I learned that there are more than 20 million children orphaned in Africa because of HIV/AIDS. I had known that there were children in this situation, but I didn't realize that it was that many. I also did not know that just in that country 110 people die of HIV/AIDS every day.

The Yellowstone AIDS project is one group from the site. I learned that through rapid testing, people can obtain HIV test results in 20 minutes.

A local organization is ARCS, or AIDS related community service. I learned that they are the largest organization in the Hudson Valley dedicated solely to HIV/ AIDS services.

I learned from the site that there are many children being affected by AIDS. There were 2 million infected children at the end of 2007, but many more that are indirectly affected. Many chidren have to work and are the primary wage earners of their family because their parents can't. This makes me realize how lucky we are to not have to do this. It also makes me think that we should be doing more to help people in this situation, because they are much worse off than us.
 

I learned that more than 3 million people are now receiving life-prolonging antiretroviral therapy,to help with AIDS. I am glad that there are some ways to help people with AIDS. I think that the AIDS virus originated as a result of chimps being killed and eaten, or their blood getting into cuts or wounds on the person hunting the chimps. I beleive that this theory is supported by the fact that every time the virus was passed from a chimpanzee to a man, it would have developed in a slightly different way within his body, and thus produced a slightly different strain ofthe virus. There are several different strains of the virus which in turn show that the virus could have originated from chimps.

According to the center for disease control and provention 56,300 new HIV infections occurred in the United States in 2006. That is alot of people that are infected with HIV/AIDS. There are too many people with the virus,and it needs to be stopped,there needs to be a cure,people should not die like this.
 

i have feelings for this blog. i learned that HIV/AIDS is very dangeros if you dont catch it at the right time. it is a bad dieciese to my opinion. it is bad because so many people get it. i think that people should look for a cure for HIV/AIDS.
 

I have learned, by watching this video that the amount of orphans drastically increase by day. Soon there will be 20 Million left with no home & no one to love them. HIV/AIDS is very serious and hurts bilions of families all around the world. MOthers, Fathers, Aunts, Uncles, cousins, ect. die hourly.

The Avert Association promotes the prevention & obstacles to overcome in order to stay healthy. The following precautions should be taken into account: the use of condoms, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, HIV testing, and the lesser amount of drug use. Each year, approximately 56,000 humans die of AIDS in America. HIV Prevention in America should be taken serious & speakers of any sort should knowledge those who are less familular with these facts.

The local organization is ARCS, they raise awareness by doing annual walks. This year, due to the Wall Street crisis, there is a 6% decrease in the funds raised.

I feel that this is a very touchy subject. It is very scary thing to think about. I really think that this is not a waste of money & anyone who disagree's with me is unbelievable. There needs to be a solution to the HIV/AIDS disease. The world cannot go on like this. It is terrible. AMerica should be less greedy & help those in desperate need. Do not walk by any sort of cancer, HIV/AIDS donations. There is obviously a reason that this money is needed. Without question, the cure needs to be found, miracles need to start blooming.
 

I learned that 20 million children in the next six years will have been orphaned by HiV/AIDS. This video showed me that HIV/AIDS is an issue that is able to effect millions of people worldwide.

From the site, I read about the AIDS Drug Assistance program. ADAP supplies antiretroviral drugs to people who do not have the means to obtain them.

ARCS is the local organization that is dedicated to raise HIV/AIDS awareness.I learned that they give free HIV testing if you have an appointment.

I learned alot about HIV/AIDS from these websites. It brought it to a new perspective for me. Now I know that even one person can make a difference in the world. People like Maggie do not have to live like that if we all joined together to think of a solution. The world can not stand by and just watch. This will utlimately come and effect our country deeply if we do not stop it.
 

By watching the video about Maggie I have learned that in most African countries, children are orphaned. I did not know that many of them do not have any parents or relatives for that manner. I also did not know that in the next few years, 20 million kids will become orphaned. I think that is terrbible, and I think most people don't even think that they can change the life of children over there.

AVERT is an international HIV and AIDS charity that is centered in the United Kingdom. AVERT recieves no government funding and runs purly on donations.

ARCS is a local organization that is involved in AIDS awareness. It stands for AIDS-related community services. ARCS’ mission is to "foster prevention and reduce the transmission of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and to ensure access, equity and justice for people who are affected by HIV in order to maximize their quality of life".

