I feel that the situation is completely unethical and wrong. First of all, she already has SIX kids!!! That is plenty for anyone, let alone with eight more infants on top of that. I think that she should not be allowed to keep all of the children because they would be treated much better if there were two or three to a household, not 14. The mother will also not be able to support that many children for very long unless she has an incredible income (which she probably can't because she is too busy taking care of her 14 kids.)

I would definitely place the blame with the fertility clinic- even if someone comes in with an idea to have eight more kids, they could have denied her the embryos for both her health and the health of the children, who will most likely suffer health problems from being born prematurely.

It was definitely unethical for the clinic to implant the embryos.

If I were Ms. Suleman's mother or father, I would encourage her to put at least some of the children up for adoption so that they can be better taken care of.

1.I think that she was wrong to seek medical help to have more children, and I can truly understand how she can have a serious mental-health problem.
2.I think that the doctor who implanted eight embryos into Suleman was wrong and should be the person to blame. He should not have done that with her conditions especially. She has 6 kids all ready, she can not afford more kids, and she is a single mother who is living with her parents.

This entire situation is absolutely ridiculous. If you have 6 children, claimed bankruptcy, and are still living at home with your parents, what in the world would make you want to to have EIGHT more kids. Adding up to a total of 14 kids, and 3 adults, in a 3 bedroom house. yeah, now that i even type that out, its even more ridiculous than i thought it was 2 minutes ago, ha.

I am torn between putting the blame on the fertillity clinc and ms. suleman. i hope thats allowed :P anyways, the feritllity clinc, should not of allowed itself to plant 8 embryos in such a young women, if it is entirely obvious that it is INCREDIBLY risky, and the chance of death or hurt is vey high. But, on the other side of the coin, the lady should not of even conjured up the idea in her head of having eight embryos planted inside of her. If i was Ms. Sulemans mother, i would of reacted with care, yet incrediby strongly to get my point across. i would of told her that this wasn't a good idea, and that she was in no financial or physical (having 6 kids already) condition to have eight more kids. I would have explained that the time wasn't right, right now, and that maybe when she was able to get a little more stable, she could think about having a FEW(2,3) more kids.

1. I feel this situation is absurd. Honestly, the woman is broke, clearly considering she lives with her parents and is 33. She does not have any additional income to support her already born six children. I feel it is unhealthy for not only the young woman's body having so many children, but for the children that are currently born. It is physically impossible to remain sane and have fourteen children.


2. The "blame" can go both ways. The clinic knew it was unsafe and could harm her body. On the other hand, the woman is to blame considering her "addiction" as you may, to have over a dozen children. In a small house, where she is not financially stable. Therfore, this could have been avoided if the clinic refused to inject such a high number of embryos within her uterus.


3. I do not think it is ethical only because, due to doctor patient confidentiality, the doctor should have known her on some note. He could have studied her body expressions, seen if she was depressed, stressed. And anything else to have possibly disrupted her pregnancy in any perpective. I think it is EXTREMELY dangerous, eight children is insane.

4. If I were the doctor i would have contacted the young womans family. I would have tried to obtain outside information before performing such a high risk. Planting eight embryo's is astronomical. Its crazy. Although there is a chance a majority will not develop, there still is that chance. After talking to the family and seeing their perspective on how she handles these children and how many she currently has. If she is stressed or any symptoms that can affect her physically. Then i would try and talk to her on a personal basis and try and convince her to reduce the amount of embryo's, and if they do not develop, further assistance will take place.

