The genetically modified egg plant is a huge achievement in the food industry. But of course this stirred up many controversies, whether its is safe and ethical. The Indian seed company produced an eggplant that will significantly reduce the amount of pesticides, and should be less expensive to manufacture. While modified egg plant could be very helpful to food companies, the genetically modified rice may not. The GM rice has many serious and potentially harmful affects on people. The GM rice could cause an allergic reaction and the uncertainty gene transfer are two reasons why GM rice is said to be hazardous. Other uncertainties about the GM food includes what chain reactions it will impact the life on earth and the food chain. I feel that genetically modified food could be useful in the near future. But, I think people should be careful due to safety reasons. I think more experiments should be done before they allow manufactures to sell genetically modified food to the public. I do not this practice is very ethical because it could initially kill people . I think scientist should continue to research other possible ways to genetically modified food that is less hazardous. I think these foods should not be accessible to the public until there is further investigation on the effects of this kind of food.

The Pros and Cons of genetically modified foods
 
These articles deal with an innovative way to try to enhance agricultural food products so that they may better deal with problems effecting food output. In India, a genetically altered eggplant was produced to counter the effects of caterpillars on the crop in essence to increase output of unharmed eggplant and return with a greater profit. This innovation is controversial because of its failure to be fully tested which has led to suspicions concerning the consumption of these eggplants since they have some harmful effect on the caterpillar. As well there is some dispute over GM rice and the suspicion of its effects on humans when it is killing other pests and how the genetically altered rice may effect other natural rice plants.
My feeling is why do people have to mess with nature? Why do people have to come up with artificial solutions to a strictly natural problem? I am against the use of pesticides because they really do not help the fruit or the consumer and having a crop that automatically repels a pest is not the answer either unless it has been tested to be fully safe. But these crops have not and they could be producing worse side effects than eating a caterpillar in your fruit. I definitely feel that if these plants are introduced into an environment with natural plants they may cause major changes in or may become dominant over the other species'. This is not an ethical way of solving the problems of pests and ultimately should not be continued unless it can be shown that the fruits produced are completely safe and do not have any (and I mean any) side effects on the consumer, After all, fruits and vegetables are supposed to be strictly natural, not processed but healthy for you, right?
Harmful Effects of Genetically Modified Foods

Genetic modifying the eggplant will help with the problem at hand. But, with the pests gone and not eating the plants it will cause at least some problems in the long run for the health of the people eating it. I personally don't like eggplant but the people who do have the right to know if their food has been genetically changed for the growers benefit. genetic modification to rice is the some in my view. The changing of a natural thing can change the nutrition of the plant its self. Finally there is a reason for the plants to be that way so leave it be. I think the genetic modification is a terrible idea to even think about. The plants grow the natural way. I think that is the way it should stay. When you change the plants genetically the fruit of that plant will change, too. Yes it is helpful to the grower. But, who is paying the real price.
 
Genetically modified eggplants and rice have proven detrimental to the hordes of pests that plague our crop yields, while gradually increasing the carrying capacity of the oversized, crowded human populations. These genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, raise many questions yet to be resolved. With the reduction of "pests", what kind of impacts should we expect on ecological systems both narrow and wide? How will the consumption of these GMOs affect us in the short-term and the long run? To what extent can we engineer our crops without violating natural laws? We must squelch these questions with extreme rapidity before we can advance any further into such research; otherwise, apocalypse awaits us all.
 
article #1- Eggplants are being genetically altered to be in better shape/quality for the customer. They altered it so when catipillars took a bite of the veggie they would die. The company selling these insist that their product can not harm the consumers. However, only few tests have been done and their records from thepast are not so reliable

article #2- Rice is being altered and is causing much harm on the people and environment surrounding it. Tests from lab miceshowed their immune systems were altered after eating the food. Also, planting these crops is lacking in diversity bringing out one specific chemical inside the soil/earth.

