It is interesting that the brain is easily distracted when surprised. We could be surprise at any moment and that could cause damage. When people are surprised, they can be temporarily blinded the can cause damages. Also some people are more easily distracted that others. With this research, we can be closer to understanding the way our brain is working and what it is able to do. Even with this though we still do not know everything about the brain.

This is a very interesting story,I had no idea this was happening (probably cause I was temporarily blinded). It is also very interesting that everyone's brain is distracted by a slight surprise. So if you get surprised, you can be temporarily blind. This reaction happens in the interior frontal junction and causes us to not be able to multi-task. I find this to be a very interesting research topic.

I thought it was weird that they decided to use a fire alarm for an example. Aren't we taught to be aware of those? Besides that, I found the article to have focus on the negatives, I think that surprise is actually a good thing since that means we're functioning, right? I encourage these kinds of tests though, since they expand our vague knowledge of the human brain.

it makes sense that the brain can be easily distracted, it happens to people everyday. When we are surprised, all things prior to the surprised are lost until we are no longer surprised. I felt this was an interesting article to read, to realize how are brains are functioning and how we are learning more and more about the brain itself. Also, being distracted for a short time by a sudden surprise means that we are aware of our surrondings, and that our brains are in full function.

I find it very strange that being surprised can temporarily blind us. The brain is very complex. This goes to show how much we can learn from the brain. It is very interesting that something as simple as a surprise can temporarily blind us. It will make me think twice before I sneak up on someone.

I was not surprised because I get distracted easily (if you haven't noticed). I that that is why I am so stupid=] I get surprised so much that i get brain damage. Obviously certain people like me get distracted easier.With this research, we can be closer to understanding the way our brain is working and what it is able to do. But we still don't know everything about the brain. It is just to complicated.

I think that it's interesting that humans can distracted easily. I expected people with certain conditions, like ADHD, and even some perfectly fine people to be distracted, but I wouldn't predict that anyone would ever be temporarily blinded. Vanderbilt University's tests, trying to find an "x" in a series of letters while a face occasionally came up, are interesting and they prove a point. People can be easily distracted when trying to focus deeply in an activity. Also, besides losing your concentration, your heart rate increases, so an intense amount of surprise to a person with an unstable heart could be very dangerous. Some people become temporarily blinded due to the excess use of our nervous system and we lose our sense of sight. Vanderbilt University's tests also proved that multitasking can be limited due to the bottleneck of the interior frontal junction, which intentionally blocks you from doing too many activities at once.
It has also been prove that a surprise can effect your ability to remember. Researchers have discovered that unexpected stimuli enhanced an earlier and later electrical potential in a certain section of the brain, the hippocampus, and later signal was involved with the memory of the unexpected picture.

I was thinking that maybe its not really temporary blindness that was the result of the experiment presented in the article- the experiment with the "X"? The people in the experiment were focusingon finding the X, and only the X. They knew that there was going to be a stream of letters. What was unexpected was the random face that popped up in the stream of letters. The apperance of the face caused the subjets to miss the X a couple of times.I feel as though this isn't temporary blindness so much as it's loss of concentration. When people lose their focus due to a surprise, it's is hard to regain focus again.

I wasnt surprised by this at all. When I get distracted I usually just totally forget what I was doing. Sometimes I remember, other times it takes me some time. Sometimes I just completely forget, and its kind of annoying. Basically you are blind because its like whatever you were doing never even happened.

This was a study done at Emory University and Baylor College of Medicine. It shows that when the brain is surprised with a rewarding stimulus/stimuli, its pleasure sensors are more active. For example, if someone is getting money, that area of the brain (called the nucleus accumbens) will be more active than if the person was losing money.

I find it very fascinating that the brain is easily distracted when it's surprised. There were many researches taken t explain why our brain is easily distracted according to this article.There is a surprise stimuli trigger what is known as the orienting response in which the heart rate increases, the nervous system is more aroused and we pay intense attention to a new item in our environment.