Upon reflecting on the entire situation of Ms. Suleman I felt a strong impulse of confusion and curiousity. I could not comprehend how and why a single mother of already six young children would feel it appropriate to hence concieve more children. The more and more I racked my brain for an answer, it dawned on me. Before Mr.Johnson ever said this in class, I wondered if maybe this women had a mental disorder or dissability. I know of cases where people have impulses to do abnormal things. In this case, her actions were both abnormal and irrational. I can understand the need and want to be a mother, but obviously this woman is in over her head. I sympathise what she is going through right now, and hope that the public is staying out of her business, because with a current total of fourteen children the last thing she needs is a camera or journalist following her wherever she goes.
In this situation, I would whole heartedly place blame on the doctor that implanted the eight embryos into this womans body. I feel it was his responsibility to make sure that this woman really needed this procedure performed on her. I feel that any basically educated person could see that this particular women was in a fine reproductive state.
Ethically speaking, the doctor and clinic should not have performed the implantation of the embryos. As I have previously stated, this woman obviously did not need assistance in concieving a child. I feel that procedure was un-neccessary. I now begin to wonder if there was an incentive in the deal, or a plus side for the doctor.
As Ms. Sulemans father before the request, I would tell her that she need not to become pregnant anymore. She was lucky and blessed enough to have six healthy children of her own and should be satisfied with that. I would say that pregnancy is a risky occurance that is life threatening, especially to a woman who becomes pregnant more and more. I wouldn't want her to worry about expenses, and would refuse to go along with her decision if she chose to get embryos via the clinic.

I feel that this entire situation is unfair and wrong, but at the same time good. As Mr. Johnson mentioned in class, Ms. Suleman was mentally ill or had some sort of obsession with giving birth. Taking this fact into consideration, I couldn't find the heart to think it was her fault. I also think that it was a good thing that this has happened. One, so that clinics similar to this one are warned to not do this, and two, so that there is hopefully not a repeat. Consider it as a learning experience.

As I said before, I cannot seem to blame Ms. Suleman because of her supposed mental condition. Therefore, the "blame" goes on the IVF clinic. I mean, who in their right mind would give in to a lady who comes to your clinic and asks for EIGHT babies? The staff should have had better judgement than to give her even more kids after the six she already has. Even if this lady wanted the kids, the doctors have the final word in the decision and are trusted to make the ethical or practical choice.

I think it was unethical of the clinic to do this. They should have considered the effects of this multiple birth on the mother and her family's financial postion. They also should have considerd Ms. Suleman's health before making this decision.

If I was Ms. Suleman's mother, I would have a mix of emotions after the birth. I would feel shock for the amount of kids born. Fear for what will happen to my very large family, especially the kids. Happiness for my daughter and my new grandchildren. Anger towards my daughter for what she will be doing to our family and her innocent kids. Confusion as to why she would do this when she knows that there isn't enough money. And lastly, annoyance at what the press and people are saying about my daughter without even really knowing her.

1. I think the whole thing is rediculous. Why would she do this, Why would her parents let her do this, and Why would the IVF doctor let her do this?
2. I would blame her because no matter how sick you are in the head its messed up. We shouldn't treat the crazy differently if they do something irresponsible. Now her family has to take care of them and support them because she likes the privalege of being pregnat.
3. It was not ethical for the IVF people to give her 8 embryos. Do they give babies out willy nilly or do they check these people out first. Obviously not if a single woman with 6 kids already with little or no form of income can get an embryo, let alone 8. I think this situation is ridiculous. When you already have six children I don't think you should get pregnant with eight more. Considering the fact that she has no husband, I feel terribly bad for these children because I don't understand how they could be living. Raising fourteen children alone would be extremely expensive and hard work especially if eight of them are the same age. Obviously, Ms. Suleman needs someone to love and wants a big family, but if you can't provide for that family it isn't the best thing to do. If I were to blame anyone I would blame Ms. Suleman for wanting such a big family and having no way to provide for them. I don't think it was ethical for the IVF clinic to implant all these embryos because it is really dangerous carrying eight children at one time. Therefore, she is a danger to herself and that is dangerous to her six already born children because if she dies, they have no way of surviving. The clinic should have done more research with her and her current life before implanting her with eight more embryos. If I was the IVF doctor, I wouldn't allow one of my patients to carry eight embryos at one time. I would tell them to start with two or three at the most, but eight is way too dangerous. I think that it is wrong for Ms. Suleman to have another eight kids when she isn’t financially stable and already has six other kids all under the age of 8. Mostly, I feel bad for the older siblings because suddenly, they have another eight siblings which will mean they will most likely spend less time with their mother and when they get older, they will probably have to take on a lot of responsibility for watching out for their many younger siblings.
If I were to place blame on someone, I would put it on the mother. It is the mother is responsible for what she does and in this case, she had IVF. She is the one who makes the decision and she is the primary caretaker of her children. She should know if her current situation enables her to take care of all her children properly.
It was not ethical for the IVF clinic to implant so many embryos. Although the mother has rights, the clinic should have limited the amount of embryos they would/could implant.
As the IVF doctor, I would say that it was Ms. Suleman’s right to choose the amount of embryos she wanted to have implanted. It amount of children she already has is not an issue or the clinic’s responsibility to know.