I don't think that genetially altering foods is a good reliability. If there are real problems with the food and we have already eaten surplus amounts of it, without testing, what now? It really is not preferable from convinienceto harmful effects. Scientists should not be doing this unless it's absolutely necessary, to surivive that is. I do not think it's ethical because it's disruption/corrupting what has been given to us. Also, it's deadly and harmful effects on us and the Earth.

Little caterpillars are causing big problems for Indian eggplant farmers. Since the consumers won't buy a worm-eaten brinjal, it is causing them a lot of problems. They're trying to solve the problem with pesticides that farmers must spray dozens of times each growing season to keep the fruit and vegetables. A company called Mahyco has developed an eggplant that it says will reduce the amount of pesticides eggplant farmers will need to spray. Mahyco's genetically modified eggplant produces a protein called Bt, which kills the caterpillar. Bt is found naturally in a soil bacterium and has been used for decades as an organic insecticide.

Genetically modified rice may potentially cause serious public health and environmental problems, experts warn. Genetic modification allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another, and also between non-related species, to create advantages, experts say. Such methods are used to create genetically modified plants, which are then used to grow genetically modified food crops. The GM rice are their tendencies to provoke allergic reactions and the uncertainty of gene transfers. In 2008, the immune systems of laboratory mice that consumed genetically modified corn were found to be abnormal. Other uncertainties about GM food includes what chain reactions it will impact the life on earth and the food chain.

I feel that the genetic modifications will be more useful in the future than now. In the future, we could research more to make this a safer resource. People should be careful with what they eat. The answers to help could be found but the safest way is always better. Although this is a healthier way to protect the produce than pesticides, it could still be made safer.
Scientists should preform more tests on the foods and do more research. They could also come up with better was to go about this problem.
I don't feel that this an ethical way because it is causing sicknesses that harm others.
It's enough when the plants are being changed from it's original state.
What's Wrong with Genetic Modification? Many Things Are

This makes the growers use harmful pesticides to try to mend the problem of the caterpillars. The genetically modified plants, ideally, will reduce the use of pesticides. Article 2:
Genetically engineered rice plants have also been controversial. Many people are not comfortable with the fact that genetic engineering could create long term problems. It was mentioned that mice who have eaten these foods have had abnormal immune systems. The issues of biodiversity come into play as well. All health problems have not been resolved when it comes to these genetically engineered foods.

I think that the practice of modifying these genes by crossbreeding plants has a significant amount of health risks. I don't think it is wise to put the health of millions of Americans at risk by genetically engineering these products. I feel that studies of this process, whether it turns out to be harmful or beneficial, is a huge step for people. If the results to studies of tests are conclusive, we could potentially create ways to make life better for humans, that is within reason. I believe that eventually it could be possible to eliminate genetic diseases like diabetes or genetic heart problems. I don't know how this would effect those who are not looking to better the common people. I don't think it is ethical to genetically alter humans to have "personal armies." In conclusion, I think that genetic engineering must be studied further.

The eggplants were getting eaten by caterpillars, so the scientists made a built in pesticide for the plant. They believe this will keep the caterpillars away, so they will be able to sell them. They do believe it is safe to eat the eggplant even though it does have pesticides in it.

Article # 2
The genetically modified rice is causing more health risks. In the lab rats, it caused their immune systems to change. This modified rice has also cause a chemical reaction in the soil in which it was grown.

I feel that this can be good in a way that it helps people but it can also be bad that it harms people and the environment. It can be could because it helps farmers grow more crops. It can also be good because it can make the prices for food lower with a greater surplus the food will cost less. This can also be bad because when they combine food, some people might have an allergy to the things they combine with the original food or crop. This can also be bad for people or the environment because in some cases like the rice, it cause a bad chemical reaction in the soil.

I really do not know what to think it scientists should be able to do this because it can be good and cause harm.

This can in a way be both ethical and unethical.

