there were many problems in 1970 and most of them are still vast today. i think over population is a big problem. in 1970 there were a lot of people which meant a lot more pollution and a lot more factories. now there are more people and the number of factories, industries, and other store are growing along with pollution. though we have many things that cause pollution i think we have found some solutions to these problems.

i think that we are improving in helping the environment because factories and industries have stopped dumping wastes into rivers or at least a little bit. i think that we have become environmentally -friendly or at least we are trying. we have improved because we started using electric cars and solar power. but i also think that we haven't improved as much as we should have in these 30 years. i think it is important that we treat the environment good because we are the ones that live in it and a bad environment effects us in a bad way but a good environment effects us in a good way. so which one is better??? the good environment...DUH!!

to help improve the environment i think i would pick up garbage, recycle, use an electric car instead of a gas car, and many other things. i do believe that it is important to keep the environment CLEAN!!!
 

yeah so um earth day.

well, first off, i think that a huge issue right now, as in the 1970's, is pollution, but in specific "clean energy", because many of our energy sources cause pollution. Particuarly the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal.

Not only does this webiste support alternate energy, but it lists tips to conserve energy.

I think we are making slow/gradual progress to fixing this problem by beginning to use biodeisel, and hyrbrid cars, solar, and wind power. But I think that the faster we fix this problem, the better.

One thing anyone can do is turn off lights/running water when you are not in the room. There are other things such as the use of glass or ceramic cookware, or not placing trees south of windows [?]
 

earth day is really important. It shows people our world, what is wrong with it, and what we can do to try and fix it. improving the environment will save lives. Pollution is one of the biggest problems, green house gases are in there. Green house gases create holes in our atmosphere which eventually lead to global warming whch is ruining our world, melting the polar icecaps, and destroying much of the world.

to fix it, we can use "green" or more energy efficient tools, drive less, turn off the lights when leaving a room, stuff like that. All the little things add up because there are millions of people doing the exact same things all over the world.

The concern from 1970 that I chose was pollution, although I agree with poison when he says overpopulation is a cause of pollution.

I think we are putting forth an effort to make our world more environmentally friendly. Like many people said, we are now using electric cars instead of solar power. But I also think there are many simple things we can do to improve the well being of the earth. Turning off the faucet and lights, changing your type of lightbulb, keeping the refrigerator closed, and changing your tires are all simple ways.

Overpopulation is still a major issue today. In China, if the population walked by you, 8 in each row, the line would never end due to the rate of reproduction. That's a lot of people.
We are slowly failing to help the environment. We are trying to help the environment, but we are making it worse quicker.
I can plant tree outside, and maybe a little garden, change the lightbulbs to eco-friendly lightbulbs.

There were many concerns dealing with the environment that existed in 1970 and these problems are still present today. One of these problems is pollution. The pollution of the atmosphere, bodies of water, etc is a problem we have been dealing with for many years. Many animals are dying off because pollution affects their habitats.

Even though certain government laws have been passed to control pollution, not enough has been done to help put an end to this growing problem. According to the latest results from the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), made public on June 23, 2004, toxic releases into the U.S. environment rose by 5 percent in 2002 over the previous year. Many things can be done to help prevent pollution. One specific idea is that we can use environmentally friendly fuel such as Ethanol. It does not release as many toxins into that atmosphere as standard gasoline does.
 

A major concern in 1970's earth day was pollution. This is still a major concern and I feel that people have not made an improvement, though, partly thanx to earth day, they have become more aware of the problems. This makes the situatio even worse because the general public knows about these problems and they still dont try to do anything. Individually, I would try to make other people more aware of the problems and how they could affect everybody in the world. I would also recycle and try to walk places instead of driving, if i had enough time.

Pollution, overpopulation causing food shortages, and harmful synthetic chemicals were major issues brought up in the first Earth day. Im thinking that air pollution is the most publicized global issue that is still present today. Since there is so much media, people are more aware of what is going on and therefore more people will try to stop it.


I think we're making progress in environmental issues. More people are using solar energy and hybrid vehicles. I I think it has gone too far though. It is being embellished on a lot and being used as more of a political device. I do believe it is important to keep track of what is going on with our environmnet and try to protect it. However, I belive the whole "doomsday" attitude going on should be focused on more imminent dangers, like a little thing called the Jihad for example.

yes, we've fixed some things...but there is much more to do. Global warming is a central issue relating to this. It is becoming more obvious lately that this is a huge problem and the world needs to wake up and smell the coffe and DO SOMETHING!
I mean like we can even pick up garbage...there is pleanty of things we "little people" with "no influence" can do. But we dooo have influence. vote bring it to someones attention. or just do something yourself-make our enviorment prettier and cleaner. As a society we can do things like making more energy efficient and solar powered cars. Factories are still alive in the world...lets do white smoke instead of black smoke..or no smoke-stop the unnecesary polution. yes I realize that needs money to happen. So government needs to invest more in that. This is our health we are talking about...no small matter. Our eco-footprint has grown. There are plenty of people that have totally crazy and unecesary "toys" that pollute like crazy. Our society doesn't make the right thing easy to do. Even though that is the hot thing right now-put things in perspective...please.
Lets try to conserve energy right now...like e.r. said...turn off lights shut the refrigerator door-it doesnt take much effort.
I think it would be really cool if we adopted a highway and cleaned up the earth a bit-its the least we can do.