This study is very fascinating in the respect that some surprises or distractions could actually cause so many stimuli and instant responses in a person's sympathetic nervous system that it causes a jam in your brain and you temporarily lose your sight. I think this response is both good and bad. Good in the respect that one less thing going on, your sight, may help your body prepare for the emergency more quickly and effectively. While the loss of sight could give you a disadvantage in an emergency and cause some disorientation after regaining sight which diminishes the allotted time for a response. Also, this study poses more questions, for example how much of a surprise actually is needed to cause a response like this? I think these studies are very worth while in understanding how our brain works and in preparing us for our bodies' natural response in emergency situations because I don't think we need anymore surprises in a real emergency.

I find it somewhat peculier that people are more eaily distracted when they are trying to focus. It somewhat scares me though knowing that i probably at some point was temporarily blinded. I also feel that some people however get distraced eisier than others. for instance people with Atention Deficit disorder.

I find this article very interesting and surprising. Its obvious that the brain is easily distracted and at any time and can be damaged. I liked this article. Although I did find it a bit awkward that we can be temporarily blinded if we got surprised. Its a good thing that we humans are finally starting to understand ourselves even more and learn more about ourselves.

I think this study is very interesting. I can see how being surprised can easily break your attention. I don't think you are actually blinded, I think that you just become temporarily oblivious to what is happening. I also think that the length of distraction would vary from person to person. Being surprised definitely affects your ability to concentrate.

The article was really interesting. It can easily be understood how the brain can be distracted fast. When we concentrate on something for a long time,we are more prone to be distracted easily. This research might be a real opening to understanding the functioning of our brain more. It might all be totally true, but I dont know how much credible it is counting a person missing to count some of the x's when a face was also appearing-- as result of temporary blindness. I think it might more or less be due to loss of concentration than that of blindness. However, there should definitely e more study put into this field.

OK, ten years ago we would not hear this. I thought that there was one type of attention the brain could do and then it has to move on. But now that i think about it, when the fire alarm goes off in the school everyone seems to be startled at first and then it is a hang-out time for them. I don't agree with that. I also think that in ten more years we as a whole will find out more about the human brain.

I was surprised how the brain is so easily blown off course when you're surprised. I never would even have thought I lost my eye sight for just a second when surprised. I think losing your sight just for a little bit could be a bad thing. Being blind for a little bit puts you at a big disadvantage. Your reaction time to a certain event could be delayed or not happen at all.

I didn't know that we can be blinded from being surprised. This could be something to watch out for though. Say you are driving and a deer runs into the road. I guess there are still many things that we don't know about our own brains! But this research should help better advance just exactly how our brains react to stimuli.

it was very interesting see little we can actually multitask. i'm easily suprised and easily distracted so i suppose ican to relate to this. u feel it is important to know this because we can use this info to research and know about the brain more. these tests are good because they show we have a pulse and can react accordingly. a website that talks about the brain and its tasks was about multitasking

I think that it's interesting how the brain can temporarily blind you if you are surprised. Actually i related to this article a lot because whenever I get surprised and I am holding an object which requires my attention, it always seems as if my vision goes black for a second or two! I think this is a great step in learning more about how our bodies work, especially our brain.

I think this article was very interesting. I had no idea that when surprised you are temporarily blinded. I also find it interesting that everyones brain reacts differently to different things that could surprise us. It also makes a lot of sense that the brain is easily distracted as it does so many jobs. I do think that surprise is a good thing though cause its that sort of thing that shows are body is functioning correctly and is prepared for things out of the norm of our daily life.

It is very easy for the brain to get distracted (especially if you are me). Unfortunately, these distractions can do some damage. When someone gets surprised, they can be temporarily blinded. But if you are distracted, it is easier to be surprised. So if you get distracted easier, it could be a problem.

It's really surprising that any body can get distracted. I get really distracted easily so it's kinda comforting knowing that even the most attentive can get distracted. When we are surprised our heart rate increases and the nervous system is aroused. This could be good or bad.

I think it is fascinating how the brain tends to focus on one thing at a time, which ever subject dominates another one. We get surprised many times a day, and it is just stimuli that gets our attention. It is also interesting how being surprised can be positive and negative. When your attention suddenly shifts, that can cause slight brain damage. But if something important happens like the "fire alarm" or potential danger, it is good to be alert. This study is also interesting because it makes you think about people with A.D.D. or A.D.H.D. I wonder if less of a stimuli is needed to catch their attention, ass opposed to someone without ADHD it may take a very loud interruption to become surprised.