I do not think it is enough until they further the study and make it so it will not harm anyone.

The procedure of genetically modifying is approved and disaproved by many people. It can save crops, but people think it won't help them save their lives. It can also create a new market for different types of food, yielding more net gain for big agricultural companies, like Monsanto.
As described in Article 1, India's population and Agricultural Department has major controversies on whether it is right to modify plants with a new pesticide to keep away catapillars from eating their crops. Eggplant, known in India as brinjal, is a highly used vegetable in most Indian dishes. Farmers spray their crops with pesticide dozens of times a season, just to keep the catapillars off. The catapillars eat the stems of the crops, making the growth of the plant stop and decresases the amount of crops produced inside of one season. The workers at Mahyco developed a new type of eggplant with a special protein, Bt, inside. Bt is a protein that kills the catapillar as soon as it ingests it. It is effective, natural, and has been used for decades for killing these catapillars. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research says that this protein is completely safe and says that Bt Eggplant and Non-Bt Eggplant are the same. But other individuals like Pushpa Bhargava, a pioneer of biotechnology in India, says that "...it is a disaster." He recommended more testing to be done to the crop with the protein in it before it is released over the billions of people in India.
Article 2 is more con-genetically modifying plants and crops. There are 2 major issues that provoke the release of genetically modified crops to a population. They are the inability to provoke allergic reactions and the uncertainty of gene transfer. These are both feisable points to be shared with the population before it is released. It is proven, on lab-rats, that consuming GM rice has shown abnormal immune systems. People wonder if this could happen to rats, couldn't it happen to humans?
There are many things to consider when debating the process of genetically modifying food. First is the safety of the people consuming it. Some companies would just introduce a new plant for the sole purpose of making a profit. Other companies would recommend not trying the food until all the tests are solved completely. Next you have to consider getting allergic reactions from the GM crops because if you allergic to one specific trait of a plant then it may cause serious problems. Lastly is its long term affect. The plant's side affects could not be apparent immediately, but could rapidly develop over time, sometimes even causing early stages of cancer. I think it is good that scientists are finding new ways to help plants grow and it is also interesting how it is done. I think it is ethical, as long as it is tested repeatedly until there are no problems. I think that there is a limit to genetically modifying plants. I believe it is to stop when there are more genetically modified crops then there are pure bred because it changes the natural structure and order of the Earth. Many people are supporting GM crops

The artical of India is about the eggplant. The eggplant is the most popular vegetable of India. This article also talks about pesticide and how they have a new seed to lower the pesticides in the eggplant.

The other article talks about how modified foods can cause public health and hurt the environment.They ask if the substance is killing pests, will it hurt us? They say how it can have long term affects on us.

I don't like this idea. I do feel that things should be made naturally made the way they would normally be made. I don't understand why you would want to change natural environmental things. I hate this idea and it bothers me that they are warning people that this is hurting our environment and even our health and people continue to keep doing this.I would never part take in this.

No i don't believe the scientists should be doing this at all. I especially don't think that they should if they are aware of the affects on our environment and our health. I don't find this ethical at all. I believe that at this point they should stop doing this because it's not helping our environment especailly with global warming going on.

i don't like the idea of genetically altering foods and they may not me safe. If there can been problems with the food before, then why are we worried all of a sudden? Also it may be mad for you, then why are we doing it? I do not think it is ethical because destroying and recreating what is given to us. Also it is harmful to us and everything else on the earth.

In article one, it talks about the genetically modified eggplants. this is done because the catapillar keeps on eating the plant and many famers cannot afford medicine to treat the plants. apprently this is safe but some tests show that they are not.
in artical two, china has altered their rice and it is not safe for the people and the environment. tests done on mice has shown that it harms the immune system and it is not safe. people are not satisified with the fact that it is going to give them health problems.

i dont like the idea of genitic engineering because if mother earth created the things this way it should be kept this way. it is also not 100% safe to the people eating and the environment. killing insects to make more money does not sound moral to me. but from a farmer's view, genetic engineering may be needed to support their faminly so this issue can be a big contreversy.