I chose to discuss overpopulation, one of the main concerns from Earth Day of 1970. as population increases and number of people living on this planet do as well, the need for more supplies increases, causing the need and construction of more factories, finally, increasing pollution.

yes, I think that we have made great progress to become more environmentally friendly. it is sometimes a central issue in political campaigns. awareness has increased. as emily said, cars have been made to lessen pollutants getting into the air.

Okay so for my cocncern I chose air pollution. AIr pollution began in the US during the 1900s basically when the industrial revolution ocurred. During the 1960's, '70's. and 90's we have been passing laws and acts totry and stopd the pollution. We have aslo created organizations to just cause that pollutant alone. It isn't enough though because we are still killing 4.6 million people a year from it.
I think we are improving what we started, but it really isn't enough. More people have to participate...not only more americans, but others from around the world too. We are not only harming are selves but the enviroment too. We still dump pullutants into the ocean and have a huge population.

Now for what i could do to help the enviroment....well i could make a garden, or just respect the enviroment by just umplugging unused lamps and not littering...I could even just start recycling all the papers i collect from each schoolyear instead of just dumping it all in the garbage.
 

In my opinion, the most important issue around since 1970 is pollution. The American population eats gas faster than I eat muffins (and that's pretty damn fast.) This causes a lot of harm to the earth, in particular the ozone layer of the atmosphere.

I think that we have made absolutely no progress whatsoever in reducing the size of our eco-footprint. You could argue that each consecutive year we have done more and more to protect our planet, but the damage already done remains, and continues to pile up.

One thing we can do to help eliminate the problem of pollution is to stop buying Hummers with gas tanks half the size of Canada that get 2 miles per gallon! grr...

Yeah,we may have tried to decrease pollution with things like hybrid cars..but not everyone is going to immediatly say "hey pollution is bad,im going to buy a car." so maybe coming up with more car-related pollution solvers will help.wait...dont they have a new kind of gas? i honestly dont know...but probably..that helps too

Car pooling will certainly decrease car pollution...or Hey! heres and idea...walk...that will solve two problems,obesity and pollution.
 

In 1970 two big concerns in global communities were growth of population and pollution. which today is deffinetly a concern. in the past 20 uyears our population has grw and pollution and has definetly increased. we have so many factories that pollute the air and our cars don't help out the world to much. but we have made new technologies that will hopefully change these effects coming from pollution that much more people should use.

i believe we have improved a little but not enough. we all need to work together and become "friends" with the enviornment. we need rto stop wasting water in the bathroom, stop using plastic bags, and start using enviornmentally friendly light-bulbs.

one original concern from earth day 1970 was global warming. global warming is still a huge issue today, mainly caused by the rising of carbon-dioxide, being produced by us.

i DO think that we're trying to be more economically friendly cuz we have like deisal fuel, people are trying to use solar and wind energy more, and we recycle--- although...since we have more people, which means more homes and furniture and other wood-based products, deforestation of our rain forests is causing us to lose one of the main protagonists in the fight to deplete carbon-dioxide. so i dont really no if we're actually helping of making it worse.

OKAY SO! i totally agree with slippers. um pollution was a huge problem in the 1970's and obviously still is! its ruining the environment and killing animals. i mean come on, if you knew that you were responsible for a ducks death, how would you feel? it is a huge problem and the goverment is slowly and not so efficently taking charge. they have littering laws now to fine you, but they rarely ever catch you...

i think our eco-footprint has gotten smaller. although its not happening fast enough, we are still working on reducing the pollution. car manufacturers are making progress on the new hybrids that dont pollute the air with gases. and honestly, i think the littering law MIGHT be cutting down the amount people litter.

okay now, we can help this problem in a whole bunch of ways. you can do anything to conserve energy.. turn off lights/tv/radio when not in room, you can decrease the time you keep the refrigerator and freezer open, you can help clean up neighborhoods with garbage and volunteer to help clean up lakes, ponds and rivers and decrease the time you spend in a car- get some exercise, walk to places within walking distance! there are plenty of other ways to help out, everyone should start!

There were many problems in 1970, one being overpopulation. Since there is so much people in this world the pollution grew so much. It is still a problem to this day. I think we have made very little progress in helping the envoronment. Like everyone else said, yea...there coming out with new solar and electric powered cars...but there is so much more that we can do.

There is a lot you can do to help. You can STOP LITTERING and like Kellyn said, instead of just throwing all of your end of the year papers just recycle them. Unpluging unfused lamps etc.
