue but I would not say that it is an extremely important issue. There are other animals and insects that aid in pollination but may not have as a great an effect as bees do. I believe that we could possibly invent something to pollinate or find another species to do it.
 

i think chemicals are harmful to bees. pesticides are on main cause, according to this site.
i do not think VBS is an important issue because it is not widely studied in our area so we never hear about it. to pollinate our plants, though, i believe we need bees. chemicals continue to make this a growing issue.

tests have shown that bees act differently around power lines.they cant yet tell if cellphones can cause cancer but it does a ppear to kill brain cells. and even cause tumors in the brain where people talking on the cell phone had it.
i think this is an issue because people depend on bees to pollenate so many foods we take for grantite
i dont think we could find any other way of pollenating plants as efficiantly as bees.

Why the Rage?

Yeah, all the things listed in the topic could be reasons why the bees are kinda goners. The pesticides in the crops cant be helping either. Instead of bees, we could invent a machine and call it the beetron 3000 and it would fly around and pollinate all our plants and everything would be perfect.
 

The theory I choose for vanishing bees is cell phone radiation. It talks about how the radiation interfers with them and there daily systems. I think instead of bees we could help with the process of pollination or use nanobots.

VBS is an important environmental issues because bees re important to our diet and are an important part of nature. We cannot replace the bees, except perhaps with expensive artificial pollination.