Okey doke, so article one says that genetically modified is okay and that all food should be modified. It kills pests and it does not harm anyone. It also means less money to spend on pesticides and the public are okay with it. Article two is NOT okay with this what so ever. They think that genetically modified rice may cause serious public health and environmental problems. The public thinks it is unnatural because your forcing something to happen that does not happen naturally. Two major issues about GM rice are their tendencies to provoke allergic reactions and the uncertainty of gene transfers. Seriously I do not really care about the matter....as long as my health is not at risk. I also love food and I do not like little bugs in my food (GROOOOOOOSSSSSS!) So I'm kind torn between the issue. If they can find a way to keep the plants healthy and not at risk of pests then I would be willing to buy it. The modified eggplant can help and hurt the environment and people. It will reduce the amount of pesticides on plants and the amount of ruined vegetables.
People say that it might be harmful. What if you're allergic? The GM rice can be very dangerous to people. It could impact the environment in some weird way and then we'll be in trouble. I think that some genetically modified food is okay. Too much might become a problem though. It could turn into an invasive species. I don't think it is ethical, especially if it just helps save the product from annoying pests. Natural is the better way to go, you actually know what it is and it didn't have something freaky done to it.

Even if the genetically modified plants can reduce the number of pesticides, it is killing the organism that is giving the plant the pesticide. I feel that we should not be completely depending on these modified plants for it is not an ethical thing to do. Eating genetic modified foods can be harmful to our bodies after so many times we have ingested the product. I feel that we should let things of nature be how it is supposed to, without the modifications of scientists. People who are changing to organic foods should be aware that some plant foods are being genetically modified, meaning that they are not naturally grown. When it comes to drawing the line, it should have been drawn before the reseach even began. If the food industry is still developing genetically modified plants, there needs to be a way to let the people known what is happening to their vegetables and other plants.

Arcticle#1 A certain species of caterpillar is eating through the the indian eggplant crops. This is reducing the yield so ther farmers are using incectides to kill them. They are able to genetical modify the eggplant ot kill the caterpillar which i think is amazing. It however i raising a lot of controversy over ethic of the the practice.

Article #2 The practice of geneticlay engineering rice is raising controvercy in china. It is been linked to long term health issues. Tests have showed it alters the imuune system of mice which makes people question how save it is. It also raises an issue with biodiversity.

I have a bit of a problem with geneticly engineering foods. I do however feel that if it is harming the enviroment than it should be stopped growing crops the old fashioned way supported people for over a milenium so whats the problem with it now. I could understand in countries that have problems with growing food or are facing total starvation using it, but people who just want to grow more and sell more i dont feel are ethical. I personaly don't think that it should be used on humans or animals because thats in my opinion creepy. I think the problems with the process should be resolved before i will think its ethical.

Genetically engineered rice could possibly cause extremely harmful effects on people’s health and the environment. Genetic engineering has been known to have long term effects and problems. The GM plants are modifying rice plants and mice that have been tested to see the effects of the modifying have had abnormalities in their immune systems. The GM rice has tendencies to provoke allergic reactions and the uncertainty of gene transfers. Biodiversity comes into this as well. Planting these crops will bring out one specific chemical from the soil.

I think it depends on why the scientists are genetically altering food. Some foods we eat everyday are genetically altered but we don’t even realize it. I think it is okay to alter food if it is for a genuinely good reason, like making food that can grow in poor soil areas with a lot of starving people or to make it more eco-friendly or healthy. Genetic engineering should not be used to make companies richer but to better the world and environment. I also believe there should be rules and laws on certain tests the food should undergo before being let out to the public, including checking long term effects. I do think it is ethical to a point. The new food should not be out of this world for dirty rotten schemes or something like that but reasonable and with a purpose.

