This is a very difficult decision because in my opinion no one deserves to die. There are reasons to save each and every one of their lives but my choice is the 7 year old child who still has his entire life to live and is going to take care of the organ given to him the best. To save the athlete who is HIV positive would be great but a poor choice because the child would use the organ longer as the athlete has only a few more years to live struggling with HIV. Also, because of the medications he is on for HIV its hard to tell how his body is going to react to the kidney; it may even reject it. The alcoholic was my second choice to save because he has 3 young children that he needs to take care of however, he is a recovering alcoholic meaning it could got either way. Also, it is going to be hard to know if the organ is going to be able to deal with the alcohol already in his body and most likely affecting his other organs. He would need to give up alcohol all together in order to keep his life and maintain his kidney. My third choice would have been the 73 year old women because although she would probably only use the kidney for a few more years as her life is nearing an end those years could have made a big difference in millions of peoples lives if she had cured cancer. So to save one life they would have saved millions. I choose the child because he has an entire life to live, would put the organ to best use, and could grow up to do something that was worth saving.

This site is not so much agreeing with me as it is informing those of what transplants are, who gets them, what can be donated, etc. However it does explain how they feel it is unfair of the way that 17 people die waiting for organs when put on the waiting lists.
 

Wow, this was a really hard choice to make. Truthfully, I would like to save them all. But since I can't, I decided that the 74 year old women is the person I would save. I realize that she probably doesn't have that many years to live anyway, but what really set my choice in stone was the fact that she was on the verge of curing cancer. I think that if saving her life could lead to the cure for cancer, it would in turn save the lives of thousands, if not millions of people. I would feel awful if the child were to die, because she didn't even get to live her life, and I would have had the power to let her. I also would feel bad if I had the recovering alcoholic die, because his children would maybe have to go into foster care, and that would be terrible. I'm sorry to say that the famous athlete would have been my last choice for saving. It's not that I want him to die, it's just that he didn't have so much ahead of his life like the child, or something to contribute to society(besides entertainment) like the old woman, or had children to take care of like the alcoholic. He still had a shortened lifetime because of his medical probems with HIV and might not have had all that long to live anyway. Each of these situations are sad, but for each story here, there are millions just like them. And if the 74 year old women DID use the rest of her lifetime to cure cancer, just think about all those horrible situations that could be avoided with the cure.

I can think of many reason why each person should recieve the transplant. But in my opinion,I would choose to save the 7 year old child. Although my second choice would be the the 74 year old women because she might have found the cure for cancer. The main reason why I choose the 7 year old was because he is so young and inexpierenced. I feel that he should have a chance to really expierence everything life has to offer. Also, I think the organ will be most sutiable for him becuase he is young and healthly. When he grows up he may change the world for the better. He has so much potiential and should be given the opportunity to devlop his talents. I decided against the athlete who is HIV positive becuase he is already stuggling with HIV, while the child is healthy and could get more use out of the organ. Although i would have liked to have saved the alcholic with three young children, but he is very unhealthy already in which case his body may reject the kidney anyways. I think each person deserves to continue living but the child rightfully deserves the kidney for various reasons.

Since there is no line order(unknown), I would give the kidney to the 7-year old. This child is innocent, as far as I know, and has not even had a taste of life and freedom yet. His/her body would probably accept the kidney most graciously. He/she would put the kidney to use for as long as they live. I don't think that there truly is a right choice. There are pros and cons for each of the characters. Honestly, the athlete and alcoholic screwed up and just got double wammied when they also has kidney failure. So, it was mostly between the scientist and the little boy/girl. I thought that the scientist may never discover the cure for cancer since he/she is already 74. Maybe others could find the cure using her studies and notes.

I feel that this is a hard decision to make for anyone. I agree that no one deserves to die but in this case someone has to. I want to choose the 74-year old women but she is practically on her death bed and her fellow scientists can take her work and do further research on her work after she passes away. I didn't choose the athlete because he is gonna die from HIV and AIDS so there's a kidney gone to waste. I'm stuck between the father and the 7-year old girl because they both have something to live for (not that the others don't). The father for his family and the girl for a life to live. I choose the girl but I do have doubts about if she is going to grow up to a good life instead of a bad one. For example the little girl could grow up to be an alcoholic like the father or a junkie and the kidney could fail. I chose the girl but I still have my doubts.
This site explains what doctors consider before they pick the person for the transplant. They considder age, who asked for the transplant first, who has more to offer, for example if they are going to find the cure for cancer, and money wise. Who is willing to pay more. They aslo look at the medical background of a person. (Whos sugery will be the easiest to do, whos surgery could get them on a wanted list, or a list of great doctors that people want to get treated by, etc.) This site believes that buying and selling organs should be legal. I think that if a person really wants to do something good for someone else that they would donate an organ for no fee then more power to them but if the person was desperately in need of money that if they are willing to sell an organ, then I'm all for it.
 

