WEEK ONE PERIOD 3
Comments:
Woot! I'm first, for once. Ok, first off, would I be a "borrowed ladder?" I really don't know. If I was in the same position as Eugene, I guess yes, because I would have nothing else to do with my life.
By today's standards, I would want my child to be born naturally. It makes things more interesting, and it seems more natural...obviously.
I wouldn't have my "mate" sequenced. If you did that, your life would ust be so boring...some people make it their life's goal to find the perfect partner, so why go ahead and plan it?
From today's standards, I would hire this person. I feel that everyone deserves a chance at life.

hey guys!

If my genetics was interfering with my dreams I would probably be a borrowed ladder. I definitely support Vincent in his decision; he’s just trying to follow his dream. Many parents want to ensure that their children have the perfect life, but that is just not possible. For example, look at Eugene, he had everything and yet he still was able to get hurt. I would definitely not want to choose my child as Vincent’s parents chose their second child. I would want my child to be born naturally. How can anyone ever really succeed in life without having to experience any difficulty? Difficulties make one stronger and allow them to learn about life. If everything is figured out from the start then what is the purpose of living?

If I were in Eugene's position, I would be a borrowed ladder. That would be like choosing between being a janitor and a volleyball player. I can't think of one reason why I wouldn't want to be. I'm not sure if I would or wouldn't want to choose my child's attributes. It would probably depend on how many other parents were doing this. If my child would be an outcast because I didn't choose their characteristics then I probably would. Likewise, if not many people did this I would probably leave it to chance. I might also choose a few and leave the rest to be chosen naturally.

Ok i would only be a borrowed ladder if I was in the same position as Eugene, but besides that i wouldn't. I deff. think that i would want my child to be born naturally, because the baby would come out as God intended him/her to be. I wouldn't want my partner sequenced. I wouldn't want it planned out, like in the movie, i wouldn't want to know when im gonna die because that ruins all the excitement and joy that life brings you.

i wouldn't be a borrowed ladder no matter what. I believe in making the best of what you have. In this case it would be making the best of what someone else had. I personally wouldn't want to choose my children. that would make their life too easy, & easy is boring. Plus difficulties have 2 outcomes. One outcomes in a stronger person. The other destroys a person. If the child doesn't get stronger they are spiritually weak, & won't succeed in life. plus i believe chances make life fun

I would not be a "borrowed ladder" under any circumstances. I like who I am, and I would not change a thing. ^^ For the other question, I did number 4. If I was am employer, I would hire this employee. There is still a 30% chance that he won't develop Multiple Sclerosis. Besides, there is so much that this employee can accomplish in a year.

I wouldn't be a borrowed ladder. I think that's because I believe I am the way I am for a reason. Possibly, if I was in the same situation as Eugene I would do it. But definitely not if there was no extreme situation.
2. I really don't see why any parent would want to eliminate the surprise of having a child by ensuring their characteristics. The only thing I would want to make sure of is that they wouldn't develop any diseases. I would only choose the health of my child, but not traits like Vincent's parents did with their second child simply because I would want to be surprised. No matter what my child looked like, I would still love him/her. So I see no point in choosing.

Yes, I would be a “borrowed ladder” because if I wanted to do something && I wasn’t allowed to because of my DNA then I would do it! I would want my child to be protected from any diseases and be able to enjoy life to the fullest. A positive of having your partner sequenced would be good to see if your child could have any problems either in the womb or while they were growing. A negative of having you partner sequenced is that you might find out something that you really don’t wan to find out. Yes, I would hire this person because of the fact that it is a probability and it might not happen and if it turns out that it does happen well there are plenty of people in the world that might want his job and I’ll just replace him. =]

1. I would only be a "borrowed ladder" if the person i will be giving my things really needed it. if it was more resourceful to them then i would help them out. but if it was for a lame reason i would not be a borrowed ladder. its something that is risky but for the right cause can be good.

2. Even though it would be better to know what your child was going to be like, i think i would not do have my baby like Vincent's parents had their second child. it ruins the gift of not knowing and loving your child no matter what. it is like making a toy. you should not be able to do that for your child. even though it would be better to find the probability of what your baby could develop but why would you wanna know? Not knowing is what makes life a mystery and using genetic scans defeats the purpose of the miracle of having a child.

Hey everyone! I would not be a borrowed ladder because it is not who you are. I think everyone is made the way they are for a reason. It just is not natural.

I would only have my partner sequence if and only if i truley felt like they were hiding something from me. I think that people with that technology should use it.

Thank you and Good Day!

1. I think that I would be a "broken ladder" under certain conditions. For example, if by being one I would be able to impact other people's lives, and was well qualified (other than what my DNA shows) to do something good with my life, then I would be a "broken ladder" so that I could do so. Also, I would be a "broken ladder" if it meant that I would be able to change things so that everyone had equal opportunities. However, if I just sat around and did nothing I would not become a "broken ladder" because I would still be useless.

2. Although many parents would, I'm sure, want to have "perfect children" and know every possible thing about them, I don't think that I would. I would want my child to be a surprise, and appreciate every moment rather than dread the next. I would NEVER want to know when I, or my children, are going to die or why. If I know this fact then I would live my life always dreading it and be too cautious and scared to live my life the way I want.