In India, genetic modification has stirred up a bit of controversy. insects are eating up the eggplants causing farmers to use lots of harmful pesticides. gene splicing created a type of eggplant with a "built-in" organic pesticide allowing Indian farmers to grow eggplant without using pesticides. Moral of the story: its cheaper and more efficient.

In china, the creation of genetically modified rice has caused farmers to grow this instead of normal rice. there are health concerns, through, that the pest-resistant rice may be dangerous to humans, too. this is based of off strange reactions in mice, to GM food, observed by scientists.

MY stand:
Genetic modification is awesome. of course scientists should be doing this. you can make foods that grow in higher quantities and sell them for less so people who cant normally afford food can afford it. You can do other stuff too. Genetic modification is the future . there may be some unwanted side effects, but we'll work those out eventually.this is probably one of the greatest scientific discoveries ever. it is the future! it is very ethical. in fact saying it is unethical is unethical. of course there is a limit genetic modification on humans could get out of control(*cough cough* bioshock *cough cough). see you next week folks.=)

Some other worries are the stability of the gene, and the reduction in the spectrum of other plants.
I personally don't think that we should be doing this to our food. We may however need it some day but not now. There have been many controversies about this. I personaly don't think that we should be doing this. We shold be careful with what we eat. If we mess up now we'll be facing major conseqences in the future. Scientists should do way more research and perform more tests.This isn't ethical at all because it is harming people and the environment. I think it is enough unless they want people and the environment to be in danger and in harm. They should really think about researching and testing it out though.

The first article was about research done in India for the eggplant. The eggplant is an important vegetable in Indian foods. But these vegetables are hard to grow, because of hungry caterpillars munching on them. Because of these caterpillars, farmers lose profits, which has led to the invention of genetically modifying the eggplant itself, instead of spraying it with harmful pesticides. One bite of these new eggplants, and its bye-bye to the caterpillars.

The second article was about genetically modified rice. Apparently, there is a lot of controversy over this one.Two major issues about GM rice are their tendencies to provoke allergic reactions and the uncertainty of gene transfers.Fang Lifeng, Greenpeace's food and agriculture campaigner, told China Daily that the long-term risk of genetically modified rice should be taken into consideration, also mentioning the harmful effects genetically mofified corn had on lab mice.

My take on this whole debate is mixed. On one hand, genetically modifiying foods sounds, well, really cool. I understand that taking these chances with altering nature is very unstable- I mean, look at what happened with those lab mice! But I also believe that this is a technological innovation that is ingenius. But then again, the practice of genetically altering foods shouldn't be treated lightly. This process would be good for places that can't grow a lot of plants due to certain environmental issues and can therefore be helpful for solving world hunger. But serious testing should be done before I would eat any of those foods. I belive that there could very likely be side-effects from eating a lot of genetically altered foods, maybe not immediatly, but quite possibly down the road. And I don't know about you, but going from genetically altered plant to genetically altered human is quite a large leap- one I am not sure I'd be able to take.

I think it is not really ethical of what these scientists are doing kind of. I mean why mess with these foods when they're already perfectly fine. Who cares if they're catepillars or other pests eating them, they're just finding a way to surivive too. What the scientists are doing to the foods might be making them even worse then they already are. So i think we should just leave them the way they are. I think the limit of doing this is to never try it at all and just leave the foods the way they are. Just leaving things the way they were is just fine
 
