I think that Tobias decision on whether to participate in the study or not depends on if he values his ethics and morals over his disablilty. If Tobias sees his morals as second and helping his disability first, then he should participate. If he doesn't, then he shouldn't. Personally, I would participate in the study because it may lead to a breakthrough which may help other patients.

that is the bioethics dilemma ... which should win personal gain or personal values. so what do you think? do you stick to your moral belief? or do you reevaluate you belief system b/c of a benefit that is personal?

I think Tobias should stick with developing his research. In that conflict between your values and what you really need, I would say the values might not weigh as heavy on my conscious, but with Tobias's case his research can also benefit more than himself, so it really isn't personal gain alone as the long term result. The only personal problem with this stem cell research is that his wife Justine might be against it, which may influence him as well.
If it were up to him entirely, than I think he should go with the research.

Stem Cell Controversy

I think that Tobias should participate in the studies. Although it is against his belief, it will benefit him in the end. Since this is a clinical study, i agree conditions might be a bit more risky, but this will help scientists possibly improve thier ways and have information for future references. If he doesn't participate in the study, then he might as well just sentence his death now. This new study and stem cells will help him get through this disease without taking the full force because of the dopamine being produced by the stem cells.

I know I would find and use any ways to save my life rather than go through the disease, dying, knowing I did the "right" thing.

Here is a link about what the stem cell companies do. This site might be a bit biased as it is from the company itself, but what they say-I think- is true. Another website, This shows pros and cons, although it is mostly for ethical reasons: "They believe that it is immoral to destroy a few-days-old human embryo, even to save or reduce suffering in existing human life."

I think Tobias should participate in the study. I think that if they are going to do the clinical study and use the embryos anyway than he should participate becaus even if he doesen't someone else will. Also even though it is against his and his wife's beliefs it will still help him in the end. Someone is going to use the embryos anyway so if it can help him he might as well participate. I know the study is a bit dangerous but it still could help him stay alive.

I believe that Tobias should participate in the study. Participating in the study, however, is contradictory to his cause. He is against stem cell use. Personally, I believe stem cell research and use is exeptable in society. Now faced with Parkinson's disease, Tobias cannot do much of anything else, unless he wishes to live out the rest of his life, not knowing if he may live to see many more days. I can see, though, how this is a non-ethical dicsision, because of the fact that he was against it in the first place. This topic and question are tricky, but I think it is important for people to think about situations like this, and rethink some beliefs, in order to be prepared for the future.

This is a link that helped me make my decision, along with some of the links on the page itslef!

I believe that Tobias' decision should be based on his own personal beliefs. Which outweighs the other: his personal ethics or his disability?? He should then choose depending on which he feels to be more important. However, if I were in his situation, I would participate in the study without thinking twice about it. Even if I was against stem cell research (which I am not), this could be a choice of life or death. I would rather live with the guilt (or die with the study results) than die without any research being provided. Also, if a cure or better treatment is found because of his participation in the study, than it could help with other patients and diseases.

I beleive that Tobais should decide based on his own personal beleif. My own personal beleif is that we should have stem cell research, but I am not really sure, because I also think that the stem cells could become a person just like me or you. I think that Tobais should participate in the study. I think that he should because he wants to live, and I guess the stem cell is not really an embryo yet. I think it is a very hard decision though.

I believe that Tobias should participate in the study. Even though he and his wife are against it, he should still try it. It will deeply benefit him in the end. The scientists have high hopes that it will work, so he should give it a try. If he doesn’t try it then someone else will before him. Having Parkinson’s disease is something that I do not think that he wants for the rest of his life.

This link tells about stem cells..

I think Tobias should participate in the research. For starters, the Fetises have already been aborted and it would be good to find a use for them. It's not like they killed babies just for it, they were already aborted. Also, it is a totally different situation now that he needs them. He could also help other people with this research.Pros and Cons

i think that he should go to the study and participate. He should go and it might change his mind about everything. if he changes his mind, then he can learn the good and bads about the embryo use and that it is safe and helps prtect your body and is
natural to use it.