I never knew these facts about AIDS. I think it is really sad that children in Africa are losing their families while most Americans live a safer life. We are all equal and a person is a person, so I believe that more should be done to help those that are being effected by the virus. Personally, I do not know anyone that has had AIDS, nor does my parents. I do consider myself lucky for this, but sad that up to this point, I have been ignorant. I did read a book once written by a doctor who was one of the first docotrs to experiene AIDS in his practice. I still wonder what the numbers of people effected in the United States are?
 

1. I choose Thailand as a country to read about. Thailand was first impacted after 1984. Government prevention methods were aimed at specific groups and were not comprehensive enough to prevent an epidemic. Occurrences of HIV skyrocketed during the 80s and governmental measures were soon taken in the 90's followed up with introduction of the used of antiretroviral drugs, which are also known as ARVs.
2. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is a group that combats diseases in general. It provided the first official documentation of AIDS.
3. One local organization that is involved in AIDS awareness is ARCS (AIDS-related Community Services). You can volunteer in many ways to help ARCS such as participating in Food Drives and Walks.
4. I was very surprised to learn the extent to which AIDS has impacted children. The article "HIV, AIDS and Children" states, "90% of all children living with HIV acquired the infection from their mothers during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding." These were all children who were born, with nearly no chance of survival. Cases such as this are prevented with extensive prevented care in developed countries, but can not be in less developed ones. Preventing these children from receiving HIV should be a top priority for AIDS-prevention groups, because prevention methods are proven and effective.
 

After watching Maggie’s story I learned that there are 20 million orphans because of aids, and that in that village 100 people die a day which is a huge number of people killed just by aids. The people in Africa are hit very hard by aids because they are often poor to begin with and loosing parents and family members that are able to work makes living very hard, because of the lack of money for food.

From the website advert I learned that HIV not only makes people more susceptible to aids but also other disease even common disease that would normally not have that great of an effect on people. But since HIV attacks the immune system it makes fighting off disease very difficult. So common disease can be fatal to an HIV patient.

Arcs is a local aids foundation.

Aids has not affected any close loved ones but I am acquainted with a few people that have aids. One in particular really is inspiring to me. He goes to my church and I have known him for a long time. And I did know him for a long time before I knew he was infected by HIV. I would have never guessed any thing was wrong with this man, he never pitied himself or made anyone feel guilty for him. He lived his life and tried to make the best of what he had. I was informed of his illness when he was diagnosed with aids. This really made worried for him because he is such I kind man and the fact that some you know could have a disease that dangerous is scary because it can be fatal. He taught me to really cherish life and never pity your self because it only makes things harder to deal with.
 

I learned that 100 people die of AIDS everyday in Zambia. That leaves many orphaned children with no one to look after them and no ability to care for themselves.

I learned that Medicaid is a group that can help low income people. It can help them get perscription medication, such as the medication for HIV.

ARCS (AIDS Related Community Service) is a local organization that is involved in AIDS awareness. ARCS was formed in 1983 by a small group of lesbian and gay citizens.

I think it is terrible that there are that many people who are suffering from AIDS and HIV. I realized that there were a lot of people who had it, but I had no idea that 100 people died from it everyday in Zambia. There are probably just as many people dying from it in other countries around the world. I also never put much thought to the number of children that are left as orphans due to AIDS. I feel terrible about it and hope that a cure is found soon.

I believe that HIV was formed as an SIV in Africa. I think it was transfered to the humans by chimpanzes. As it was transferred, it was changed and became HIV. That would also explain why there are so many people in Africa with AIDS. Then HIV spread all around the world.
 

By watching this video, I learned a lot about HIV/AIDS. I wasn't aware of the extent of which this disease has grown until I watched this video. It is unimaginable that about 100 people die of HIV/AIDS in Zambia daily. The numbers are devastating.

By completing this blog assignment, I learned a lot. I found out what an immense impact that AIDS has on Africa and how common it is. There are so many orphans whose loved ones have died of HIV/AIDS and who are suffering because of their losses. It is extremely depressing to hear about. I also learned that, while there are many organizations and people willing to help this cause, there can never be enough volunteers and helpers. This blog assignment has really made me realize how widespread this disease has gotten.