I think that the modified egg plant is the right step in the correct dirrection. However the fact that we are changing the plant has upset some people. Those people think that the food isn't ethical like it was not from nature and the safteyness aspect of it. Since the thing that they are putting into the plant has been around for a really long time and people are now only just getting uspet at its use. The eggplant will significantly reduce the amount of pesticides, and should be less expensive to manufacture. And it is supposed to be safe. The GM rice however is on the other side of the spectrum. The GM rice has many serious and potentially harmful affects on people who consume it. Tests on mice showed that their immune systems were altered after eating the food. The rice will potentially affect the enviroment that it planted in and might even disrupt the ecosystems. I feel that genetically modifing the food is the right way to go. There is so many people to have to grow for on so little space. If nothing is done there will eventually be a world wide shorage of food. But there should be limits to the amounts alterations that you could do one plant. The scientists should fix all of the problems that they have with the food. I feel that it is ethical if producing enough food for everone isn't a problem. I think that there is a limit to genetically modifying plants. In India, there is a problem with catipillars who feast on eggplant. These catipillars leave the plant weak and unable to produce. So, a new protein BT was genetically added to eggplant, which is said to kill the catipillars, and this raised much debate as to wether this new eggplant is safe to consume. GM rice is said to be unhealthy and can cause many negative long term effects on your health. A major issue regarding GM rice is its tendency to provoke allergic reactions. It was even found that the immune systems of nice who consumed GK rice were abnormal . I feel that GM foods can possibly have negative effects on health. I dont believe in the use of pesticides either. I feel that food is food and its natural genetic makeup should not be messd with. As a consumer i want to be able to know what im eating and how and if that food was treated. I want to know what kind of toxins are going into my body as a result of me ingesting it. I also want to be able to know the negative effects of these chemicals and be able to determine wether they aresafe or not. Scientists can continue doing this research, but i wont ever but products that have been treated. I dont think its ethical bexuase consumers deserve to be protected and deserve to know what they are eating and whats being put into their foods. I feel that its okay as long as companies are attempting to create a healthier product, not something that looks prettier. In the food industry the genetically modified egg plant is a great achievement. However it did cause some debate on how safe it really is. For example, the GM rice company has many serious and harmful affects on people as it could cause allergic reactions and it is said to be hazardous. It also brings up questioning of it affect on the food chain and life on earth. The Eggplant , unlike the rice could have a significant impact on the reduction of pesticides and should be less expensive to manufacture showing the good in genetically modified foods. I think that modified foods could be helpful to society in the near future but we should be cautious until further tests are done proving its safety. I don't think that this practice is very ethical because of the slight chance of harming or killing people. Until further testing is done i don't think that this food should be let out to the public.

I don't think that the genetic modifications of certain foods is ethical at all. First off, it could be extremely hazardous to to people who are very alergic to certain foods. Another reason is that uncertain gene transfer is possible ad could ultimately change the nutritional properties of a certain food. Sure, the people in India created an eggplant that kills off caterpillars, but if veggies like that were to get on the market, it could harm or even kill many healthy people.

I think that the built in pesticide in the eggplant is a good idea compared to spraying our food with extremely harmful chemicals. This could really help lower the amount of money problems in the food industry. It costs a lot of money to spray huge fields of food with pesticides, which is mostly done many times in a growing season. It would also help because it is not harmful to humans, but it keeps pests away. However, the GM rice sounds like a bad idea. The article was all about the negative affects of GM rice, and based on it, there's probably not any good ones. No one wants to eat food that could give them an allergic reaction, harm them, or even kill them. I think that its great that people are trying to come up with good ideas to keep pests away from their food, but there has to be a stopping point. People are changing the natural world into something that it isn't supposed to be. It has been shown many times that GM food can do a lot more harm than good, that should be a wake-up call for scientists that they need to stop. I don't think GM food is ethical because it has the potential to kill people and do a lot of damage to the earth and its life. Sure it could lower costs, but is money so important that you have to kill millions of people for it? GM food would be okay if it didn't have a huge list of problems. If there's nothing wrong with it, who really cares? But people can die from eating GM food, get allergic reactions, they can do a lot of damage to the earth. I really dont like the idea of scientists messing with the genes of the food I have to eat. People dont know what they're eating anymore, theres so many secrets about the things we put on our plate. Farming isn't supposed to be a science project, so why are people making it one?