I believe that the Old women who can almost cure cancer should recieve the kidney. I believe she should get the kidney because she is so close to finding the cure for cancer. She would save a lot of people in the world who have cancer. Also I picked her because I don't think anyone else would have benefited from this kidney transplant anyways. The old women should be able to live the rest of her life and just because shes in her 70's doesn't mean she is gonna die anytime soon, I mean my great grandma lived up to 114. She is the only one out of the recipients that have a good purpose in life. I don't think the single father should recieve it because first of all he was an alchoholic and chances are he might turn back. Also if he got the kidney, it wouldn't really work because the kidney would react with the alchohol and he could of died anyways.

Choosing the person to receive the kidney is a hard choice. I can see reasons for all the candidates to receive it but some have more negatives then positives. Considering that the necessity of the kidney isn’t listed I think the little girl should receive the kidney. She has no other known health conditions so other medicines and such wont affect the new kidney. The little girl hasn’t really lived yet only being seven years old. She has her whole life ahead of her and could hopefully do something amazing with it. The little girl is young and could easily recover from the surgery because of her young age. The girl may not have done much yet in her life a lot of the time after a surgery like that a person is renewed and makes the best out of their life because they see how easily you can lose it. The girl is so young she can do amazing things with her life.

I was back and forth between the little girl and the scientist. The scientist is old but honestly she could live for maybe twenty more years. The scientist may be on the verge of discovering a cure for cancer but I bet she has countless other scientists working with her that could easily pick up on her work where she left off. It was easier to rule out the forty year old man because of the fact that he is a recovering alcoholic. He may be very wealthy and a single parent of three but the surgery could easily send him back into the darkness of alcoholism. The alcohol will greatly affect the kidney too. The athlete was also easier to rule out. He may be a famous athlete but he also is HIV positive. The drugs he is taking for HIV could easily and drastically affect the new kidney causing it fail of worse him die anyway. This decision was very hard and I think the state of the patients would help drastically. I can see why doctors use that as who receives the kidney.

Choosing only one person out of four is a very dificult decision. I would have to choose the 74 year old scientist. I would give the kidney to her because she may save millions of people with the disease of cancer. Even though she is on the verge of death herself, she would save others, or could find the cure to some other disease that is common all throughout the world. I did not chose the recovery alcoholic because all of the alocohol in his body may reject the new kidney, or make the new kidney fail. Though he has to take care of his three children, they can be given to close relative in a better condition.

Religion and Ethics Newsweekly had a talk show about transplants. Todd Krampitz needed a kidney so he advertised for one. The article consists of different people sharing their points of view on this subject. They say it transplant is ethical but is it fair. Transplants are extremely expensive and only the wealthy can afford them. Transplant is ethical but expensive, dangerous, and sometimes long awaited.
 

There are many things to consider when chosing a recipient for a kidney transplant. Each one of their lives matter and should be treated equally. I think that the child is most deserving of the kidney. They have their whole lives ahead of them. Also they might dedicate their lives to finding an alternative to a kidney transplant. It might help the thounsands of people who die while on the kidney transplant list. The child also doesn't have any medical problems, which helps ensure that the procedure will have a long lasting effect. The child did not have any problems that could cause their liver to just suddenly fail.
I wouldn't of chose the alcoholic for a couple of reasons. First, the man may have caused his kidney to fail due to his alcoholism. He may become an alcoholic later on during his life, so his kidney would go to waste. The only reason that I may have been inclined to chose him is because he is the father of 3 children. He also has no prior medical problems.
I would not have chose the famous athlete. I would not have chose him because he is HIV positive and might die soon, wasting the kidney. One reason I may have chose him is because he might be able to persuade some people to donate kidneys, so that some people may not die while on the kidney transplant list.

ABC news maintains this site. It states that people who have medical insurance are more inclined to get an organ transplant before people who don't own insurance. Also people who are the most sick are located on the top of the organ transplant lists.
 