It is estimated that within the next 6 years the number of orphans in Africa will grow to 20 million due to HIV/AIDS. People really need to start doing something about HIV/AIDS. This group focuses on reducing the number of new infections and to increase peoples' knowledge of this disease. The name of the local organization that is involved with AIDS awareness is ARCS. ARCS has many locations in Westchester, Orange, Sullivan, Dutchess, Rockland, Putnam, & Ulster Counties. This blog helped me realize how many Africans are orphans die to AIDS. I can't even believe that within 6 years there will be so many children with nothing. It is very sad to me to see young children suffering with this horrible disease. I think people should join these kind of organizations to try and stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.
 

When i watched the video on HIV/AIDS i learned about the million of orphaned kids in Africa, due to their parents dieing of the deadly virus. And everyday, the number of orphaned children increases.

The group i chose was the CDC and they set guidelines that called for automatic, routine HIV testing of all adults and adolescents attending a healthcare setting.

ARCS is the local organization that dedicates their time to the HIV/AIDS disease. On February 14, 2009 ARCS with be having a Hearts for ARCS Valentine's Charity Ball.

This blog has gotten me to understand a lot more things about the HIV/AIDS virus. Not only has it taught me more details about the actual virus, but it has also made me think about the millions living with HIV/AIDS today, and how their lives must be. To have such a deadly disease, and be forced to live that way everyday, as it is killing you, must take such a huge amount of strength. and for the people who take their times out of their days to help others, and donate money, or their time to organizations that help aids, are truley honest to god good people. Honestly, i don't know how others find the strength to be so happy, when they have such a grim ending, but i think thats what makes people admirable. their strength.

From the global site I learned that UNAIDS estimates there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children.

From the National site I learned that America’s response to the AIDS epidemic has produced mixed results. HIV prevention efforts have not always been successful and every year approximately 56,000 Americans are infected with HIV.

I learned that ARCS provides free rapid HIV testing by appointment at our Hawthorne office.
 

After watching the video, I learned that almost 20 million kids are orphaned in Africa because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This is pretty shocking and sad news to hear.

One group that works within America is the Ryan White Program, also known as the Comprehensive AIDS Rsources Emergency (CARE) Act. One fact I have learned is that the numbers of people living with HIV grow by around 56,000 every year.

One local organization that is involved in AIDS awareness is ARCS. It was founded in 1983 by a small group of lesbian and gay citizens who refused to stand idly by in the face of government inaction while other people died.

I learned a lot from this blog. It gave me a lot of useful information and effectively spreads awareness. Reading this makes me want to do more to help this cause and these people. Even buying small things and donating money for this cause can help at least one infected person out there. I now also realize that these viruses not only affect the infected person, but their family as well. All those children in Africa like Maggie are proof of this. It must be extremely scary to live by yourself at such a young age like some of the kids in Africa. This thought makes me so grateful for what I have.From what I've been taught in health class, the HIV virus originated from chimps and then spread to humans. I have a feeling that the humans may have eaten or got the chimp's blood in their system for the virus to have spread.

One group that I viewed is ARCS. One group that is located in Tampa Florida goes by the name of Tampa Bay AIDS Network. One fact that I obtained through the site was that they service to more than 11,000 people in the Tampa Bay area. A local organization is ARCS. ARCS stands for AIDS Related Community Service. One fact that I learned is that they have a Hudson Valley AIDS walk in 2008. They raised over 25,000 dollars for people with AIDS in the Hudson Valley. From this blog, I learned that there are many people with HIV/AIDS and that number keeps increasing every day. I did not realize that so many people are afflicted with this disease. I think that it is great that there are many different ways to help out. I do not know anybody with HIV/AIDS. We need to find the cure so the number of people with the infection decreases.

After choosing our home country of America I learned that most of the people that contract aids in this country are gay men and injecting drug users. One thing different about this country is that we are putting forth millions of dollars to put AIDS prevention into our education program.
In the Latino group I learned that deaths have remaided stable even due to the migration patterns.