I think that this whole situation is horrible and a complet mess! I don't understand how the mother would even think that have 14 children is ethical. Especially since she is a single mother and not financially stable. Each child will not get the care and supoort that they deserve. I think that the mom is only thinking about herself and her needs rather than the welfare of her children.

If I were to put the blame on someone in this situation, it would definitely be the mother. She has made horrible decisions and is risking her and her babies’ lives. From the given information, I cannot tell if this woman is mentally unstable. However if this was the case, I might have looked at this dilemma in a different way.

It was not ethical to implant 8 embryos. Risking the lives of these potential babies is definitely worse than not meeting the wants (not needs) of the patient. The clinic should have made wiser decisions.

If I was the doctor, I would have not gone through with the implantation. I would carefully explain to the women the serious dangers of this, making sure not to offend her in any way. It is also very important to check her background information such as her income at her job. Also, if necessary, it would be a good idea to meet her 6 kids.

When it comes to a single woman having octuplets, I think that this should be illegal to scientific fertilization. First, she already has 6 children, which would make her have 14 children. Second, she is single and she does have a job to support her family. She lives with her mother and father.

The entire story is absurd. The problem is so unethical and disturbing that it leaves me baffled. Ms. Suleman is a woman obsessed with children due to a psychological problem. Strongly disagreeing with marriage, she decided to have children from in-vitro fertilization. Apparently her mother says that the IVF clinic implanted less than 8, but they multiplied. The complete story is chaotic!

Obviously both parties are at fault. It was unethical for the IVF clinic to implant many embryos, but it was mainly the mother’s fault. She is a single mother, 33 years old, and still lives with her parents. Also, Ms. Suleman takes care of her six children under the age of 7, and then wants more! It’s astonishing how this woman wants to have more kids when she can’t even take care of herself. Even with mental illness and etc., nobody tried to stop her. Her parents should have stepped in and told her to get her act straight. The IVF clinic, full of doctors and responsible professionals, should have checked the Ms. Suleman’s status before giving more embryos. Who in their rightful mind would give many embryos to a woman filing for bankruptcy? When the clinic found out that Ms. Suleman had eight fetuses, they should have persuaded Ms. Suleman to have abortion. So in the end, the ball was in her hands.
If I was the IVF doctor that implanted the embryos, I would put the blame on Ms. Suleman. I would say that she requested eight embryos, and that I was just doing the job. If I was part of the department, but not necessary the doctor that did the implantation, then I would be ashamed for hiring the doctor. But then again, I would be angry at Ms. Suleman for giving the organization a bad reputation. I would be humiliated for having Ms. Suleman as my daughter. I wouldn’t advise her to have children in the first place. When she was younger, I would send her to college, get her own house, and get a good job before she could start “fooling around”. I would help her if she got pregnant because she needs it, but after disobeying my commands and ignoring my advice at least 5 other times, I would kick her out.

I feel that this particular situation is extremely unethical in every way. A single mother with six children (and without a steady income) clearly cannot provide an adequate amount of care for her children, let alone having fourteen children. Having so many children with so little monetary means or support leads to an impoverished, unhappy childhood for the children. No child deserves to be neglected by their parent or burdened by the fact that they'll never be properly taken care of or shown their parent's full attention.
If I were to lay the blame on anyone, it would be both the mother and the fertility clinic. Even if Mrs. Suleman wanted to implant 7 embryos, which is wrong, the fertility clinic should not have any reason to agree with her. They are trained professionals in this field. They know the rules and the consequences of this type of procedure, so they are mostly to blame. It was not ethical to implant these embryos.
If I were the IVF doctor, I would never allow anyone to go through with this procedure. If I had studied this field of health, I would know the risks of this dangerous implant. I think I would know better than to go through with it. I would turn Ms. Suleman down in an instant.