3. I would not want my partner to be sequenced. I want to choose my own partner, and take my time in doing so. I don't want someone that I don't even know trying to "shake my hand", if you know what I'm saying. :)

4. Yes, I would still hire this person. So what if there is a chance that they will get MS, there is always a chance that you might die, no one is ever safe from that risk no matter what. Even still, there is a 30% chance that this person will be fine, and if they are best suited for the job then I would give it to them without a second thought.

1. I would be a borrowed ladder just like the real Jerome because I don't think there is anything wrong with my heart, or brain, or anything. I can do everything just fine and if someone needed to use my DNA to achieve their dreams, then power to them. *grins*

2. Would I sequence my lover? Nah. But there are both positive and negative effects to it. It would be good in the way that you could check when their going to die and maybe if they have a disease that would make your partner freaky. But I think I'll take my chances...

3. I would hire the person because even though they don't have long, the machines could be wrong and well, like Miss Smith said, Everyone deserves a fair shot at life.

i think that i would be a "borrowed ladder" only if i couldnt really do anything anymore and someone else needed my dna to follow their dreams. i wouldnt just give out my dna freely though because thats basically who u r?
also i would want my child to be born naturally, and not like vincent's parents had their second son.
also as for the "mate" thing i would not have them sequenced because nobody's perfect and i think if you knew peoples flaws it would make a more critical person about everything and that would make you look at things in a negative way instead of positively.

also i would hire the man who had the 70% chance of multiple sclerosis because he still deserves to have a shot at the job like everyone else and if hes the most qualified then he definitely deserves it.

#1 probably not as I'm really not a risk taker. I would only be a borrowed ladder if I was really in a tight spot

#2 I would have my children screened and altered, but only to remove diseases. probably even give him/her a boost in academics/athletics. But I'd want to leave all the harmless surprises (eyes, hair, boy or girl, etc.) alone. give room for some variation.

Jessica Woeckener

hello,

Okay well I don't think I would personally want to be a borrowed ladder. Life wouldnt be interesting that way. Of course I wouldnt want a chance to die at a young age just because I was born anturally, but i wouldnt want to know that I was going to die at age 32 in December at 4;52 pm...nothing like that. I think if I was a borrowed ladder I would get bored knowing that I have a good heart..instead of trying to make it better, you get what I am saying? I would rather try and do good than already be good.

I wouldn't wnat be paretents to make sure I was "perfect" because once again it would be deathly boring. I like to live at the moment and I don't like to know what is going to come. I liek the element of surprise. Life jsut wouldn't be the same otherwise.

Jessica Woeckener...

oopps I said my parents I meant my kids.

I would not be a borrowed ladder. I would fight the practice of using DNA to determine social status in court. I would not "choose" my child. I think that is wrong and unethical. Noone would ever grow up or go through hardships if they're "perfect". This is evident in Vincent's brother. He is a little loser who can't stand it when someone beats him.

1. i dont think i would be a borrowed ladder because its not who i really am. i wouldnt want to put myself in a position where im impersonating somebody else just to accomplish something. i would rather be myself and make the best out of what i have, like "peanut" said.

2. i would deffinately NOT choose my child's traits so that he/she would be perfect. i think it would be more fun to just find out what happens along the way, and not have prior knowledge of everthing in store for my kid.

"Good Day" Anna?
lol what a nerd...but i shouldnt be talking. =P

1.
It would depend if I would be a borrowed ladder, if I were happy then no I would not be a borrowed ladder because I would be happy but if I had a life like Vincents then yes I would be a borrowed ladder because I would try any way to make my life better.

2.
Im sorry to say but I would probably would have a child like vincents brother because the baby would have a better chance at a better life and outcome then a baby like Vincent.

I would only be a borrowed ladder if I was in Jerome's position. Life would be boring with nothing to do as an invalid.

I would hire the person even though he/she could develop multiple sclerosis in a year. A lot of work could be done within a year and he/she is the most quailfied person in their field of work. Also since it's 70%, there's a small chance that they might be perfectlly fine.

1. Would I be a borrowed ladder? Uh. I don't know. From what I saw in the movie, it looked like a lot of work, and kind of risky. Plus, even if your being a borrowed ladder to get to acheive something, you're not the one getting credit for it. It's all under someone else's name. I guess I wouldn't want to be one, and just be happy with myself.
2. I wouldn't want my kids screened to be the perfect mix. It would be more exciting to have a surprise. Ok, so they'll have some problems, but I think I'll take the good with the bad.
but
I'm not sure, I wouldn't want my kid to be born with some sort of terminal illness that could've been prevented.

1. hey its cashew...i would not be a borrowed ladder because as we saw in the movie it really complicated things when Anton came to search the real Jerome (Eugene). There was just too much lying involved and I would be a nervous wreck always making sure not to get caught.

2. Although no one is technically "perfect", in the eyes of a parent, a son or a daughter is. Therefore, no matter what their genetic make up was or what it told for their future, i would let life take its course and not choose my child like Vincent's parents did for Anton.