From the blog I learned so many people are suffering from AIDS world wide. I never knew it has so much effect on so many different locations. I do not know anybody besides famous people who has spoke publicly about it. This did not have any impact on my life though.
My thoughts on the origin of the virus is from the white-colored monkey in western Africa. This could of happened because earlier when there were hunting and gathering tribes and even closer to today monkeys could of been used as a food source. Also because HIV is a mutating virus it could a mutated to affect humans.
My reaction to the link with ARCS greatly relieves me to know there are people out there who are actually trying to help.
 

From the video, I learned about the country of Zambia as one of the many places that is greatly affected by AIDS. The video was very moving, and it made me aware of the horrible situations that are going on globally. I realize the severity of AIDS and how poverty-stricken children struggle to stay alive with the least bit of hope. I really like the end of the video: “You have one life-do something.” I think that is an important principle for everyone to follow throughout their life no matter where they want to go.
The Utah AIDS Foundation educates and makes people aware of AIDS. It is a local organization that helps people living in the Intermountain region. Services and fundraisers are conducted often to help the cause.
The Arcs Foundation is a local foundation that helps spread awareness of AIDS. I learned that recently, on Saturday, September 27th, they sponsored a walk in Poughkeepsie called the Hudson Valley AIDS walk. About 300 people went and they raised over $25,000!
I believe that AIDS origin is from a similar virus called SIVsm, (the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) which is found in sooty mangabey or White-collared monkey, that live in western Africa.
This blog was very informative. I learned a lot about AIDS, including the origins, the treatment, people who are more prone, and also about organizations that help support the cause. I enjoyed the video the most because it really exposed me to the world outside of my safety zones.
From the site, I learned about the people whjo are sometimes forgotten: the older people. Because they care for their young ones, they are often also exposed to the virus.
I have no connections with people impacted with the virus. However based on movies and books, I am very aware of the situation.

I believe that the HIV/ AIDS diease orginated from primates in Africa when tribes began to eat these monkeys. The virus soon changed into something that could kill humans
 

The country I chose was the UK. I learned that UK has the highest number of homosexual men that are diagnosed with HIV.

I chose age group. The group that has the highest percentage (16%) of people diagnosed with HIV by 2006 was 40-44.

One local organization would be ARCS. Arcs represent AIDS related community services.

I believe that white monkeys are the origin of the virus. AIDS must of originated when African communites began to consume these monkeys. The virus adapted to something humans are able to contract. The epidemic must of spread when people traveled to each other. This could also be true because mokey have a similiar virus.
 

Global- I learned that AIDS is very common all over Africa. Also many orphans are made daily due to AIDS in Africa. AIDS is a serious problem in that country and even all of Africa.

Personal- I knew (not personally)a person with AIDS. My uncle's brother was a Homosexual and had HIV. It eventually turned into AIDS.He died about ten years ago and I never meet him. It was sad because his family kept it a secret of what he died from due to so little being known at the time about AIDS/HIV. I just found out recently about this.
 

The country that i choose for the HIV and AIDS day topic is Zimbabwe. I picked Zimbabwe because at least four million people have died in this country between 2002 and 2006. In addition, I learned that the infant morality rate has doubled since 1990. In addition, the average life expectancy for women, who are particularly affected by Zimbabwe's AIDS epidemic, is 34- the lowest anywhere in the world. Nine officials from the World Health Organization have admitted that since this figure is based on data collected two years ago, the real number may be as low as 30.

In a national state, I learned that African Americans are infected with HIV and AIDS, than any other race adn ethnicity in the world. It is estimated that 409,982 African Americans have HIV and AIDS, over the course of 2003 to 2006.

My personal reaction to AIDS, is that it is a very said topic. Alot of innocent people every year dies of HIV and AIDS. A person that has affected my life that has aIDS is, Magic Johnson. He taught every one that, even though that he has a disease, you should still live your life to the fullest and accomplish stuff that a normal person can do. We do not know how many people developed AIDS in the 1970s, or indeed in the years before. We do now know that the AIDS virus HIV probably had its origins in Africa. i have learned, that thereare a massive amounts orphans that drastically increase by day. there will be 20 Million left with no home and no one to take care of them. hiv/aides is a serious and common virus that plages africa. being born in kenya i can make a personal connection to hiv aids. one of my close family members as hiv and a little daughter. she as be very carefull not to even transmite this virus to her love ones. me personal i used to be close to this person but now i scared i might contract this virus know that you can't get by touching but i'm still scared.
some people belive this virus came from a person eating a Simian Immunodeficiency or a White-collared monkey in africa. to the other link i don't think hiv came from gay men just having sex put from a mutasion.
 