To be honest, this was only mildly difficult once I actually thought about it. I narrowed it down based on a series of statistics. Do any of the patients have any serious medical issues? The athlete, although famous and probably wealthy, has HIV. Any medication he may be taking could cause his body to reject the kidney. Even if his body doesn't reject the kidney, he has, at most, twenty to thirty years to live. Do any of the patients have any minor medical issues that could become major issues? Alcoholism is a disease. It lasts for your entire life. You can "quell"it(nice word, huh, sounds like I'm talking about a rebellion) but the slightest drink could bring it back. If you were to become an alcoholic again you could mess up your kidney and it would have just been a waste. This left me with a tough decision. The little girl would live the longest and has the most opportunity, but this may not be a good thing. The old woman could cure cancer, but there is no guarantee. I chose the little girl, because, although the old woman could cure cancer, if she was smart, she would have a protege, a partner, or at least some notes (I know that I'm assuming, but this is just obvious). The little girl has the most opportunity and I'm sure that being saved from certain death at such an early age would inspire her to make good choices.

Deciding on which person deserves the kidney is very difficult. It's difficult because one you don't know what the future holds for each of the victims and you obviously don't know whos body will or will not react well to the transplant. I decided to choose the seven year old girl. i decided to choose her because i feel that there is a great possibility she's going to live longer. even though she may grow up and become a totally bad person she can also become the next president of the United States. You just really don't know. I also picked her because i feel her parents would be devastated if anything went down fall for her.
I would of picked the athlete because like what Erin said in class being that he is famous, it could get a lot of people to realize like wow I want to help people out like him. I would of wanted to save the recovering alcoholic only because he has three kids. I feel that though if he lived longer he could at any given time become an alcoholic again. With the doctor, i didn't pick her because even though she's on the verge of finding a cure for cancer she's getting older and she could pass away before she even finds the cure. Maybe the seven year old girl could spend her time finding the cure for it.

This site does not so much agree with transplants because of the mistake made by the doctor in the girls story. The doctor ended up transplanting an organ with a different blood type then that of the girl receiving the transplant.
 

Everyone of those people deserve to get the transplant for many reasons, but if I were to make this difficult decision I would probably give the transplant to the seven year old child. I would get the child the transplant because she/he has their whole life a head of them. He/she could grow up to be exactly like the other candidates for the transplant. The child could fun the cure for cancer, become an athlete, or could become an alcoholic, but would not know if the child were to grow up and become one of these things if she/he were not to get the transplant. Plus we already know what the other adults have become and make of themselves.
I would probably not give the kidney to the alcoholic because you do not know if he is going to relapse and permanently damage the kidney so he would need another transplant. He could of also of damage another vital organ, like his liver, with all of his alcohol consumption so he could die even with the transplant.

Honestly it is really a hard decision to choose 1 person because all of the people are important. I think the little girl should have the kidney though because she still has her whole life ahead of her. Everybody else is a grown adult who has already seen the world. Even for the sports player hes only 28. But wouldn't you rather die a famous athlete of age 28 rather than a little girl of age 7? The guy is almost 30 and you can see and do a lot in 30 years. You have to give a child a chance to grown up and experience the world. Even though the scientist is on the verge of curing hundreds of millions of people with cancer and they alcoholic is a wealthy man with a family shes 74, and hes 40. Her life is pretty much over, and he has alcohol problems...

This is a very hard decision but, i have to go with the 7 year old child. The child has perfect health so, the kidney should adapt to the child very well. I picked the child because it still has the rest of its life left to live, and needs to see and experience the rest of his life. he also may change the world or take the doctors studies and perfect them to get the cure for cancer. My second choice is the doctor because she is on the verge of finding the cure for cancer which is huge. But she is 74 and the kidney may not work as well. she also may die before she finished she work. The alcoholic has a good story about his 3 children and still recovering, he can go back to being a alcoholic. Also the kidney could fail again because of all the alcohol still in his blood. I definitely would choose the boxer because he has HIV. HIV will kill him anyway.

This was a really hard choice and i am with mary, i think that everyone one these people has at least one good reason why they sould recive the transplant.
I do have to say that if i could save one of the people it would have to be the 7 year old child. This is not just because she is a child and i would feel guilty for not giving her the transplant, but it is because if this little girl got the kidney and knew how lucky she was, she could grow up and become someone to save thousands of lives. Althought thatis a great posibility it could go the other way and she could do absolutly nothing with her life.
I think that is why this decision was so hard, because there is no way that you would ever be able to tell what happens to the person who recives the kidney after the transplant. For all you know it could be a week after they get the kidney and they could get hit by a bus.
Despite all the things that could posibly happen, i would still choose the little girl. I think that her body is most capable of handling the transplant, and react positivly to it. I also think that she has the best chance to persue something very helpful to society.