I think that Tobias should participate in the study, because it could save his life one day. If he didn't go, then he would never know what kind of breakthrough could have been made. He would also potentially be saving other lives in addition to his own if progress was made. This site is about something similar to the topic, except that the stem cells are directly taken from the patient. It shows that the majority of people (almost 80%) had a strong improvement after treatment. Maybe something like this could happen for Tobias if he does the study

I think Tobias should really think about his choices, because from my point of view he was against doing this research because he did not have Parkinson's. This seems that he is only out for his self preservation. ALthough all American's are for their own preservation, it is based personal belief. I disagree with his choices, but this is his Tobias' decision. I personally am undecided becuase I envy children and to kill an embryo for others preservation is not my thing. On the other hand, many people are dying and these embryo's stem cells can help find cures to other diseases and cancers. I am so undecided, I really do not favor either side, I am totally neutral.

Undecided!

I do not think Tobias should participate in stem cell if it involves the destruction of the fetus.

Stem cell research is completely wrong when using the fetus. The only time it should be researched is with adult stem cells and Umbilical cord stem cells. Even though people say the fetus is not living it still has the opportunity to live and taking that away is murder in my mind. This brings me to my views of abortion because I also believe there is only certain time when that is acceptable.

Yes stem cells can become extremely useful but it is not humane we need to find other cures. Because your just killing lives to save lives and that is wrong because that begins to make it seem like some lives are more important then others. The more humane ways of gaining stem cells is acceptable and has great potential. But once you begin using the fetus it turns a good thing bad.

I think Tobias should participate in the study. If it means saving his life, i believe he should do it. I would most certainly do it. yes, i'm aware that they use unborn fetuses to recieve the cells, (and i am completely aware of how horrible this sounds, i'm sorry in advance) but, it wasn't like III killed the baby. it was someone elses choice to kill the baby, or, it was god's choice to kill(yeicks that sounds harsh, god killing .. but i can't think of a better word) the baby. In no way am i condemning the act of abortion, but what i am saying is that someone that was taken away from this world, and can no longer come back, if cells inside of them, could save my life, a family memebers life, or a friends life, i would take the chance. I understand that sounds incredibly horrible, but i'm being honest. i would choose to participate in the stem cell research and i think Tobias should too.

I believe that Tobias should partake in this study. Even though it is against his and Justine's beliefs, it would help him immensely. The use of stem cells is still a very dangerous procedure, but I think that it is a good idea to use stem cells to help with his battle with Parkinson's Disease. If they are going to have studies on this then he might as well take part in it because if he doesn't some one else will. Also, if it doesn't work out then he could save others. In the end, I think it would be better for him and his wife if he participated in this risky procedure.

I think Tobias should participate in the research program. It would give him a chance to possibly help other people who also suffer from Parkinson's disease. I say his personal gains are more important than his moral beliefs. If his health is possibly at risk, he will need to overlook some moral beliefs in order to save himself and possibly set an example for others who want to take part in this program.

This talks about some many benefits from stem cell research.

Although an embryo is lost, it's not like the baby would have a great life if it was here. If the baby's mother was willing to give it up before birth, what makes someone sure that she wouldn't give him/her up after the baby is born.

I cannot speak for Tobias himself and make the decision for him but if I was him I would participate in the clinical study. I know people have personal beliefs but when it comes to your life I would put my beliefs aside. I myself have my own opinions but when my life is in danger or you are uncomfortable I would use the treatment. I don't understand the reasons why people don't like stem cell research since it isn't harmful. If I was Tobias I would agree to do the research since it isn't harmful and your life is not what you want it to be.

Yes, I believe that Tobias should participate in the stem cell research. Although he is against the practice, he needs to think of the other people. Over 100 million Americans suffer from diseases that could be cured or treated with stem cell research. These people suffer from diabetes, spinal cord injuries, heart diseases, genetic disorders, and other hundreds of rare immune diseases. Tobias needs to understand that stem cell research will benefit more than one person. Sometimes people need to overlook their moral or religious beliefs to save other people’s lives. There is even new research where stem cells can be derived from skin cells so the human embryos will be protected.