I think the mother is being selfish. The children are not going to have adequit attention from their her. She probibly has some sort of mental disorder that will also stint the childrens devolopment. She and the childern are being supported by the grandparents who dont make enough to support the entire family. I think CPS should intervene if the mother shows she is unable to take care of the children because the children are still young and have a good chance of being adopted.

I would blame both the fertility clinic and the mother. i blame the fertility clinic for not doing a background check on the mother, not doing a psychiatric evaluation prior to insemination, and for implanting a dangerous amount of fertalized embryos into her. the mother should have realized that she could not support 8 more children.

if i was Ms. Sulemans mother and she told me she wanted to be fertilized with 8 embryos honestly, i probibly would have smacked her upside the head and said," Whats wrong with you!!! Your living off your father and I now and were struggling to make ends meet. What makes you think this is a good idea?" I think i would take her to the nearest orphanage and show her around and explain to her that this is where her children will end up because CPS will take them away. As ahrsh as it sounds it seems like that would be the only way to get through to this woman.

I think that having eight more children on top of six other children is CRAZY!! The eight new children are little babies! She is really young to have eight embryos implanted. She does not even have a job to pay for all of the costs of the fourteen children. She must be very busy with all the kids, even though her parents are helping out.

If I were to place the “blame”, I would blame the clinic. And yes, Ms. Suleman did want the embryos. But, the clinic approved this bizarre decision even though she is young. They did not have to grant her the embryos. They really should have thought that the fact that she already has six other kids to deal with is enough. The doctors in charge of the procedure really should have though it through scientifically and in a medical manner.

If I were Ms Suleman’s mother and I was told she wanted more kids, I would have mixed feelings. At first, I might be happy to have more grandchildren! Then I would consider all the work that will go in to caring for the babies. I would try to convince her that eight more kids is way overboard for everyone. And, if that fails I might have to support her as a mother. It is her decision and I can’t persuade it in another direction if she won’t let me.

It wouldn't even bother me if she was well off, married, and had a good job. However, she does not have the means to care for these children. I think there are many people to "blame" in this situation. The parents knew that she had a problem and should have helped her seek medical help. If they had helped her get help, she might not have gone to the clinic to have more children in the first place. The woman also deserves a big chunk of the blame. She should have thought it through, A LOT. If you can't support the children you already have, what in the world would convince you to go and more than double the size of your family. I mean, if she can't support them, some or all of the might be taken away anyway. Then the children that she seems to have an obsession with will be gone. And those poor children. It will be tough on them, living in such a large family that can't support them. The clinic also deserves some of the blame. If a woman who has six kids comes in and says she wants eight embryos, they should know better than to put her in that kind of situation. They are putting her life and the lives of the children in danger.

If I was the IVF doctor that Ms Suleman went to, I never would have implanted that many embryos. I would have told her that it put her life, and the lives of the eight children she wanted, in jeopardy. The children would be born premature and have many health risks. I would have tried to contact her family to inform them of her request.

I believe the entire situation is total insanity in a bad way. My outlook on this is totally negative, because she commited a very selfish act. Having 14 kids, no husband, and only her parents to support her, she obviously did not think this one through. Just as smoking is an addiction, her desire for babies is just the same, and its a problem. we can pretty much guess that taking care of these kids are nearly improbable for one parent with no suitable job for the scenario. She may think its all good now, but reality will come eventually and know she can't support them.

I put the entire blame on the mom. she needs to see that these babies are not accessories, they are living human beings.

I'm having my doubts on whether the IVF clinic even cared about the outcome of the procedure, they just did it. They should've known in their heads that this is stretching the limit too far.

If I was the IVF doctor, I would tell the lady straight up, you are not thinking this through enough. Then Ms. Suleman would just tell us about her "desire" to have kids. But, in the real world I would just have to go with what she says and not care since I would have little say over hers.

From the link I'm about to post, I read that she is requesting for $2 million dollars to help pay for the kids. That idea was a typical thing she would do. She finally came to the fact she can't raise them alone, but 2million will probably not be enough, so she might just keep asking. Not to be mean , but Ms. Suleman should get her priorities straightened out.