This was a hard decision. All of the candidates had legitimate reasons to recieve the kidney. I think that the 74 year old woman should get the kidney. She is on the verge of discovering the cure for cancer! That could save millions of lives all over the world. She really isn't that old either. My great-grandmother died when she was 94 so the woman could still have awhile to go. The child would've been my second choice because she had her whole life in front of her, but no one knew if she would contibute to something worthwhile. She might turn out to be some sort of drug addict. The athlete would also be nice to save but he is HIV positive, he might die a lot sooner than the 74 year old woman. The alcoholic would be my last choice, he might become an alcoholic again and ruin the kidney. Even though he has 3 children he could take a turn for the worst. The woman would be able to live long enough with the kidney to either find the cure for cancer or advance the research enough so that it makes it easier to find the cure.

This is a really hard decision to make, to choose 3 people that you don't know to die and only one to live. I would ultimately choose the little girl because she would be able to get the most use out of the kidney and she has no other prevailing health problems that would increase the risk of her body rejecting the organs. I would not choose the famous athlete because of the concern that he is HIV positive which will lead to a premature death and other health conditions including possible rejection of the organ. I would not choose the middle-aged single parent beacuse he may have other complications later on in life because of his alcoholic past and he is the most likely to abuse his renewed health and become addicted to alcohol again. I would not choose the 74 year old scientist, although she would be my second choice, because she has lived a long time and will probably not live more than another ten years or so. She would not get too much use out of the kidney. But in this hypothetically situation, I'm sure her work has been docomented and someone else could develop the cure for cancer if she were to die. All of these patients are worth saving and they all, if saved, would be grateful yet some would better the world with their new lease on life while others would not. We don't know how their lives will turn out. But, like I said I ultimately feel the little girl has the greatest potential to put the kidney to the best use compared to the other patients.

This site created by Dr. David L. Perry gives some options and some examples of the questions doctors think about when analyzing who should receive a transplant. Dr. Perry definitely believes in transplants at "all cost" and feels that we should put an emphasis on informing people about exercising, eating healthier, and avoiding smoking and drinking so that the need for organ transplants can be reduced. Also, he mentions other options such as xenotranplantation, synthetic organs, and organs from anencephalic infants instead of only living donations so that more peoples' needs can be met. The site also mentions the high discretion about who should receive the minimal number of donated organs and what doctors looks at when deciding. Lastly, the site also states the debates over what disqualifies a person from a transplant including mental illness/retardation, acohol and drug abuse, and cancer patients.

These kind of decisions are extremely difficult and life-changing for many. I support the ideas in this site that people need to be more conscientious about what they are putting in their bodies and overall making better choices about their health. Those who are just hit with a stoke of bad luck should be the ones to receive the donated organs first before those who have neglected their health. Also, I feel that there still needs to be a lot of reform in the transplant field of practice and there needs to be other affordable options developed because obviously this system is not working as well as it should.
 

I believe that the 7 year girl should get the availible kidney for transplant. She has no history of medical problems therefore she is in good health and chances are that her body won't reject the kidney. Also since she is a young child she still has a long life ahead of her. She has never had the chance to experience high schoool and college. She has never had the opportunity to experince countries and cultures from around the world. Basically all of the other candidates have had these opportunities allowed to them at one point or another in their lives and I believe that every person should be allowed these opportunities at one point in their lives. I want the girl to experience these opportunies and live her life to the fullest.. I would not choose the professional atlete with HIV becasue there is not yetr a cure for this disease. He only has a few months maybe years ahead of him at the most and I want the kidney to be given to someone who will be able to live the most amount of time as a reslut of the transplant.