1. Would you be a “Borrowed Ladder”? Explain.

Nope, most likely not. It's not who you are, and it's not who you are supposed to be. I think I'd like to create and accomplish my own goals in life, and not live in someone else's shoes.

2. Wouldn't every parent want to ensure that their child was perfect and had the attributes of physical attractiveness, intelligence and athletic prowess to be able to do whatever he or she wanted in life? Would you choose your child as Vincent’s parents chose their second child? Why or why not?

Why wouldn't parents want the children to live life the way they were meant to and have the characterisitcs that they were meant to have? If every parent gave their children a good physical appearance, intelligence, and made them athletic, then no one would be special in the world, and everyone would be the same. I wouldn't choose my second child like Vincent's parents did, and not choose traits, to just take what you get... you could be happier with the all natural baby than the genetically made one.

WOuld i want to be a borrowed ladder. Duh! If you are a degenerate and you want to make your self have a real job that requires complex thought (sorry janitors don't cut it) I read all of the comments before me. some people are just wierd with it and are undecided and will go with the majority to fit in. Alot of people are nieve. Because if your a borrowed ladder you are still yourself and everything and you are not changing your genetics, you are cheating the system (being a rebel)and making the best out of ur situation. So thats not an excuse. Most people don't completly understand what it is asking. A borrowed ladder is the degenerate who is faking being someone who is a genetic modified being. Not the genetic modified being. ANd all the people who say they wouldn't be a borrowed ladder but would modify your kids is just crazy. If you want risks (for the baby part) then why won't you take any risks to improve you future. It is who you are. It is discrimination and you are overcomeing it. They do thier own work and everything. Like vincent was meant to be a space navigater but wouldn't becasue he is an Invalid. He overcame the challege and discrimination by using a loophole (basically) Dam! am i wrong about the deffinition of borrowed ladder or is everyone else?? Nope just looked i am right. Well then 90.1565% (random) either didn't pay attention in the movie periods or just don't understand. YOu are borrwing the ladder so that makes you the borrowed ladder. The person lending the ladder.... anyone.... lended ladder? maybe. All the people who want to fight the system: doubt it as you are a minortity being suppressed by everyone else. and anton is competive not a loser. ALot of people get mad when they lose, especially to an inferior person or team. And who cares about you not getting credit. it is about forfilling you dreams. wow i wrote alot.

2. WOuld i have a kid go throigh screening to make him better. Heck yeh i would. Honestly you might think of it as immoral but what parent doesn't want to give thier kids a decisive edge in life with a better chance to live? NOt many. And when we all become parents we will all see this. Not complety but a lot of peopel who are growing up in this generzation will becasue they want thier kids to fill their dreams of becoming a baseball star or actress, or scienctist. ok that looks good.

Whether or not I would be a borrowed ladder depends on the circumstances. In Eugene's circumstances, I most certainly would be.

The assumption that every parent wants their child to be artificially perfect is a large and incorrect one. People have held pride in their children for thousands of years without the help of any genetic engineers. Personally, however, I would like the best opportunities for my children.

Hm. I guess I would be a borrowed ladder. I would want to try and make the best that I can of myself even if that means changing my identity. If I am not a borrowed ladder, than I would get nowhere in life.

I would have to say that every parent might want a perfect child, but that would be so boring. There would be no goals to set. No accomplishments to reach. I think I would treat all my kids the same. They all have my genetics and therefore should each be treated fairly.

I don't think I would have my partner sequenced. It would just ruin the relationship and make things worse. If it was truely a relationship than the person should have already confessed to things.

I would hire this person because I believe that everyone should be treated fairly. If they will get a sickness than they will get it. You can't help it. You mind as well let people live their life to the fullest.

Goodmorning : - )
12 May 2007

I would not be a borrowed ladder because I wouldn't want to risk my life just so someone can get a job.
4. I would not hire this person because although he or she would be a good worker they would only be good for a year so it is a waste.

Yes I would become a borrowed ladder if it meant I was to pursue what my passion. I believe Vincent decided to go as far as to get leg extensions to become an astronaut was great because he pursued what he wanted. I think that if you have a moral goal you should not let anyone stand in your way and not hurt anyone on your path to your goal. Last I would never have a genetically picked child just to say he is the best. No, I would like to see my child grow to his or her position in life rather than being born to magnificence of being perfect. Also a man or woman who has something to prove shows their greatest attributes and their best efforts to reach their goal when others tell them they can’t if that person is competitive. Something that is said to be invincible at the moment becomes beatable. I tend to do my best in sports when I am told I can’t.

Would I be a "borrowed ladder"? I really DO NOT know. Like Elias said, it would depend on the circumstances. If I was Eugene, then I would definitely be a borrowed ladder.

I would not have my mate sequenced... flaws make us all individuals. Like Alana, I believe that life would be very boring if people did that. I think that things are meant to happen for a reason.

Hey Alana "Oh snap!" LOL.

Yes i would be a borrowed ladder because i wouldnt want to be helded back. I would ignore all the risks. If i was in the employers position and i had a choice from other people i wouldnt hire him because i wouldnt want him to die. Even thought i still dont think this concept is right.