This video tells the tale of Maggie, a 9 year old girl, who lost most of her family members, which includes her grandparents, her parents, and her younger brother. She currently resides in Zambia with her great-grandmother. The video tells facts, like 100 people die a day from HIV/AIDS in Zambia, and because of this, many African children become orphans. I’ve learned the theory, that in 6 years, 20 million African children will become orphans. These numbers are truly overwhelming. It is true when the narrator says, “They (the people) do nothing and the numbers of suffering children continue to grow…you have the power to impact the life of one child, unless you do nothing”.

From the AVERT website, I’ve learned that as of 2006, around 448,871 people have AIDS in the Americas. New York, California, Florida, and Texas have the highest amount of people. In New York, there are 70,845 who live with AIDS. The local group that is involved with AIDS is known as ARCS, or Aids Related Community Service. They are currently protesting the New York State budget cuts that will limit the amount of money on HIV/AIDS research and services.

I’m extremely shocked with the information about HIV/AIDS. That video that I watched was horrifying. It made me think about how hard these children are holding onto their life. I don’t know if I can live in “Maggie’s shoes”. If my family was mostly dead, and all I have left is my old great-grandmother that could suddenly die, I would always be stressed knowing that tomorrow might be the last day together. On the AVERT website, it shows the HIV/AIDS time line. The first thing that caught my eye was the ignorance of Western scientists and doctors in the 1970s. As I scrolled down the page, I observed many medication attempts; in 2007, another HIV vaccine is halted because it showed no benefit. Hopefully, one day these scientists won’t lose hope and motivation to find a cure that will save millions of people’s lives.
 

Global:
After watching the video “Maggie’s Story,” I have learned some interesting facts. In Maggie’s town, about 100 people die every day because of AIDS. The number of orphans is expected to grow to more than 20 million within the next 6 years due to AIDS.

National:
I learned that the organization CDC gives almost half of its $652 million budget to programs designed for African Americans.

Local:
One local organization is ARCS. One fact about the organization is they recently held a walk to raise money and awareness, and in February, they are hosting a charity ball.

Personal:
I always thought that HIV/AIDS awareness should get more attention. I never realized how much of an impact it’s causing. I did understand that HIV/AIDS is a big deal, but this blog has taught me many things. I learned about how much HIV/AIDS is affecting orphans in Africa, and what is expected to happen. I really hope that our generation and generations to come are more aware of HIV/AIDS, and that we do something. If everyone thinks that they’re just one person, and can’t affect anything, then nothing will be done. Every person counts, and every person can help. I hope that we can make a difference and stop the spread of this disease. I hope we can find a cure, or at least get closer to finding a cure.
 

I learned that UK has the most diagnosis for the HIV virus. This was found for most gay relationships in the UK though.

Initially HIV and AIDS mainly affected gay men and intravenous drug users (IDUs) within the black community, much as it did in the rest of the population. I found this true for African American population groups.

The annual AIDS walk is the local organization in Poughkeepsie. The purpose of this group is to inform drug abusers and aware AIDS victims.

As to a personal link to AIDS, I have no connection. My opinion is that it is a disease that may cause trouble now, but can eventually be treated. As to get AIDS is treatable early, but being born with it may be a problem. It wouldn't be the kids fault, but there is nothing that can be done about it. I personally feel sympathy for these kind of people, because I'm sure it isn't a fun thing to be living with, knowing your days are counted. I believe that if it is more looked into than eventually in time this can be cleared up and done with.

BAS or the Bronx AIDS Services is located in the Bronx and is a non-profit organization. They help approximately 8,000 residents each year with HIV/AIDS.

I believe that the SIV theory is most likely possible for the explanation for the origin of HIV/AIDS. I think that the epidemic is much worse than it may have been let on and seen by most people. The epidemic not only affects the people who have HIV/AIDS, but the family members. It’s horrible how so many kids are left without parents, an education, and emotion devastation.