I think it is a very...strange situatuion. That is, in my opinion, just too many kids. As funny as "Cheaper by the Dozen" is, no one should really be living that way. Plus, if she doesn't need them, it's a waste of embryos. And when I say that she doesn't need them, I mean she has the ability to become pregnant, so she should just do it the old fashioned way.

I think that it was wrong for her to receive the eight embryos but at this point she should have all eight it was her decision so she shouldn’t kill the babies for it. I think the doctor is to blame because he should do background checks on patients like that and he should not have given the women eight embryos. It was completely unethical for the Doctor to implant the eight embryos. If I were the doctor I would have refused to implant eight embryos and offered to implant two or three.

When i read this, it totally blew my mind. I have always loved watching "John and Kate Plus 8" a show about a family or sextuplets. They have trouble with their sextuplets even while they have stable jobs and each other. Ms Suleman has no job, no husband, and has claimed bankrupcy. This whole situation is out of control. I think that she should have to give some of the children up, or put in foster care. I would definitely put the blame on if IVF clinic. They should not have planted some many embryos. It was definitely not ethical. If i were Ms Suleman's mother, i would strongly encourage her to put some of her children in a more stable person's hands until she got a job and some help.

well I think that the egg donors of this lady didn't use proper judgment i think they should have taken her situation in a account. I know its not entirely the companies fault since the lady herself didn't use proper judgement. the company could have not turned her down since she could have fill a compliant for discrimination. Back in the day when people had respect this would have not been ethical. Now with all the rights for having babies are all over the place ethic have disappear with some of society. i was surprised of the success rate of ivf in America according to the bar graph.

The situation is insane. This woman, who has had 6 children, and no visible means of supporting them is pretty bad in itself. Then having 8 more is ridiculous. even if she is too live of her parents; unless they are incredibly wealthy, i doubt they have enough money to support a family of 17.
I feel the blame for this goes to ms Sulemen AND the clinic . It was irresponsible for her to even consider adding on to her already large family of which she has no visible means to support; let along 8 more children. I would blame the clinic because they didnt think of the future of these babies in the slightest. Implanting 8 embroyos was completely unethical. The sheer number of embryos implanted would probably cause the probabliltity of a premature birth and other problems that could emerge as an effect to skyrocket. From the children's perspective; there is a chance they may be seperated. 14 kids and a mother with no income isnt a good combination under ANY scenario. Another thing the doctors should have thought about is the welfare of her 6 existing childern. If the implanting of 8 embroyos inside her could have killed her during delivery. This would cause 6 childern to be motherless. It is beyond my comprehension how they approved this.
If i was a parent of Ms. Suleman, i would offer help and support. I would make sure that she sees the mistake that she made. I would also encourage her to write books, go on television and do other promotions that could give her some financial stability. I would not ask her to give up her children.

1. I do not think the situation is right. If someone wanted to have so many kids then she could have adopted. There are plenty of kids who need a home in the world. The women does not even have enough money to support them. Although she will get paid alot of money to talk to the press.
2. I would place the blame on the clinic. They should have looked further into her background before implanting the embryos in her.
3. I do not think it was ethical to implant 8 embryos in the women.

1. I feel that Ms. Suleman was irresponsible in her actions to undergo a procedure with such a dangerous number of embryos. I also feel that she was irresponsible in her decision to have more children than she is capable of providing care for. However, I do not feel that the children should be taken away as they belong to Ms. Suleman and certainly not to a government agency.
2. I feel that the blame should be placed equally on both Ms. Suleman and the fertility clinic for the reasons stated in answer 1. The blame lies not in one sole group as both are partly responsible for the undesirable circumstances that Ms. Suleman finds herself in today.
3. I believe that it was not ethical for the IVF clinic to implant 8 embryos. The chance that all 8 embryos would develop would put Ms. Suleman’s life at danger as well as those of her children.
4. AS the IVF doctor, I would have told Ms. Suleman that the procedure was not suited for her. The fact that she is fertile coupled with the high number of existing children that she possesses would cause me to urge her not to go through with the procedure. If I felt the need, I would even decline my services to her feeling that they would not be in her best interest.