I do not think Tobias should participate in the study. What are we without our morals and individual beliefs? These beliefs give meaning and a purpose to your live. He has worked for many years against stem cell research. I am not in his situation so I do not know all the details but from the information that is my decision. There are other treatments that might not actually cure Parkinson's but can manage it.

In my opinion, Tobias should participate in the study about stem cells. I think this because in order to find out if stem cells are really as bad as he thinks. Participating in this study could also help him in the long run. And, if he wants to get better, he doesn't have much of a choice. This research in stem cells could lead to help millions of people with all sorts of diseases so I think Tobias should take advantage of this opportunity.

In my view, Tobias should not participate in stem cell research. He was anti-stem research before. There are alternatives in helping find a cure of Parkinson’s disease. Tobias could always promote Parkinson’s disease awareness or help find a cure through another way.
But if I were Tobias, I think that personal gain would be more important to me. But stem cell research doesn’t guarantee a cure so I think I would stay my belief that embryonic cell research is wrong.

Mr. Johnson-
I'm sorry that this blog entry is late, but in my excitement for the day off I completely forgot that this was the real blog for the week, not the extra credit blog... I just realized now.

I think that Tobias' decision on whether or not to choose to participate in the study or not depends on how strongly he opposes stem cell research. He needs to take some time to contemplate over his ethics and consider how he might feel once he makes a decision. If he would feel greatly depressed or disloyal to his morals when he participated in stem cell research, it might not be worth the trouble. If he would feel that he was improving future and present lives of people with Parkinson's disease, then he might gain satisfactory from the research. He will also need to consider the time and effort that he will be spending during his participation. Nobody wants to regret a previous decision that could have been stopped to begin with. If Tobias researches more about stem cells, I think he will realize more clearly if he is willing to volunteer or not.

This link shows pros and cons of stem cell research that Tobias should take in account before he makes his final decision.

Sorry about the lateness, I was so distracted by the holidays!
Tobias should not participate in the clinical study which conflicts with his true values. Stem cell usage involving the destruction of healthy human embryos has long been a controversial topic. Tobias has actively sought to prevent of the very embryos that could now prolong, or depending on your opinion kill, a life.
No to Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Personally, I have no strong opinion on whether or not to approve, or disapprove, of stem cell research. I feel that I don’t posses enough conclusive, definitive knowledge, and I doubt anyone does, of when something transitions from a medical procedure to murder. At what stage does the process begin to end human life? Why is killing other organisms acceptable? Why shouldn’t embryos that would otherwise die be experimented on? These are some of the questions that I still have regarding this important topic. I would not be offended in anyone thought that this stance is just a clever way of disguising the fact that I try to avoid this topic, as it most likely is. Back to the original subject, although I do not feel comfortable stating this, I would participate on the study and most likely feel no remorse over the possibility of my own personal gain over what might very well be the life of another. (Weird post huh?, must be the lateness – cognitive functions are shutting down.) :)

good snowy saturday morning!

I think that Tobias should not participate in the study of Parkison's disease just because he recently got diagnosed with it. I think the should not participate because he opposed the idea of this disease, until he was diagnosed.

I think that Tobias should participate in the study. I know to some people it goes against there religious beliefs. but sometimes in life we have to go beyond our self for the better good of humanity. some people can die because of this disease and its up us to provide medicine. something good can always come out of something evil

I am not sure whether or not Tobias should participate in the study. It is quite a decision. If he has been against stem cell reseach in the past, then maybe he should stick to his beliefs and not participate. On the other hand, stem cell research possibly save his life, and if not, then help towards the cause of others diagnosed with Parkinsons. Surely, he would not want to libe with Parkinsons for the rest of his life. It is quite a personal decision. Here in a link about Parkinson's. Click Here