To be the reason why someone lives or dies is really never a position i should hope to be in. Given the situation, each cadidate hs a viable reason for recieving the kidney. Personally, I believe the seven-year-old girl should in fact recieve it. Although she has no real extraordinary reason to live over the others, she could probably get the most effective use out of it. Considering the facts: she, hopefully, has the longest amount of life to use the kidney left in her, she has no other obstacles to suggest that the translplant would fail or be in-effective, and she, if she lives, she could go on to achieve something great, we just don't know. Although it makes a lot of sense to give it to the scientist on the verge of the cure for cancer, there is no guarantee that she has it, and she doesn't have much time left to live any way. Not to mention, he research could be passed down to a younger, more apt and healthy scientist. While the single father has a decent amount of money so as to pay for it or bribe the family for it, the kidney isn't the best choie for him either. it can be argued that it is needed to keep him alive for his children's sake, yes, but who's to say he won't have an alcoholic relapse thus putting his children in danger and, subsequently, causing the body to reject the kidney or have it fail again. The famous athlete could be a good campaign to encourage kidney donations if it were given to him, but if he already has a fatal disease regardless, would it not make more sense to not waste the kidney? It shows just how many people are statistically on a waiting list, the risks, patient info., as well as many other apects of the whole transplantation ordeal. Ultimately, a lot goes into choosing an appropriate recipient for an organ, and I wouldn't wish the difficulties on anyone !
 

Every one of these people should have the chance to live their lives. But in this condition if I were to choose a recipient, then it'd have to be the 74 year old scientist. The old woman may be old and will die eventually, but she should live. Besides why would someone want to let her die, she's on the verge of finding the cure for cancer. If the old lady got the kidney transplant, and did find the cure, then she'd be saving millions or even billions of people's lives. This would affect and impact the world tremendously. The athlete wouldn't have my vote and I wouldn't choose him. He would actually be my last choice. Besides the athlete just needing a kidney transplant he also has HIV which would make him die even more quickly. If my choice was between the scientist and the athlete then my choice would definitely be the scientist.

I think this is a very hard decision to make and if these charachters were not made up i would be in a serious dilema. I concluded though that the 7 year old should recieve the kidney. The 74 year old woman has less time to live and even though she is on the verge of finding the cure for cancer there is always someone who can continue her resaerch. The athlete is hiv positive so there is no telling how his body will react to the kidney . The Recovering alchoholic does have three children to raise but there is the chance of a relapse if he should get the kidney. I also have remorse for the child. the scientist is most likely known by other scientists, so she can get an organ because she is more famous. the child, however, is not know by anyone, but her parents. She is less likely to get an organ from anyone else.
overall, i think the child deserves the organ more than the father and athlete because the athlete had a chance not to get HIV, and the father became a drunk, although he did not have to. The child has done nothing wrong and she should not be punished by not getting an organ.

It is rather tough making this decision as I believe that no one deserves to die. But since there is only one, I chose the woman scientist. She is 74, but she has almost discovered the cure for cancer. If saving her will result in finding a cure for cancer,It will help thousands all over the world. It would in fact save many lives. So by saving her, it is in fact saving half the world. I did not choose the alcoholic even though he had three kids to raise as his alcohol problem itself will have shortened his lifetime. His body might even reject the kidney. However, as he is very wealthy, his kids can live without him as there is no other choice.

I would chose the seven-year-old girl. The reason that i chose her is because the scientist can roll over dead the next morning. The alcoholic could go into relapse and destroy the new kidney. Finally the famous athlete could die from HIV the next day and not do a a lot for society. The child could make people understand that transplants save lives and they will save more.

This is an extremely difficult decision. There is at least 1 reason for everyone to be saved and no one deserves to die. My choice was the 7 year old child. Since she is only 7 she hasn't been able to experience life. It would be unfair to take that away from her. She will not waste the kidney since besides the kidney failure she is in perfect health. My second choice is the 74 woman. She was on the verge of finding a cure for cancer which would save many lives. She is also very old and could ultimately die any day. My third choice is the 40 year old man. He is a single parent of 3 children who he has to take care of but, he is a recovering alcoholic which means he could relapse and damage the kidney.

Deciding who receives a kidney transplant is very difficult. None of the recipients deserve to die, and they all sound like they have good reasons to receive a kidney. However I think the 73 year old scientist should receive the opperation. If someone is about to find the cure for cancer, then their life is definitely worth saving. Even though she is approaching the end of her years, saving her life may mean saving millions of cancer victims. I wanted also to choose the 7 year old girl with no other medical conditions because she still has en entire life to live. She may turn out to have great contributions to society, however, she may turn out to be a drug abuser or a criminal, which is why this is a very hard decision to be made. It must be difficult for the people who often make these decisions in America. I didn't choose the male athlete because even though he is famous he is already going to die from HIV, and the kidney may fail in his body anyway because of the HIV cells. I didn't choose the recovering alcoholic because he is unmarried and his children can be sent to foster homes or other families. However, it would still be a tragic loss.
